My 13 Month Old Wont Drink Milk

I have a 13 month old who has been on whole milk for a little over a month. Last week he started refusing milk. We have tried adding strawberry flavoring to it, but that hasn't worked. His pediatrician said this is normal and to supplement his calcium other ways. He will eat yogurt, but I am wondering if any of you have any good ideas for calcium besides this. He loves cheese, but I have to limit cheese because it constipates him. I feel bad only giving him juice to drink, but I do not know what else to do. Please help me with any ideas any of you might have.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to each of you for your suggestions. We tried mixing him a yogurt/milk shake and putting it in his sippie cup and he LOVES it. I started adding a little more milk each time, and he hasn't noticed. I appreciate all of your advice. It is so hard to know all the answers, and it is nice to have help from others.

Try vanilla milk sounds funny but it is 1/2 a teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. My last beby would not drink milk unless I made it this way and I was afraid to get her stuck on chocolate milk. There are also sugar free milk additives like strawberry milk and banana and chocolate they taste really good and I like the fact I'm not sugaring my kids up!

Try soy milk with added calcium, almond butter, or almond milk. Check at your local health food store, there are lots of supplements that contain Calcium.

i would keep trying strawberry or chocolate mix. ovaltine rich chocolate has lots of vitamins in it. my daughter would only take it out of a bottle, and would not drink white milk out of a cup, until she finally started strawberry milk. also, try cereal in a bowl with milk, and let it get a little soggy, maybe he'll like that. good luck!

My daughter wouldn't drink milk either at that age. What I figure out was that she didn't like *cold* milk, but did like it warm. So, I warmed up the milk and gave it to her in a sippy cup while I held her. Works great.

My son went through a phase like that and still wont drink a whole lot of milk. I was concerned about his calcium intake and talked to his doctor and he said its normal and that if he getting at least a measuring cup of milk a day hes fine. I did two things though, one i started adding nesquick powder to his milk sometimes, it has added calcium in it and is healthy for them. That worked a little. Then i started buying the gummy vitamins for kids and he loves takin them cause they taste good, he gets two every morning and that makes me feel better about his vitamin and calcium intake. There may even be a calcium supplement. Also my son loves to eat slices of cheese, i buy the ones that are sliced and already individually packaged by kraft in mild cheddar. My son also loves the yoplait kids yogurt. and you might try some pediasure too. Hope this helps.

Have you tried giving him Pediasure? He may like it because it is closer to formula than milk. And you might try mixing it half and half if he will drink the Pediasure to ease him into plain milk.

My son developed an allergy to milk once we took him off formula. Our pediatrician said just don't give him milk (he gets soymilk instead) and he'll eventually grow out of it. He's 20 months now and gets yogurt and cheese occasionally but gets most of his calcium through broccoli and other veggies. We also water down our juice before we give it to him. I keep a pitcher in the fridge and mix about 1/4 juice to 3/4 water. He's never had straight juice so he really doesn't know the difference and I don't feel guilty about refilling the cup and the juice lasts twice as long.

Hi Gaila,
Your son will be ok! I have 4 kids and a few of mine did that as well. We just let them eat lots of yogurt, ice cream, anything like that. For my youngest I have even given him the nutripals. He liked those it has everything in it that they need.
Sometimes I buy a gallon a day of milk for the kids then other days we are lucky to drink it in 3 days. They go in spurts.

Hello Gaila,

I would try to add some chocolate favoring, or put some milk into a cup with some ice cream in it for him, like a milkshake, then maybe u could pick his favorite ice cream out and maybe he will never taste the regular milk.& Ice Cream has calicum in it all ready, make sure on the side to be giving him a chewable vitamin with extra calcium. I have to give my son a vitmain everyday with extra iron in it. So I would try these things and go from there.

Though neither of my kids have ever decided they didn't like milk, we still make shakes for them... Call it a yogurt shake - add some yogurt to the sippy cup and add some milk, shake it up and whala... yogurt shake. (Maybe don't let him see you pouring milk in there). Ice cream is another option, you can look for a carb conscious ice cream that has less sugar in it.

Good luck.

They have the pediasure drinks now and I believe they have pretty much all the calcium and other nutrients in them. I had to give them to my oldest one time and they actually taste really good. You could try that and see if he will take it and just keep offering him milk.

Cheese is great! And if he is like my sons?...the juice will help him stay un-constipated! Do you ever notice when he has a little more juice than normal? his poops are more yucky and more frequent?? Apple juice is a great pooper-mover..and so letting him eat more cheese and drink more juice, balances the whole system....but if apple juice is a tummy upset? Try the white grape juice..and Juicy Juice brand is one of the healthiest, 100% juice, juices to give...between the yogurt (let him have as much of that as he wants too, as it strengthens his digestive system) and cheeses, and that should be PLENTY of calcium! How do I know? I have had the same problem w/my now 3 yr. old son, and he has grown up just as healthy as a horse, his check-ups are fantastic..and he still isn't a HUGE milk fan, but we keep doing what has worked till now and will keep on till he likes his milk...or not! No worries Momma..keep up the great work!

If he likes yogurt, then let him have yogurt instead of trying to force him to drink milk. If you're worried that he won't get enough calcium that way, you can give him calcium-added orange juice. Dark green vegetables are also high in calcium, and at 13 months, he should be able to eat them with no problem. By the time she was a year old, my daughter loved broccoli with cheese sauce poured over it. They'll also help with the constipation problem.
Does he like scrambled eggs? Add a splash of milk to the eggs when you beat them, and top them with cheese.
Does he like oatmeal? Try adding a little milk to it.
Does he like grits? Add cheese to them. Oatmeal and grits will also prevent constipation.
I wouldn't add things like Quik to the milk - too much processed sugar.
