My 1 Year Old Eats like Crazy

My son just turned 1 in January. He has been eating solids since he was about 6 months or so. Once he turned a year we stopped giving him formual. Every since then he has been eating alot more than normal. I am sure this is normal. My parents came up this weekend and stay with us and my mom says he has a problem with eating too fast. He will put every piece in his mouth one after an other. Even when his mouth is full he will continue to stuff more in. I don't think that he over eats becasue he does stop when he is full. I guess my question is...Is this a faze and how do I slow him down? My mom suggests one piece at a time but it takes forever and I don't get to enjoy my food.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice I am glad that I am not the only one going threw this. I did start to give him food in groups instead of all at the same time. We start with the bread and when he is done with that we move to the meat and veggies and then when he is done with that we move to the fruit. He likes to eat when we eat so the groups works the best. Now we are trying to get him to learn patience to stay in his high chair until we are all done. Thanks again.

LOL! Mine too ... my son can't take one Cheerio, it has to be 4-5 at a time as if I will shut the bag and not let him have another. This only started about a month ago, so it must be a phase. When my Mom gives me advice (w/o me asking for it), I smile & nod - then I do what works for me! ;)

my son did this too but eventually grew out of it most the way on his own & I only now have to remind him once in a while to slow down

I can't really give you any advice or tips, but I can say that my 1 year old does exactly the same thing! Just so you know...your son isn't the only one, and I don't think it's really a problem.

Mine does the same thing. I wouldn't worry about it. I do try and watch him so he doesn't over stuff and choke - but I let him feed himself. sometimes he picks a little bit, other times he puts in a lot (this morning it was1/2 a banana. )

if he is eating too fast just put a couple bites of food on the tray, let him eat that. Then wait a few seconds and then put more food in front of him.

I would suggest either eating before or after you feed your son if you want to enjoy your own meal. Eating too quickly can lead to indigestion and reflux. Also, it takes 15-20 minutes for the body to realize that it is full, so eating quickly can lead to overeating and obesity. Try to encourage your son to follow good eating habits by giving him a few pieces at a time and reminding him to chew slowly. Habits learned in childhood stick with you, and it's easier to teach good habits from the beginning than to try to break bad ones.

Don't worry about it. My one year old is the height of 3 year old and weighs the same as my 4 year old. But just like all of my other kids, by the time he's 2 or 3, he'll get where he won't eat anything hardly...then you'll worry about how he's staying alive he eats so little. Then when he's 5, the eating will go to a normal level. Basically he's storing up enough baby fat to get him through his toddler/pre-school years. As long as his doctor isn't worried about it then you shouldn't worry either.

Instead of one piece at a time, just put a smaller serving, like a serving spoonful on the plate at a time... once it's gone, have him wait a minute a minute until you put another one on. It'll give him time to chew and swallow.

Hi B. -

I am not sure if I would worry. I have a 13 month old that eats the exact same way! I just keep my eye on her while she eats.

B. welcome to the world of boys. My 2 year old did this and sometimes still does. Just be careful that you are nearby when he is eating just to be sure he doesn't choke on the stuff he has crammed into his mouth. Be glad he is a good eater. My kids ate solid foods early on as well, they didn't care much for that babyfood. as long as he is stopping when full I don't see that there is a problem just being a boy. PS. I belong to Fort Wayne Moms Unite as well it would be nice to meet you and show you my tank of a 2 year old that had the same eating habits.

enfamil makes a formula especially designed for 9-18 month olds. maybe try to add it to his milk or mix it up and put it in a sippy cup. make sure he's eating enough protein to fill him up. My boys love eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, grilled chicken. also try kashi oatmeal. it's made for grown ups but it is very high in protein and fiber to fill him up. makes a great breakfast.

my daughter just turned one in January as well. She eats the exact same way. And my mom says the exact same thing lol. He is fine. As long as he isn't choking, then I wouldn't worry about it. You can't sit there and feed him one piece at a time, do that and it would take all day for him to eat. I usually just kinda tell my mom that she is fine and she usually backs off. Good luck and I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I agree with giving him smaller portions. When he finishes with it, then give him a little more. Also, make sure he is getting plenty to drink... always have milk in a sippy cup available to him on his tray while he eats. Make sure he also has a sippy cup of water all throughout the day. This will help him feel fuller and more satisfied so maybe he won't shovel his food!
