Hi,
My 10 week old son has really dry cheeks. I've been using Gentle Naturals for exzema cream on his face for a little over a week and his eczema has cleared up. Should I still use the cream for his cheeks since it is a super rich moisturizer or is there something else you would reccomend? thank you!

Hi A.,
When my daughter has very dry patches, we use Alba's Unpetroleum Jelly and it works sooo well. I would skip the others' suggestions of Aquaphor because the first ingredient is petroleum, which is NOT good for the human body. You can find Unpetroleum at Henry's, Mothers, Whole Foods and online. It's not expensive.

My son has also had the same issue...honestly, good old fashioned, cheap vaseline works great.

A., I use Aquaphor on my kids. They don't have eczema but, my youngest son 5, had dry chaffed cheeks and Aquaphor helped so much. It's all water based so it's not too rich! Helps with chapped lips as well.
Hope this helps, S.

My now 11 week old had a case of baby acne of her cheeks that eventually turned into one big dry rash. When it just acne, the doctor suggested just aveeno baby wash/lotion. When it worsened and appeared to be more plaque like, the doctor recommended 1% hydrocortisone (sp?) cream. I think it started to clear on it's own but the cortisone cream definitely accelerated the process. Her cheeks have stayed relatively clear but she still has dry patches on arms and legs. The cream still works the best. We just try to spot treat as needed and use the baby lotion more regularly.

Hydration. Make sure he is drinking enough liquids. Never use soap or other cleansers on his face -- rinse him with water only at least twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. Avoid chemicals whenever possible -- they may solve one problem and cause another. Make sure your home is not too dry, especially if you are using the heater. Open the windows and allow fresh air into your home whenever possible. Boil water on the stove to humidify the household and use a humidifier in his room at night.

a little bit of jojoba oil should do the trick, it penetrates deep in the skin, you can get it at trader joes, or health food store.

Yes, keep moisturizing every day. My son and I both have extremely dry skin. We use aveeno bath oil and aveeno lotion every day. If you do it everyday it will stop the eczema from coming back or at least keep it to a minimum.

Good luck!

I suggest using coconut oil it is natural and can not hurt him if he rubs his face and then puts his hands in his mouth. Bless you!

I agree with the other poster to stick with what works as certain things may work for him and not others, and vice versa. My son has eczema and we've tried everything and Gentle Naturals never worked for us. We used Aveeno products, topped with a layer of Aquaphor. We recently tried Curel lotion w/no fragrance and it's really nice and non-irritating.

Some good suggestions already. I would also check your labels for mineral oil, petroleum & petrolatum. Most baby oils are pure mineral oil, which is a derivative of crude oil. This is very occlusive to the skin, does not let it breathe or absorb moisture, like covering it with saran wrap. Unfortunately, it's widely used in personal care products.

My kids have eczema & it got this advice from my friend who has had severe eczema since she was a baby. This is the short version.
Besides avoiding allergens, to keep eczema under control, soak the skin daily - use mild or NO cleanser at all, escpecially since your baby is only 10 weeks old - he can't be that dirty! Getting the skin wet really softens it & gets it ready to absorb a good lotion. You can layer a quality baby oil (not mineral oil) & then lotion on top.

She uses Arbonne's baby line for her kids & the anti-aging body serum & lotion for herself & older child. She's had side effects from the years of cortizone creams, steriods & other doctor's recommendations for eczema so I would steer clear of those if he continues to have flare-ups. I've seen her hands & feet cracked & bleeding from eczema. She just turned 40 & this is the first thing that has worked for her.

Since it's on your baby's face, it will be easy to monitor. I would also check under his arms, behind his knees & between his toes. Those are places they can get it really bad & you don't notice right away. Congrats on your new little one!

My son gets seasonal eczema and my daughter has eczema year round. I like Aquaphor the best.

My kids eczema definitely acts up when the weather changes, especially during dry and cold weather. So we lather them up with Aquaphor at least every other day and definitely right after baths.

I would keep putting the lotion on your son throughout the cold season to keep his skin moist. Dry skin will aggravate his eczema.

I would stick with Gentle Naturals since it's working well. Eczema is really hard to control and if you find something that works, it's usually best to stick with it.

We use Aquaphor daily on my two year old and have been since he was just a few months old.

Pure Shea Butter is an excellent remedy for eczema. You need to get it from a beauty supply. There is one in the Carson mall that has a very pure version. You don't want any perfumes, nor do you want the watered down versions they sell in regular stores.

Hi A.,

I hope you don't mind my response to your post. I am a mom of a 1 and 3 year old and after having them I became really interested in the ingredients in all of our personal care products and began making my own skin care products. I spent the last two years learning about toxins in our personal care products and the benefits of using all natural, organic products. I am now working on the launch of my own line!

I had never heard of the Gentle Naturals cream, so I looked it up and read the ingredients. Although, it contains many natural ingredients, it also contains chemical preservatives (parabens) and other irritants.

If you don't mind my advice, I would discontinue using the Gentle Naturals cream and instead use something really natural. I would be happy to send you some of the organic baby products I have made. If you are interested, feel free to check out my blog www.zoeorganics.wordpress.com. I have been passing out samples to my friends because I am totally sold on using natural and organic products after using them on my own kids!

I promise my response is not to "sell" you on my own brand, but I truly believe that us moms need to help educate each other and when we find something fabulous that works, we need to share it!

My pediatrician recommends using Crisco for chapped skin or eczema on the face and this sparked an idea to create an organic baby balm using natural oils and extracts that smells amazing and works like a dream.

I could go on and on, but if you are interested in talking more, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

:) H.

Hi A.. I have 2 little girls and I've always just used Calendula lotion on their face. It's so good at keeping their cheeks moisturized and also clears up rashes on other parts of the body. I get mine at Whole Foods.
