My 2 Year Old Woke up a Few Days Ago with a Split Bottom Lip

Not sure what happened she does generally flop and flip, and it has been quite dry where we live. So it was split pretty bad, I was putting chapstick on it but she licks it off alot cause of the flavoring. It is not looking like its healing and its looking more raw and ragged today. I am making sure she drinks plenty of fluids and putting chapstick on but is there something better? something medicated? poor baby looks like she was on the loosing end of a brawl.

What can I do next?

For my sons chapped lips, I made chapstick by melting beeswax with olive oil. I had little containers of it all around the house (one is not enough) and used it often. It solved the problem and I didn't have to wonder what he was ingesting by licking his lips.

This may sound odd, but I use Lansinoh on my lips (and cuticles, actually). I got turned onto it when I was nursing my daughter; it's actually for sore, chapped nipples. But the stuff is absolutely fantastic for lips, too. It's a thick emollient, no taste and stays put. I've recommended it to so many people and they love it. You can find it in Target in the newborn product section and it lasts forever. Excellent reviews, too:

I'd stay clear of the petroleum-based products like vaseline and aquaphor, personally.

Added: (you'll notice in the reviews that many moms also use it for chapped lips!)

I would recommend a good cool air humidifier for her room.

LeeLee's right, Lansinoh is great for lips, non-irritating and unflavored, and thick enough to be protective.

My son is very prone to dry, chapped lips that then split open at night. I find that things like vaseline lip therapy (or even just plain old petroleum jelly) work better than chapstick, which is too waxy and not really moisturizing enough. It's hard to keep on during the day, but make sure you put it on just before bedt, and depending on how soundly your daughter sleeps, you may even be able to put it on after she is asleep. A humidifier in her room at night may also help.

I use Neosporin on my son when his lip splits. I also use it on his cuticles. I put it on as I am tucking him in at night.

I use pure lanolin on dry cracked lips. It is also good for around the nose when it is irritated from blowing. It is very sticky but is soothing and heals usually overnight. I was told to use this on my raw, irritated nipples when I first began breastfeeding. Works like a charm and since it is all-natural, can be safely ingested. Two brands are Lansinoh and Medela. You can find them at Target in the baby dept. near the breast pumps, etc.

i would use Carmex instead - she won't want to lick that off! It's not flavored, so she'll keep it on. that's what i use when my lips get really dry.

Plain Vaseline works just fine. My youngest daughter has this habit of licking her lips... not just licking but licking all around her lips so that she has this huge purple ring around her mouth. It's horrible. The only thing that does the trick in minimizing it is Vaseline unless it starts cracking, in which case we use Aquaphor ointment. I have a tub for such occasions, as well as other dry skin emergencies.

I suggest putting on unflavored chapstick right before bed. I do this in the Winter with my boys...they wake up with soft, non-chapped lips. :o)

Poor kiddie - that happens to my son in the winter. I don't give him flavors in the chapstick. I get the menthalatum brand that tastes like Vicks and he won't lick it off. He doesn't like it but he knows it works and his lips are much better after a day.

I'd try vaseline... it will soften the area so it doesn't crack anymore, it takes gross so she won't want to lick it off, and put it on before bedtime (if you can get a little on AFTER she goes to sleep, even better!)... licking it's only going to aggravate the area. I doubt she busted her lip on something, it's probably just cracked due to dryness and the weather changing.

Try Lanolin! If you are/were a nursing mom you've probably already got a tube of Lansinoh around!

ETA-- Great minds think alike if I'd read before I'd typed I wouldn't have repeated LeeLee!

Aquaphor - I STILL get horribly bad chapped lips and they sell small tubes of it.
