Hi all!
Well, it's been an interesting week! First we were moving to Kansas and now it's Houston!
We live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex now and know very little about Houston. My husband will be working close to 610 & 45 Northwest side. We have very little time to look for a house so I'll need to narrow down the areas before I get down there.

1. What's the best areas to look at? We need excellent schools, safe neighborhood and good shopping ;)! We're looking at 200-250k for a house, if that helps.

2. what areas should we avoid for either safety factors or traffic factors?

3. I will be needing a really great ped. and speech therapist. My daughter has a speech delay so we need to still work on that.

4. I'll also be needing a great preschool for her. One with very patient teachers because of the speech delay. She's very smart but a little hard to understand still.

Thanks in advance for all help! I'm very excited and scared as we'll be leaving all of our family here. Thanks again!

What can I do next?

I have lived in Houston all my life and also have a job that has taken me to all areas of Houston and the schools so I have a pretty good idea of the areas. If your husband will be working 610 and 45, I would recommend The Woodlands. That area is almost a whole city in itself, and there are many very good doctors, daycares, and churches to choose from. Yes, there is traffic to go through on 45, but unless you choose to live inside the loop, 45 is much better commute than 290 or 59 South (which you would have to take to get to copperfield and sugarland areas). If you want a short commute, you can look inside the loop 610, but you will have the public schools of HISD, which are not all the best, however you may want to ask someone who lives there as I have not. There are some nice areas inside the loop, but the homes are much more expensive and you will get a lot less for your 200-250 thousand - inside the loop you will get an older house needing updating, whereas in The Woodlands you can get a brand new house. It really depends on your priorities. Tomball is nice as well, and the commute would not be too bad either (45 minutes probably to an hour depending on what time he leaves). My parting advice to you - I live in Cypress which is Northwest Harris county - AVOID the Highway 290 commute as if your life depends on it!!!!!!!!!!! Traffic our way is already bad and will only get worse, the freeway will go under construction in 2011 and will remain under construction for years and years.

Welcome to HOUSTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck with moving, it can be an emotional rollercoaster! You just have to take 1 day at a time. You are making the right start, by asking questions. A few years ago we lived in Copperfield area (Hwy 6 & 290) and loved it. Not sure how far your hubby wants to commute, but Tomball is a nice area. There are so many new subdivisions with lots to offer. The pediatrician that we use is Dr. Michael Knapick in the 1960 Pediatrics office which has relocated to 290W. Hope this helps at least a little.

Hi! Good luck with your move. I moved here from Dallas about 4 years ago and felt overwhelmed with the choices of where to live. I live in Humble (in Fall Creek), which would be reasonably close. My sister lives in the Klein school district, which is more the NW Houston area. I think she is a little happier with the public schools than I am. I also think the shopping over there is better. I usually go to the Woodlands or in town to shop. A new elementary school just opened in my neighborhood, so I am interested to see how it fares. We both attend Northwoods Presbyterian Church, and they have a very loving preschool there. The small size may be a help with the speech delay.

As far as crime, the crime in my neighborhood seems to have escalated recently. My sister's neighborhood does not seem as bad. She basically lives in Champions Forest. As far as traffic, I think 45 is a nightmare and try to avoid it whenever possible. The Hardy Toll Road usually is good.

My pediatrician is in Kingwood. She is great, but you probably would not want to use her unless you live in Kingwood. Good luck!

My sister is a Realtor in the area you are moving to. Her name is Barbara Simpkins and she works for Keller Williams Realtor. Her ####-###-####. She would be able to answer any questions or concerns you may have about the area, such as schools, daycare, etc.... Good luck with your move and I hope this info helps you!

Hi,
I don't know much about the Houston area. I came from Calif over a year ago from living there my whole life and we came to Kingwood. My husband works about 40 mins away from here in Houston. We love it here. But when i just asked my husband where he would want to live when i told him where abouts your husband was working, he said Katy or Sugarland.
I've heard both are super nice. My son has special needs that started as a speech delay and i'm glad to be in the Kingwood school district which is the Humble School district and i'm sure both of those towns (although i don't actually know!) have nice schools also. I hope you find an awesome home and area for your family.
God Bless~
I.

I would suggest that you look in the West University area or The Woodlands. Very nice areas and an easy commute to his job. Also, in regards to childcare, may I suggest checking out Cultural Care Au Pair. I am a Local Childcare Coordinator for the and I would be the coordinator for your area, unless you chose the Woodlands. We have a vast array of Au Pairs who are available to provide special care for your little ones. www.culturalcare.com. If you would like to you can e-mail me for more information. ____@____.com
