My 11Th Month Old Is Pooping Green Stools.

I recently just changed my 11th months old formula and she has been having green bowel movements, also with constipation and green stools. She wakes up at night screaming. Ive tried apple juice and not sure if its the best choice for her? What would be the best choice of food to give her? Should I consider changing back to her old formula?

What can I do next?

I would bet it has to do with changing her formula. My son got constipated each time we changed his formula...which I don't recomend doing often, but he had some allergy concerns and we kept having to try new things! I also think I remember some of the stools being green, so I would give it another day or two but if it doesn't get better, you may consider going back to the old formula. Also, you can try some Fiber One products...they taste good and they do have a lot of fiber in them to help clean her out. They have granola bars, pop tart things, and I think maybe even frozen waffles...oh and muffins. You have to make the muffins, but it's a mix so it's easy.

If you are worried about constipation I would give her prune juice. You can mix it into the formula too. Or you can puree some prunes or plums and add it to her cereal or give it to her straight.

Go easy - you don't want to give her diarrhea.

If she isn't happier in a week, I would switch her back.

Is she eating mostly green vegetables? That could show up as green in her stools. Constipation could also be her diet, separate from the formula. Eliminate bananas, cheese, dairy products other than her formula, rice. This is opposite of the "brat" diet for diarrhea. I can't remember what the t stands for. I think that perhaps apple juice would have the same affect as applesauce. Apples are good for constipation but only if you leave on the skins. Add roughage to her diet.

Depending on what her previous formula was the dairy make up of the new formula could easily be causing the constipation. Dairy can be constipating. My grandson had a great deal of difficulty with constipation starting around 6 months. He could drink formula but had to stay completely away from other dairy products. After he was a year he mostly drank rice milk. The doctor had his mother add a product to his food but I can't think of it's name now. It used to be only gotten with a prescription but it's otc now. It draws moisture into the intestines to soften the stool.

Because this change may not be related to the new formula or it may just be that her system needs to get used to the new formula I wouldn't change the formula for a couple of weeks. But I would add roughage to her diet and stay away from other dairy products to see if that works. I'd also be sure that she is drinking plenty of liquids. I'd stop the apple juice for now and try prune juice or the apple juice/prune juice combination.

As to the waking up screaming. That, too, may be unrelated to the constipation. When she wakes up screaming does she need to have a bm? Feel of her tummy. Is it too firm? Is it tender? My brothers had difficulty with constipation too and when they were babies my mother would insert her finger in the anus and feel the poop. If it was hard and ready to come out she would help it along. Now you can use a glycerin suppository.

We used Wal-Mart's formula when we used it at all. When we switched to Carnation my son had nasty green poop. It was awful and he was horribly gassy. We switched back to the Wal-Mart brand and he was okay. So switch back and see how she does. At this point, you could also begin the switch over to milk. Add a few tablespoons of milk to her formula and add a little more each day. If she has a sensitive stomach, which it sounds like she may, add more every few days. Milk is a lot cheaper then formula, unless they need soy milk, but not many actually children do. For constipation, my mom recommended apple juice and a touch of karo syrup in a bottle. Both worked well for my kids.

Hi, green poop is a classic sign of food allergies. It is actually blood in the stool caused by the intestinal upset. My baby went thru the same thing and she did scream in pain as well. Many doctors and research later we learned she was allergic to dairy and egg. She is now 3 and we have had her on a dairy and egg free diet since 11 months old and she does great. The allergist says she may outgrow it in a year or so. Good luck, and definitely pay attention to any diet changes that cause reactions. I would change her off whatever new product is causing the reaction and see a pediatric allergist. Three pediatricians had no idea that green poop was a sign of allergies. It was another mom who told me. Good luck!

The green is most likely the change in diet. The formula probably has a high content of something that is causing the green stool. Compare the labels of the old formula to the new formula and then google to see if that is the cause. Maybe she is able to digest/process this formula easier than the other.

Ahhhh the rainbow colors of baby poop (WHY ON EARTH do decorators choose those colors -mustard, pea grean, yellowy brown every 30 years? Do they not have kids? Or DO they and they just want to color coordinate?).

Green is totally normal.

The only colors to look out for are Red and Tarry Black. All the others are in the normal range.

The constipation on the other hand, sounds like a bad reaction to the formula switch. I'd personally switch back.

My daughter's pediatrician said that white grape juice is MUCH easier for toddlers to digest.
I saw one other response that suggested soy. I absolutely wouldn't do that if I were you. There is plenty of information out there about the bad effects of soy - ie) causing early puberty etc.... My daughter is lactose intolerant so when I stopped nursing I started her on soy, and lactaid milk. I added the soy - because the pediatrician thought that she was drinking too much milk - but since that's all she ever wanted (I'm a huge milk drinker too) - I figured I could cut her milk with soy and then she could have it more often than 3 times a day if she wanted. ANYWAY - at two years of age - she was having terrible mood swings, and started having really dark black hair grow in on her legs and arms. I read an article about the soy and how bad it is, stopped giving it to her, and like magic - the moods swings went away, and so did all the dark hair on her arms and legs! She's 5 now, and takes a "digestive advantage - lactose intolerance" chewable tablet with breakfast and she is good to go for the day (24 hours)- all the pizza, grilled cheese, milk, yogurt, icecream etc. without any ill effects from the lactose.
Good luck!

It could be from the formula. I had the same thing happen with my daugher but it turned out it was because she ate something "blue"
blue jello, yogurt, blueberries and things like that will also make the stools turn green.

Hi...I was told a long time ago, by my pediatrician, that green stools indicate too much sugar in the diet. Sure enough, every time my girls eat too much sugar, I can almost count on seeing green poop within 24hrs. Just a thought.

I'm a little confused because in the absence of any food coloring doesnt green stools mean that things are moving too quickly through the digestive tract rather than slowly as in constipation?

I agree that it doesnt sound like she is handling the new formula well at all. A call to her doc is probably in order to help you sort things out.

I hope she feels better!

Many moms change their baby's formula around this age. When I did, the pediatrician told me to either feed them the last feeding of the day with formula and then start with cows milk the next day, Or to give them a bottle of Pedialyte between the last formula feeding and the cow's milk, sort of like a palate cleanser. Then they'd be so hungry, they wouldn't reject the new milk.
With your baby it seems like the new formula doesn't agree with her (green stools). Instead of apple juice, try white grape juice. It is gentle on the stomach.
The best thing to do is consult your pediatrician. Good luck and God bless
