Any suggestions on trying to get my 14 month old to eat table food? He gags when it is in his mouth and he never tries to chew it, it just sits in his mouth until he chokes.

What can I do next?

A friend of mine has a two year old boy who was diagnosed with sensory disorder. Some food, a sippy cup, all of these feel funny in his mouth and he would only eat certain things. I had never heard of it before but it sees more than the usual doesn't want to eat thing that kids go thorugh. I don't mean to scare you or anything but it might be something to check out...

My daughter had a reflux problem and we had to hold off on giving her actual food longer than most people do. Does he do okay with the baby food? DD had a hard time with Stage 3 baby food (not choking). I don't think she liked the texture, so she didn't want to chew it. I'd talk with the pediatrician about it, but when we went through the choking phase, our pediatrician said it was nothing to worry about and that some kids just take longer than others to develop a desire to eat more solid foods. (therefore they won't chew) See what your dr. says.

He may be 14 months but developmentally he is more like 10 and a half months. However, he should still be able to eat some things. Ask your pediatrician for a referral to be evaluated by a speech pathologist who has experience in pediatric dysphagia. She will watch him eat and assess his oral motor skills, ability to move the food around his mouth, chew, swallow, etc. You definately don't want him to choke on the food. You also don't want it to go down the wrong way and get into his lungs. Hope this helps.

It may just be that he is simply not ready for solid food or a sippy cup. My youngest (17 months) only started on solid foods about 2 months ago. He was not premature at all at birth....just slower to be interested in solids and a sippy. He literally went overnight from eating only stage 2 baby food to eating regular solid foods that we all eat.

maybe try smaller pieces or making it more mushey...i had to do that when my son started on solids...it may not be the premature thing, it may just be the texture he is not liking.
