We will be moving to Minneapolis in a month or so... as soon as I can make it all happen anyway. My husband is currently flying back and forth for work and we are eager to join him. We lived there for a few month when we were first married... 14 years ago. I have no idea what areas to start looking at for a house. We have a 10yr. old and a 4yr old so of course schools and activities are foremost in our minds. But, my husbands office is right downtown and we want to make sure his commute isn't too long. Eagan is a great place to live - fantastic schools and lots of parks, etc. Just voted 12 best city to live in, in the USA! B..
My husband, daughter, and I live in the Lake Nokomis area of Minneapolis--we love it. Our daughter is only 2, but our neighbors have had wonderful things to say about the schools that their kids attend (Dowling Elem). That said, I teach in district 196 (Eagan, Apple Valley, Rosemount) and our school district is fantastic. I grew up in district 270 which is Hopkins and they are excellent as well. Wayzata also has an impressive school district with a very supportive school board.

I suggest the Shoreview area, White Bear Lake, Maplewood, Cirle Pines....They are very good neighborhoods.. But a little further from the downtown area...
One option might be to look into homes near the Hiawatha Light Rail line. It is a short drive downtown from many neighborhoods in this area, or better yet, a short train ride. There can be quite a wide range of income levels depending on which specific neighborhood you are looking at. My daughter is still several years away from attending school, so I do not have any first-hand experience with the Minneapolis school system. As for activities, if you like spending time outdoors, the Minneapolis park system is terrific. There are tons of parks (big and small) all over the city. Lake Nokomis and Minnehaha Creek are also in South Minneapolis. Not sure if that helps at all, but good luck with your move!
I guess it depends on how much you can afford and exactly what you are looking for...Edina is known for their schools. Bloomington, Mendota Heights and St. Anthony are also suppose to have good schools. All three of these suburbs are close to downtown. Let me know if I can offer any other advice.
Well, I live in St. Paul so I can't help you with Minneapolis neighborhoods, but this website is really great for information on schools.
I would try looking in the Minnetonka,Wayzata,St.Louis Park, Hopkins area. I use to live out that way and really really liked everything about the area. I felt safe, secure, happy and had everything I needed close to home. School's are great.

St. Louis Park is a great area, very close to Minneapolis and good schools. If you are looking specifically in Minneapolis, look for addresses with South or South West in them, avoid North Minneapolis. In St. Paul Merriam Park, Highland, West St. Paul all very good areas, avoid East Side of St. Paul (Dayton's Bluff)I currently live here and the area is very iffy. As far as school districts go, I believe Hopkins (basically Hopkins and Minnetonka), Edina and Wayzata (Plymouth) schools are great on the Western side of town. I am not as familiar with the other areas. Certain neighborhoods in all these districts are close to downtown Mpls, but can have a premium price as a result. Welcome back!
