My friend has a child that is autistic and she has him on a strict gluten free diet. She sent me tons of recipies that I was going to have my sister try for my ADHD nephew. Let me know if you would like me to forward the recipies to you.
My husband gets migraines from MSG. I try not to buy things with MSG in them. I just bought seasoned salt and the label said NO MSG. It is very strong smelling and its redish brown in color. He put just a smidgen on some mashed potatoes which I told him not to do and he ended up with a migraine the next day.
Does anyone know what some of the other MSG causing agents are?
I'm thinking the only way to have no MSG or MSG type things in food is to gluten free but I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on natural foods.

Hi- Lori is right on. Natural Flavors is another term used in ingredient lists for MSG. Everyone, not just people who have a sensitivity to it should be aware as it's just another a chemical added to many processed foods. Nearly all spices have it and I am amazed at where i see those "Natural Flavors" or "Yeast Extract" in many foods you may consider healthy. Nice to know the good old US government has our backs, LOL!
i don't know about the msg but i can tell you that the gluten free and all natural foods are very expensive. i know this because we have always eaten natural/ organic foods and my 2 year old is on a gluten free diet. it is very expensive. could it be other things than msg also? my husband is the expert on this he said gluten free stuff has nothing to do w msg and msg is a presertive. he said for example campbells soup puts it in all of their stuff and it will last forever.
I also get MSG headaches, and I have yet to find a Seasoned Salt that doesn't cause them. I've had to cut it out of my diet completely, which actually wasn't such a bad thing since it's so incredibly high in sodium and is not good for blood pressure. I use Paprika to add some spiciness, and the reduced sodium salt.
Would the seasoning have artificial coloring and food dye in it? Would that have contributed to the migraine?
My husband gets migraines too. Someone else may have given you this answer as well, but LOTS of things trigger migraines...red dye #5- found in many foods, asparatime (artificial sweetner), caffeine, chocolate, waiting too long to eat (That creates a drop in blood sugar, which leads to a migraine), etc. Try having him snack between meals or eat several small meals per day. Also, try all natural sea salt. If he's big on caffeine, cut back. Watch & read the labels on his food to see if red dye #5 or asparatime is in it. My husband loves the drink mix Crystal Light, particularly the fruit punch & raspberry ice flavors, but has had to cut down on it because of the red dye & asparatime. And as an FYI...once he already HAS a migraine, caffeine, ironically, can help it go away...it opens up the blood vessels. :) Good luck!
Go to www.msgmyth.com or org. According to government regulations if MSG is less than 99% pure it can be listed under a variety of different names.
Yeast Extract and almost ANYTHING that says autolyzed or hydrolyzed is probably and MSG. Also almost all commercial soups/stocks and most processed/packaged foods contain some sort of MSG.
This is what I do as a wellness educator, is to educate people on the chemicals in our food that is playing havoc with our health.
Good Luck and In good health,

The container may said NO MSG. But check the small print under the nutrition label. There are other word they us to high the MSG. Just like suar. They may say no sugar ( but it may have corn syrup, or any wird that ends with "ous.") check on your PC to see any other words that they our using in place of MSG or check with a nutriationist. Hope that my suggest will help.
If you do a little research online you'll quickly find that MSG is in literally tens of thousands of the foods at the supermarket. All processed foods and sauces are fair game and companies do NOT have to mark it on the label or in the ingredients list (it can fall under 'natural flavors' as an example). You basically have to contact each company and ask specifically and even then you probably won't get a straight answer. The best you can do is not buy processed foods - stick with meats, fish, fresh fruits/veggies and make your own bread... it's about the only way to be 100% sure.
You may want to do a serch on the internet for migraine diets. I work at a doctors office and we have a migraine diet with agents that can trigger migraines. I see you have found out that MSG triggers migraines for him but there may be something else in the salt that triggered a migraine for him other than the MSG. You may have to do multiple searches to find what you are looking for. I know if you are looking at foods that have MSG in them you can use the USDA.Gov website which is good for calorie counting and other food related things. Good luck to you and I hope you are able to figure out that is causing them other then the MSG
Preservatives can cause migraines, I don't know what was in your salt but we've found a lot of foods my daughter can eat if they are fresh or organic and she get's migraines if it is highly processes. My daughter gets migraines from soft serve icecream (DQ, Wendy's and McDonalds milkshakes etc.) which I've been told can be common. I forget the name of the chemical in soft serve but lots of people have a sensitivity to it.
You don't have to spend a lot of money but you'll spend a lot of time to get preservative free foods. Good luck.
