She had a fever from Thursday until yesterday I took her into the er because she couldn't sleep or eat she would only drink juice they took blood work and it came back fine so they sent me home saying it was nothing so the next day I followed up with her doctor who also said nothing that night again she couldn't sleep and by that time hadn't had a bottle or any food for a day they tried to cath her to check for a uti but they couldn't get it in so again they sent me home with nothing that night I thought I noticed a sore on her tongue. The next day she was the same miserable crying she wouldn't eat anything just a little juice here and there and I noticed her tongue was white her breath was bad and her cry was hoarse I called the Oncall doctor and he said it was maybe an ear ache or strep so he prescribed amoxicillin he didn't think it was thrush since she didn't have any white patches she has had it before and I didn't think it looked the same either but she seems like she wants to eat but it hurts her mouth!! Plus she doesn't suck her thumb like usual anyway it's the 4th night of her waking up often crying!! I don't know what to do anymore does anyone have any ideas? Today her tongue seems almost cracked looking and brownish. She has had a little pedialyte her diapers aren't completely dry but their definitely not as wet as usual. Il say she urinated 2 times today, also she drools like crazy!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much everyone!! I do believe it was indeed hand foot and mouth disease. I ended up taking her to the docto the next morning. Her doc was booked so she had to see the nurse pract. Her tongue looked absolutely horrible by this time. Well she didn't know what it was so she called in the doctor who prescribed the amoxicillin (also not her doc) he checked it out was actually able to scrape some off (it was so thick and painful looking) but he was stumped too. They just kep saying something viral. The nurse did mention coxsackie but wasn't sure and prescribed "magic mouthwash" which didn't seem to help much anyway it's 2 weeks later it's not completely healed but she is finally back to her happy self but now she has a yeast infection from the stupid antibiotics and has blister like sores on her thumb she has her 1 year well check on Monday and her doc thought maybe the sores were from the H.F.M disease or it was herpes (I don't think so how would that happen?) again thank you so much everyone!! It's good to have the advice. It's frusterating I live in a small town so there isn't a huge variety of doctors and only 1 hospital I don't know what else to do short of driving the 4 hours to the Milwaukee childrens hospital!!

My son (16 mo) just finished his bout of Hand Foot and Mouth. There is no Rx for it, but it is miserable. They can get red rashy spots all over their face hands and feet as well as the sores in the mouth. Cold bland foods work the best. Good Luck.

It sounds like hand/foot/mouth disease. Try giving her popcicles, ice chips, sherbet, anything cold. Look between her toes for a little red rash or little red bumps on her hands. In her mouth, the h/f/m looks like canker sores with little white patches. Her lips may be brownish looking from the dehydration. Nevertheless, TAKE HER BACK TO THE DOCTOR if you can't get her to take a popcicle or some kind of liquid. Tell them you are not leaving until you get to the bottom of this.

Good luck!

Did the oncall doctor prescribe an antibiotic without examining her? If so, I think I would complain to someone about that. Anyhow, I agree with the some of the other posters that it sounds like hand, foot and mouth disease. It's pretty common, but miserable at your daughter's age. It's a virus so the antibiotic won't help. If she does have thrush the antibiotic will actually make that worse. I would take her to your regular doctor to get a definitive diagnosis and make sure she's hydrated. If it is hand, foot and mouth it just needs to run its course, but they can maybe give you ideas to ease her discomfort and keep her hydrated. Good luck!

It sound like what my 3 year old had, and he couldn't eat or barly drink and i brought him 3 times to the doc and gave me the run around, so they finally figuerd it was hand foot and mouth disease, and the only thing tha worked for him was the tylonal with codiene and he wasnt up crying and misserable any more, so tell the doc thats what you want so your poor baby won't be in pain anymore.

I have learned to question and question and question again when something does not feel right. Does your Ped have any other Dr in the office? If so make an appointment with them and see what they say, if this persists and they can not answer you go to another practice.

As far as the drinking and eating. My lil one is who 17 months now, goes thru this at times. I give her Gatorade, as she does not like the pedialite and she would eat some apple sauce for me as well.

I know it is frustrating and hard, keep up the good work and don't feel bad about questioning the Dr or perusing a feeling you have as a mommy!

Are you sure she's not teething? It sounds a lot like a mollar coming in, at nights the worst, fevern sore mouth, drooling, not wanting anything even thumb in mouth. No matter what it is you might trying handing her a popcicle. It will help hydrate her, numb her mouth some, and helps cool fevers.-H. (mom of six)

I am so sorry you and your little one are going through this. and to not get any answers at all would drive me insane. A lot of times babies will go through times where they dont eat so I would not worry a lot about that. But the not drinking? watch out for signs of dehydrationI would keep track of how many times she urinates and continue with keepin track of the intake of liquids. I have to say my daughter at that age would wake up in the middle of night screaming as if someone was murdering her with a fever because she was cutting her molars. Her tongue would be like a white color as well. At times i thought that something seriously was wrong because of the crying. I am not sayin that this is whats going on but it is the appropriate age . I hope the medication helps but I would demand to be seen again if you dont feel comfortable about the situation. I wish you the best of luck get some rest and hope your little one feels better soon. You need to get her to a pediatrician and INSIST that she receive some iv fluids. It is very dangerous to have a little one not drink or urinate very little in days!!! Get her hydrated! Did they check her gums and teeth, are her gums swollen? Drooling happens when they are cutting teeth! Hydration is the most important for these little ones, they can go into electrolyte imbalance real fast!
Good luck!

