My 17 mo daughter has a stye. She has had a wild white eyelash hair on the bottom lid (that grows) since she was born. When we 1st noticed that her eye lid was a little red I noticed it was right on that spot where the wild hair was. Her pediatrician & the ophthalmologist both confirmed it was a stye. The ophthalmologist said that it should disappear within a month. She was prescribed a med to be gived 2x a day & we have to wash it with a hot washcloth 2x a day. It has gotten smaller but hasn't disappeared as of yet. It doesn't look like it popped though. The doc said that if it didn't disappear within a month they would have to do surgery. That is, put her out for a minute and cut it open. My husband & I are not ok with this at all. Do you guys have any opinions or have gone through this yourselves? Your input is much appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

A.,

wow what Mimi sugested was a great read!!! To be honest I do not know what to do with a 17 month old with a stye, but since having my son I have gotten 3 of them the first one I went to my eye doctor, after 3 days in pain I just could not take it anymore. She prescribed me some meds as she thought it was infected. But she instructed me to use some petroleum jelly the next time I started getting one…well the second came and went and at the first site of it I cleaned my eye well then dabbed it with the petroleum jelly 3-4 times a day and in 2 days it was totally gone. It really helps with the dry feeling and clamed the itchiness for me as well. Now I have my third right now I am on day 3 and it is still a little swollen but truth be told I have not been so diligent this time around after all I to am chasing a 17 month around now…lol but I think tomorrow I should be fine. If I thought my son was getting one I think I would start with the petroleum jelly….??? HTH…

Good Sunday Morn, A.!

I used to ALWAYS get 'styes'! As long as I can remember! The worst stye I ever got was at age 22 or so AND it was the last! I had an appointment to have it removed (the only time I EVER had to go to that extreme) and was in the car, on the way when I had an itch on the eyelid, scratched and it POPPED out, gross it was! I can't imagine a baby having one and not being able to talk about it to anyone. Have the Docs discussed removing the white eyelash? Perhaps that has something to do with that particular area of the eye & the stye????

Keep the 'almost hot' compresses on her eye as much as you possibly can as that 'draws' the 'gunk' as well as the medicine.

You didn't say if you were seeing a pediatric opthamologist or not???? Perhaps a second opinion is a good idea at this moment, that is what I would do before having a surgical procedure.

Best,
A.

Hi A.,

I started to give you a LOT of info and then I found most of it very concisely put at http://www.remedies-for-natural-health.com/stye-remedies....

The one thing I will highlight is that if there is a stye present then it is a warning sign that the immune system is not working at it's optimum level and your little one is susceptible to other things as well. This actually could be a good thing because now you know that there is a need there.

There are several ways to build the immune system and prevent these things from coming back. You can fix this without surgery. If you are interested in how to do it simply and inexpensively I can help and I'd love to help...let me know.

Regards,

M.

Hi A.,

I am 29 years old and I've suffered from styes since I was very young. Doctors and Specialists will prescribe medication (ointments) to apply as well as warm water compresses. Honestly, none of it worked for me. I had to have them surgically removed. I don't want to scare you but it is extremely painful. I had 6 styes b/w both eyes. After surgery, til this day I have to rinse/wash my lids with baby shampoo. This was told to me by the doctor who performed the surgery a few years ago. I would recommend him, but unfortantely he has retired. I beleive the medical term for this condition is called...granulated eye lids, and they are produced by natural oils that build up around the eye/lash area- this is why rinsing/ washing lids area with baby shampoo helps control the production of oils around the eyes. Good Luck with you little one. Please keep posted on her condition.

Hi, A.. I know it feels awful to think about your little one having surgery done so close to her precious little eye. However, if you don't have the stye cured completely, the infection will come back over and over again, and it can spread to her eyeball. It's better to have it done and protect her eye than to let it continue and risk damage to the eye.

I hope everything works out just fine for your your little one.

Peace,
Syl

Hello A., I wouldnt let the doctor do surgery it seems a bit extreme. My daughter had a chalazia, which is the same thing as a stye except it is deeper in the lid, it was horrible she actually had 2 and it looked like two big bumps in her eyelid. The opthalmologist said they usually get operated on, but didnt recommend it for young children since he said the surgery itself would destroy the tear glands. He told me to boil an egg and when it isnt too hot and still warm to place it on her eyelid. the heat from the egg would eventually make it pop. Well it worked...one day she woke up and I noticed they were gone. Hope this helps.

My grandmother swears by lightly rubbing a GOLD ring on the stye. I have tried it myself and it seems to work. I'm not sure why and if you'll have any luck doing this to a 17 month old!

I have worked in daycare for three years now and have nine children. I have dealt with plenty of styes. With my own children I have popped them when they have gotten smaller. I have put a sewing needle in alcohol and then used it to pop the stye. But it is up to you what you would do. That is just a suggestion to avoid surgery.

Our son, now 3 years old, has a stye about that age. My ped. explained that it's like an ingrown hair, just in a bad spot that can cause problems so we need to watch it more closely. We did the meds and the warm compresses and it went away within a month. You would think that things like ths would go away faster but it took majority of the month to get it completely gone.

Because of the location there are no ointments, etc that you can put on it b/c it will cause more damage to the eye. The warm compresses are the best bet.
