Hi A.,
When my daughter was about 15 months old she was running through the house, missed the step going down in between the kitchen and living room and ended up at the hospital. She was unable to walk but her foot did not swell much. They did not do an x-ray at the hospital which they should have but sent us to her pedi the next day. Thankfully, her pedi did an x-ray and saw that it was indeed broken. Apparently, because it did not swell or bruise much the hospital didn't feel that it was broken. She could not walk but she was not crying over it either. Due to my own personal experience I would take her to the doctor. It might not be anything at all but at least you'll have peace of mind. Good luck!

little kids do not always show classic signs of fractures. I would bring her in as soon as possible for an x-ray. good luck.

Hey!

Our son did something like this and it turned out he had broken a bone in his leg. If they hit it just right at this age, it doesn't take much to cause a small fracture. His happened at school, just jumping off a really tiny slide. He did it again the next year, but it turned out that he just badly bruised the bone. The whole thing got my pretty freaked out because it just didn't seem like a big enough incident to cause a break and I was worried about whether his bones were okay, but the pediatrician assured me that at this age, these things happen when they get it just right. I would definitely take her in to the peditrician, I felt really badly for not having done it sooner.

I think swelling and discoloration is a big sign if it is broken but it could be sprained or something. I would def. still take her in and let them decide if she needs an xray.
Because she may need to wear an ace bandage or something.
Poor baby.
Goodluck.

RICE, Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate. These are the things I was taught in all medical training i've had. So far as a medical assistant and massage therapist it reigns true. Be it sprain, strain, fracture always use the RICE mmethod. DO NOT use heat the first 24-48hrs. That will only make things worse. After 72hrs you can alternate ice and a warm foot soak. Remember to alternate. Start and end with ice. With three athletic kids i've encountered it all.

Bones in children this young are not fully developed and tend to be more flexible and less likely to break unless there is a very large trauma; however, when a child is telling you it hurts and will not walk on the foot at all, it is possible that she fractured a small bone somewhere in her foot or ankle and this should be checked out by a doctor. More than likely, it is a sprain or strain and can be treated that way, but I am one who leans to the side of caution and would want my child to be seen by a doctor. The only problem with waiting any longer is that if it is a fracture or dislocation of some kind, waiting could do more harm than good. You wouldn't want it to heal in the wrong position, if it's a fracture. One indicator of a stress fracture is the inability to bear weight on that limb.

Sounds like she just sprained it really bad. It will just take some time for her to walk on it right again. I remember one time I sprained my ankle from a car wreck, it took a few weeks for me to get back to walking normal again. (I even had crutches that I didn't like to use and didn't really.)

Sounds like she'll be fine, but just needs some time to get over the pain.

There is an herbal formula where you can make a fomentation and apply it to her foot or soak it in a 'tea' of it. It's called Complete Tissue formula now, but used to be called BF&C for Bone, Flesh, and Cartilage. Great stuff! www.herbsfirst.com

Not worth the risk -- I'd get to her pediatrician. Worst case scenario: you wasted a copay.

if it's not hurting when she's playing it sounds like you may have a drama queen on your hands. I'd give her some motrin and just keep an eye on her , not making a big deal out of it, you may find she forgets she's hurt and she gets up and walks on her own on it.

I am a firm believer in peace of mind. You will rest better and your daughter will see that you are not concerned if you just go have it checked out. Most likely it is not serious, but it cant hurt to have a doc take a look so that you will not worry and stress out about it.

Best of luck!

Invest in a small bandage wrap for support....my boys have played superhero and a few times landed wrong no breaks but the extra support helped. If no swelling and is still having problems after 72 hours I'd consider doctor. Most doctors for feet swear by epsom salt a little soak for that foot with a bit of that salt may help also. Best of luck
