My husband just accepted a job in Orange County,NY and we will be moving in the next few months. I was wondering if anyone new the area, how the schools are, what type of things there are for kids (I have 3 year old twins) and if there are any moms groups around. While my husband has family in NY, I am from Los Angeles and will have no one out there.

I am worried about moving to a new area with no friends. How have any of you done it? Any advice is appreciated.

We are moving to the Goshen area

What can I do next?

I moved to San Francisco with three kids age 1, 2, and 4. I found a babysitting co-op and then a cooperative pre-school. If there is either of those in Goshen and they are acceptable in their philosophy, I would urge you to join. You get to know and work with a lot of parents with children your kids age and you might make some lasting friendships.

I remember visiting Goshen when I was a kid (I lived in Rockland). It was very small town suburbia with lots of victorian and old homes. Incredibly adorable but very different from LA andTempe in weather, people, shopping, architecture, lifestyle. People spend a lot more time indoors in the fall and winter but beautiful changes in season. Schools used to be excellent. My parents met other parents through school, church, sports. I'm sure you'll be able to find a local mom's group in the local paper or internet search. Enjoy the opportunity to live in a completely different environment and experience something different. Good luck :)

I changed country because of my (now ex) husband, and after I made friends and settle in the new place where I moved, I had to change State and start over again (with a 10 months old son). I assure you can make it in Orange County!!! Find a job and get involved with local communities, talk to people, when you are there, from the grocery lady to the hairdresser, to the school principal etc...start making those little connections that will make the place familiar to you. You'll be fine.

Orange county is pretty big and the town you'll be living in will impact the answer a great deal. While I haven't relocated I have lived in the area my entire life.
