Hi,
We're moving to MA in January, office will be located in Marlborough. Can anyone recommend some family friendly neighborhoods in the metro west area? Or areas to avoid? Willing to commute 30 min or so. Never been to MA so we're completely unfamiliar with the area! Two kids ages 4 & 8, $500K price range home.
Thanks so much for any suggestions!
A.

We've been in Ashland for 14 years and love it; it meets your commute and price range requirements. We're a very grass roots community, lots of great people who really care about our town. It's easy to get involved and plugged in, especially if you have children in the schools. We have very dedicated educators, even in this economic climate of tight budgets. I loved bringing our girls to the Ashland Public Library too each week. Their programs and children's library were a staple in my kids upbringing and they are both avid readers today. We have Stone Park and school playgrounds for burning off extra energy, as well as the Ashland State Park for hikes and swimming. There are lots of opportunities for kids sports too.

Enjoy lunch at Sunnyside Cafe by the library, or go across the street to John Stone's pub -- it used to be part of the underground railway, and is believed to be haunted! We also have a wonderful, dedicated police chief in Scott Rohmer who, along with our fire chief, does a great job with public safety.

Take a look, you may find your new home in Ashland! Good luck, and feel free to contact me if you'd like.

My husband and I moved to this part of the state a little over two years ago. From my experience, thus far, Westborough has been great. I've heard that it has a great school system. (I have 2 year old twins so I don't have personal experience with the school system just yet!) Shrewsbury is known to have an excellent school system as well. My husband grew up in Southborough which is another very nice town. I think the town that I've been most impressed with is Northborough. Overall it seems like a great town/community. I would definitly recommend you look into Northborough. Best wishes!

Hi Aimee,

We were living in Framingham, MA- which is very close to Marlborough- until about 7 months ago. We were there for 5 years and loved it...we have 2 young boys (3.5 & 6) and there was lots and lots for them to get involved with. Also, you are super close to the Natick Mall and Route 9, which has full of shops, restaurants, etc.
If you have trouble finding a house by the time you move, our house in Framingham is on the market. We are also willing to rent it short term while it is on the market so this might be beneficial for you as you are looking for a permanent home. It's a 3 bedroom ranch so you'd be comfortable while looking for a house to buy. If you want more info you can e-mail me at ____@____.com you'd like more info on the area in general I can help with that too.

My husband also works in Marlborough. We have lived in Littleon for seven years and love it. I feel like it has the right mix of rural pictoresqueness and access to conveniences. The schools are good, the location is great -- near lots of fun kid stuff such as the Little Gym, Discovery Museums, good libraries both in our town and neighboring ones in the system, Drumlin Farm (working farm kids can visit), and lots more. We have several choices for grocery shopping, and there is a nice parents' network in town so you can get to know other families. The train comes through town, and it's fun to take the kids into Boston sometimes. It's also only 30 min from NH and tax-free shopping in Nashua! Plus, my mother-in-law lives in NH, but of course you don't care about that :). Acton and Westford are nice too, but farther from Marlborough (my husband's commute is 20 min). We live right off 495 (which goes to Marlborough), but you can't see the highway and don't realize it's there! We live in a great kid-packed neighborhood right near the high school (New Estate Rd), and there are several other nice neighborhoods (Spartan Arrow, for instance) in town. There are lots of houses for sale on my street (including mine -- we love Littleton but need an in-law apartment; however, we'll definitely be staying in town). I believe there is at least one for sale on Spartan Arrow. And a friend of mine has a nice house for sale right in your price range. It's not in a neighborhood, which is partly why she's moving, but the house itself and the big back yard are very nice. It's on Hartwell Ave. Feel free to send me a private message if you have more questions.

I'd also reccommend my real-estate broker (Beaver Brook Associates). We used her when we moved here seven years ago and liked her so much we're using her again now.

Good luck with the move!

you can also look at Clinton, Berlin, Sterling & Leominster - all within 30 minutes to Marlboro & very nice communities. I myself have lived in Leominster all my life & have been very happy with the teachers that my 7 year old has had the last few years in school.

Hi there,
I live in Marlborough and it is actually a nice place to live. There are certainly nicer neighborhoods than others. The school system is a good one as well. You could also consider Sudbury, Wayland, Framingham and Natick. All of those are within a 30 minute ride. If you will be in need of a pediatrician I can also suggest Framingham Pediatrics. We take both our children there and have always been very pleased with the care they receive. Good luck with your move and house hunting!!

I work in Hudson, MA which is one town over. If I were to pick something close I would look in Sudbury, Stow, Bolton or Westford. All of which are nice bedroom communities and good for kids.
