Hi - we are moving from San Antonio to Salt Lake City in a few months and was wondering if anyone can recommend a certain part of town to look for rental homes, or even to buy. We are looking for an area where the schools are best, and there is a hospital near by. Anyone has any ideas....?? I appreciate any help!

I've been looking at Daybreak, is that a nice area? What do you think?
We live in Sugar House and love it. The houses are smaller, but the area is walkable and we are close to 2 hospitals. I also find that there are a lot of transplants in this area.
Murray!! We are a smaller, incorporated city, sandwiched in the middle of the valley. There is the new Intermountain Medical Center on 5300 S and just west of State Street. The schools are AMAZING (my kids go to Horizon Elementary and it is by far the best we have been in!). I don't know a lot about rental homes, and I know that house prizes are a bit more pricey here than some other areas of the valley, but the neighborhood is very nice and the houses are good sized for the price. We rent an apartment in Hunters' Woods (which has good and bad like anywhere).
We also are located right near a park-and-ride for both Trax (the in-valley commuter light rail) and it will soon be a park-and-ride for Front Runner, too (commuter rail to Ogden, and soon to Provo which is when we will get a stop).
My suggestion would be to live in Davis county, more house for the money and close enough to Down Town. Plus taxes are low. I can tell you right now that Schools will not even come close to schools in San Antonio, but there are always Charter Schools we love ours... Good luck
S., you will like Utah. It is a change from texas, but we like it! Even though if the right job came up DH would move in a heartbeat back to texas. Anyway, what are you looking for in terms of size and price? Do you mind a commute to downtown? Davis and Tooele county are a good bet if you are looking for more for the money without being too far out of "Town". Otherwise, I loved west valley city/magna area too. The previous poster was correct in that the school systems seem to leave me wanting more, but the charter schools are top notch! I really like Utah County schools the best, my son has excelled there. Saratoga Springs is in northern Utah County and you can find a good deal there too and it is the same distance from downtown as davis or tooele counties.

We live in Davis county too, and love it! Bountiful, actually. We are close to downtown, but we have a great community without the super busy-ness. Close to stores and hospitals. We have a small place we are selling... don't know what you are looking for. We have to move and are sad. Our 2 bedroom condo is up for sale. Good luck in your move and in your search! Davis county does have great prices. That's why we first moved here.
Murray is a good location. Easy access to freeways, shopping. Major hospital in the middle of town.
I live in Magna ut which is just west of SLC. It has LOTS of very cheap housing and rentals. At first I didn't like the look of magna because it's an older area- kinda rural in some parts but there are wonderful people here. You'd be part of Granite school district- which has the highest amount of state dollars at work so you get some nice amenities. My kids are too young to be in school so I don't have any other knowledge about the schools other than other people telling me they've got great teachers. Hope that helps :) Let me know if you'd like more info. We're about 8700 west and 3100 south. It's only about a 10 min drive to down town because it's all highway/freeway driving.
Sandy area is nice. 9400 S and 1300 E is a hospital, Alta Hosptial
Cottonwood is nice and close to the Mountains.
Murray is nice.
Draper is nice, too

In my opinion, the houses are beautiful in Daybreak but it is too far from the city and so many things to do. We are in the Murray/Cottonwood Heights/S. area and love it. There is a variety of housing and prices available, and a lot of transplants. We are within 15 minutes of 4 hospitals.
we live in the avenues in salt lake. There is fair rental prices, but i will say buying is probably higher in that area, sugarhouse is probably high for purchasing as well... but living IN the city is FANTASTIC, lots of hospitals close by!
