Help please - I want to get an MP3 player for my son for his birthday next Friday. He is turning 14 !! I don't want to spend over $60 dollars. I looked at the Ipod Shuffle but it really does not do much. His friends all have pretty spiffy players so I want to find one that have the bells and whistles but doesn't cost as much as the Ipods. I also want one that will not break in a week. Friends have suggested a Zune or a Creative Zen I looked at Amazon and found other brands, but when the product notes include how to change the language from Chinese to English I worry about compatibility. The Creatives had some really negative comments on their site. Does anyone have any suggestions on brands and where to purchase?

Hi birthday is next week so I don't have much time. Yikes!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your help. I wound up at Best Buy and bought a 4gb Scandisc player that does has FM radio and a video display. Yep, I sent $70.00. The chip from his phone will fit into it so he can transer his photos from his camera. Plus, I have a friend loading it with music from their son's file.

Thanks again!!

Have you checked Craigslist? You can find great stuff, even new, for cheap.

We compared different brands and styles, read reviews and talked to other parents. I didn't want to spend a lot of money either, but when it came down to it, we did. I asked my daughter what she wanted in an MP3 player, not which one she wanted. I took the list of things she "needed" in a player and then searched for one that best fit and that I was willing to pay for.

We ended up getting her the Ipod Nano. Yes, it cost more than I wanted to pay, but I knew if we bought something that wouldn't suit her "needs" that it would be a waste of money because she wouldn't use it for very long.

This one is a perfect fit. It has plenty of room for her songs, videos and you can also download tv shows and movies and podcasts. This is a player that will suit her needs for years to come.

You can search Craigs List and Ebay to find new and used ones for cheaper. We got hers for Christmas, so we were able to wait for a sale. Find the one that you are willing to buy and then price shop.

Just remember, you don't want to invest in one that your son will use for a month or two and then "out grow" it.

I love my ipod shuffle! It works for what I need it for-working out. We bought our son a basic mp3 player for his 9th bday last year. I am not sure what brand it was. I think it came from Target. It was around 50-60 bucks(last year). Personally I would go with the ipod shuffle,,,with a kid his age he probably wants what everybody else has and will enjoy it more if it is actually what he wants. I don't always give into having what my son's friend's have but, he hasn't used the mp3 player as much as we thought he would.( He doesn't have computer access at his mom's house and often forgets to bring it to our house to put music on it) Santa brought me my ipod! Good luck!

Hate to be a "Debbie Downer" but not sure you are going to find one with all the "bells and whistles" for $60? Although the Sony walkman everyone is talking about sounds like it might be worth a look...

All my kids have Zunes...but they are VERY expensive and very good...you won't be able to find one in your price range-although around Christmas time I saw a clearance Zune at Walmart for $119 so you should still try and look...does your son also want to download videos and such, if so then screen size should be factored in...I would be very weary of buying one on ebay and it sounds like you don't have that much time anyway.

I think you should just go down to Best Buy and Target and Walmart even and see what they got...good luck!

I know you don't want to spend over $60 , but in the long run you probably would be best off getting an ipod , it will last longer , it's what your son most likely really wants and you know you will have no issues with downloading to it , and resetting if they malfunction. Apple website has tips on what to do to correct any errors with them.
