H.,
Try baby calm, I get it at my health food store give it to her before bed and it will help her sleep and have bm's.
My 27 month old daughter has had a difficult time with bowel movements for about 10 days now. When she does go, she strains, and sometimes even cries. They are coming out a few hard "balls" at a time. I bought a glycerin suppository, and although it did make her go within about 10 minutes, it was about 8 little balls. I would like to know if anyone has had luck with any home remedies, or over the counter stool softeners. I hesitate to make a doctors appt and waste the co-pay for them to tell me to do something that I should have already tried. Any suuggestions are appreciated!

My 4 year old has been constipated since he was an infant. At about 1 year of age the doctor put him on miralax. That worked but if he was still having problems, we would use the liquid suppositories (not sure about the spelling) and this would help too. I would check with the doctor about the dosing. I think it was 2 ozs 2x's a day. However, we have found, that what really works for him is red, yellow and orange peppers about 2x's a week. For some reason that combination helped him. Also, try to stay away from rice, bananas, and apples. those will tend to constipate. The doctor also orinally suggested prunes, those did not help my son but they should have. Also, some Karo syrup, i think a teaspoon, but check with doctor.
Good luck.
Hello H.. I've had the same problem with my child. He is a bit older than your daughter. I would worry because it would be 7 to 8 days before he would go #2. I didn't want to go the laxative route so I talk to his pediatrician and he suggested adding more fruits and vegetables. Lots of corn, beans, and salad. I had to make sure he was drinking more too. Also, I had to add more things with Olive Oil incorporated into it (cooking or salad dressings). Prune juice, raisins, and 100% natural juices helped too. He does much better now. I'm not sure if this helped. Good luck, I hope you find help for your little one.

The pediatrician told us to put mineral oil in the freezer, it won't freeze. Then put 2 teaspoons in a cup of juice every morning. That should soften enough to move the bowels but not so much that she has diarrhea.
Best of Luck,
J.
In addition to giving lots of fiber filled foods (that you can get a 2-year-old to eat!) mine would always get relaxed enough after a warm bath to go. Worked every time. Good luck.
My daughter has had problems since she was about 4 years old, and she actually started refusing to go b/c she said it hurt too much. Her pediatrician put her on Miralax. (At that time it was prescription only...it is now available in the store.) He has kept her on it...she's almost 7 now. He said there are no long term effects and it doesn't cause a dependence. It is a stool softener and it REALLY works. I would call your pediatrician first b/c your daughter is younger, but I absolutely swear by it!
Good luck!
K. (Even though it's over the counter my doctor still gives me a prescription b/c there is a generic form and it's cheaper with my insurance to get the generic prescription.)
*one other thing we did when she was younger was make "prune whip." We mixed a jar of baby food prunes and whip cream for a "treat" and she loved it and it helped...be careful not to let her eat too much!
