My 5 Month Old Has Trouble Sleeping

My 5 month old little boy hasn't been sleeping for the past month. When we took him in for his 4 month well baby check up, we were told that he is teething. Sure enough a few days latter, he started to become cranky throughout the day, drooling really bad and sticking everything into his mouth. That's when he started waking up during the night. But when he wakes up, all he wants is his pacifier. But when it falls out of his mouth, he starts to cry again. He would start to wake up around 2:30 am and by 5:00 am, I would put him in his swing because that was the only thing that calmed him down. Then a we started to notice that he was spitting up a lot throughout the day. He would spit up hours after eating. So I started to read through all the baby books I have and it looked like he was suffering from acid reflux. I took him to the doctor's and his pediatrician gave me a prescription antiacid. He has been on it for a couple of days now. He hasn't been spitting up, but now he wakes up around 11:30 pm and is now constipated. My oldest son, who is now 3 1/2 years old, had the same trouble as a baby, but when we put him on the antiacid, he become a much happier baby and slept better. So I am wondering if anyone can offer some advice and helping him sleep better through the night because when he doesn't sleep, neither do I.

What can I do next?

We had one son who had worse problems on the reflux meds than without it. Our other son was treated some what unconventionally and did well. We did Zantac in the am and Prevacid in the pm. Prevacid keeps the constipation from being a problem while still being able to control the reflux. It was a one day cure for his severe constipation. Also increased his fluid intake, which also helped. He wasn't on the Prevacid for very long and now does great on just the Zantac. GL

I don't know if you are breastfeeding or not, but you may consider removing dairy from his(or your) diet. both of my sons had reflux and dairy played a large part in it. Babies are commonly sensitive to milk protein. Dairy can also be constipating. You also may have to give the antacid a little more time. His little esophagus may need time to heal as well. Another thing to consider is that he has now gotten himself into an unfortunate pattern of night waking, so even though he may feel better, he is used to getting up during the night. Also, at 5 mos he may actually be hungry at night. Some babies eat more than others and feeding more frequently can be soothing to a baby with reflux. I would give him another week then try to give him a chance to soothe himself back to sleep if he does wake at night. This way you can be sure he's not waking due to discomfort. As for the constipation, try giving him a little prune juice until his body hopefully adjusts to the antacid. Good luck!

i have read that antacids can be constipating so i would add more fluids to his diet and maybe some diluted prune juice. it seems like some thing is uncomfortable for him. figure out what that is and i bet he will be sleeping better again. maybe the costipation is causing him discomfort. he could be backed up and gassy and that is never comfortable. i htink this all gets worse at night too!try and get his poop softened and regular and he may start feeling better!

Excess slobber can cause tummy upset too if he is swallowing it. My son drooled so much I had to change his shirt a few times a day during teething times. Try teething tablets for the pain of teething too, they are all natural and safe. Even Tylenol an be given to a infant. The constipation I would call the Dr as it could be a reaction to the meds. My daughter had a ton of tummy issues as a baby, reflux and constipation, I had to stop breast feeding and put her on Nutramigen and she flourished! For us it was the miracle cure for her as she really did so great and we could stop the reflux meds. Nutramigen is a type of formula that is predigested so it is a lot easier on their bodies.
