I need responses ASAP!!! We're leaving for vacation in a few days and my 21 month old is showing his first signs of a cold this morning. I want to go buy him a multi-vitamin today. Any suggestions for a good multi vitamin??? I heard there are a lot out there that don't contain the best things (from an Oprah show) but of course I don't rememer what or which... Please help! ;)

What can I do next?

Hi-
I don't know about the different vitamins. (I think you have to be really careful about iron.) Just make sure you flush his nostrils a couple of times a day with an over the counter saline mist. This will help clear the nasal passages for easier breathing and flush the gunkies (as we say at our house) out! Enjoy your trip!

Not sure if it made a difference or not but I have been giving my son Poly-vi-sol liquid vitamins since he was 11 months old. He is now three and honestly I can count on one hand how many times he has gotten sick. They are made by Enfamil and sometimes they are hard to find without the iron but I have had luck at Walmart.

Hi S.,

I can share with you what I do for my son & my pediatric patients. I can only speak about vitamins I know & have researched. I am unsure about the quality of any of the over-the-counter multi's for children. I give my little son a multi called Drs. Advantage Children's Complete Multi-vitamins and Minerals. The only place I know of to get this multi, is in my office (I'm a naturopathic physician in Tempe) & maybe other health stores (but I'm not sure which ones). However, that being said, a multi-vitamin for children is a great idea to supplement the daily diet, however, I would not suggest it to be the only support if your little one is getting a cold. There is another product we carry called Immugen that is more specific for treating children's colds. This might be a good place to start. Alternately, you can bring your little one in to see me. If you choose to go pick up these items, the office is open until 5pm. Normally we carry supplements as a service for patients, but you can just let our office manager know I sent you & she can call me if she needs to.

Good luck, hope you son feels better quickly & have a great vacation.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to drop me an e-mail (best for today) or call the office.

S.,
I've worked in pediatrics for a long time and can tell you that a multi-vitamin will not prevent a cold or shorten it. Your best bet is lots of fluids, saline nasal lavage and maybe try Zicam nasal swabs. Pretty much anything else won't be of much use to you.

Hope your son is better before you leave!

You might consider going the homeopathic rememdy route, or go to an herbalist. Sprouts has cold remedies for kids that are not full of junk (sure Whole foods does too) and Desert Sage Herbs in Chandler also has great stuff and helpful advice on the natural part. Good luck!