Sounds like hand, foot, and mouth to me. Take her back in immediately and make sure she gets hydrated. That could be the most dangerous part. Try cold liquids like Jell-O, popsicles, etc. Good luck and hope she gets better quickly! My daughter had that once and it was no fun. Hang in there!

I would suggest it could be hand, foot, and mouth. are there any white spots on her feet or hands? My dd had it, and they gave her an antibiotic to clear it up. Her's wasnt as bad, just the rash on her feet. I have heard that it can get pretty bad if it gets in the mouth, though. I would try to get her in to her ped as early as possible tomorrow, and in the meantime, try to keep her hands and feet clean and out of her mouth as much as possible.

I had a friend who's baby had a really hard time eating while she had it. Good luck!

don't give her any juice because the acid will burn her mouth/tongue and make it inflamed. Give her lots of water or milk and infant motrin can help. Sounds to me like she's cutting teeth. The motrin will help with that too. If her gums are hurting from teething, she is probably sucking or chewing on her tongue to help sooth but in the end it's making matters worse. Get her a liquid teething ring and freeze it and let her suck on it. The cold will numb her mouth and that will help. Also, you can use baby orajel to numb the area. Take her in to the doctor again and insist they check her for ear infection, mouth sores/infection.

It sounds just like Coxsackie, or hand, foot, and mouth disease. Its scary when you see those blisters popping up. Its viral, so I'd ask your doc twice about starting the antibiotic, as I think we all know by now the problems arising from using antibiotics with viruses. Unfortunately, she may be uncomfortable until it runs it's course, but here is what I have read from several sources that helps: Mix liquid Mylanta with equal part Children's Tylenol and apply to her tongue/mouth with a cotton swab. You can do this every couple of hours. Its also VERY contagious so keep her away from other kids under 5 as much as possible. I hope this does the trick!

I can't offer any answers except to say get her back in the doctor first thing tomorrow. And check her for signs of dehydration. If she seems dehydrated, take her in tonight. To check, pinch a little skin on her belly. If it stays in a pinched peak, she is dehydrated. It should go back down almost immediately. The brown tongue sounds alarming to me, that is why I say check for dehydration. I find it really odd that the on call doctor would prescribe antibiotics over the phone without seeing her again. My doc would never do that, they only give antibiotics to babies as a last resort after they have seen them. Definitely take her in again, and see a different doctor than the on call one if you can. I hope she feels better soon.

She sounds pretty dehydrated. Force fluids in if you have to. An eye dropper or a syringe will help. Pedialyte or water, gatorade even, soup broths. She needs fluids. minumum of 4-6+ wet dipes a day. Dehydration leads to all sorts of other issues. Get her checked out again!

you have to go and demand the er does something. she at least needs iv fluids. if her mouth is dry like that it means she's dehydrated. the fact that she's on antibiotics should help if there is an infection, but she needs to be hydrated.

I agree with some other posters that it sounds like hand, foot & mouth. Have you noticed any blister like sores on the bottoms of her feet & and her palms? they say that it is something that usually just little ones get it & I had heard that they only get it once usually, but my son had it twice & I even got it. And I will say that it was by far the worst sore throat I have ever had in my life. I agree that you should push liquids to make sure she is hydrated but I also know how bad it is to swallow anything. While there isn't anything they can give for it, I would bring her in to her regular doctor just to make sure she isn't dehydrated. Otherwise it just needs to run its course.

My daughter had something similar years ago. She had what is called hand, foot and mouth disease. She only had it in her mouth, which caused a lot of pain and she couldn't eat or drink either. It was aweful because there was nothing I could do to stop her from crying because it hurt so bad. She was given an antibiotic and they told me to give her tylenol or motrin for the pain. I hope this helps you out and she gets better soon!

I would take her back to the ER or to the Dr again right away. Dehydration in a child or anybody can be life threatening. I am not sure that the Amoxcillian will do anything for thrush or not but i don't believe so. Please a Dr right away

Sounds to me like hand, foot, and mouth disease. My son had it when he was 1 and was misdiagnosed by the er dr. He ended up better, but he was just miserable too! I think his fever got up to 104. After his fever broke, he got blisters and his hands and feet. He also got it again when he was 2, I got it as well. I had a really sore throat and about 4 days later little blisters showed up on my hands. Hope your daughter is feeling well soon! Here is some official info on it:
