My 5 Y O Has B. O.!!

So my little girl is just turning 5 next month, and I went to help her pick out her school clothes yesterday, and she smelled SO bad!! I thought it was me, as it was a very grown up BO smell. I put her in the bath and had to wash her arm pits 2x! Then again today she has it again. She isn't even 5 yet! ( OK, in 3 weeks).

She IS very tall for her age, 49" and 60lbs. She's actually not chubby at all, a very dense, weight. She has had breast buds since she was a newborn, and the Doctor said that it was normal and they'd stay until she went through puberty, but wouldn't affect her going into precocious puberty. Has anyone else experienced this with their girls? Her annual Doctor appt. isn't until November, so I have to wait to ask him. Because of her height/weight, I am a little anxious about precocious puberty, but this is REALLY early!

Let me know what you know...Thanks!

What can I do next?

You might want to use an antibacterial soap like Dial.. our BO comes from bacteria. If you dilute a little bit of bleach in some water and swipe it under her arms with a cloth this may help as well. Since she's only 5 and probably doing her own bath these days, she may just not being doing the greatest job at washing herself. Make sure to use a wash cloth, lathered up and lightly scrubbing herself. Also buy her some powder that comes with a puff and have her powder herself before getting dressed.
5yrs old is pretty young for hormones to be kicking in.... but I've see a lot more of that lately, I think the human species is evolving somewhat and we are all noticing it in small doses.

A friend of mine ran in to this with her young daughter. After persistent bathing she couldn't gey rid of it. Turned out to be a food allergy to bananas which the child ate constantly! Once the bananas were gone there were no further b.o. Issues. This was found through allergy testing. Sounds like something you should talk to her Dr. About it. Good luck!

I recently noticed my 8 year old daughter had b.o., too. I was upset because I knew that meant something wasn't right. Kids her age shouldn't be dealing with that, yet. ( in my opinion, anyway:) I do know from our 4th grade teacher, that many boys in her class have it and so much so that she started telling them they needed to start wearing deoderant. It's a warm room with 75% of the class...boys. I don't blame her. LOL! Anyway, I started doing some research and found that certain foods can cause more of a potent odor. I began cutting back on the macNcheese - she loves it and wants to eat it everyday. We had also started to slack more in the sugar department. Baseball games, concession stands, summer snacks....it started to get out of hand. After I did a few of these things, I didn't notice an odor anymore. It also could have just been the foods she was eating the last couple of days. Pay attention to her diet, to see if there's anything you notice. I read that sugars and processed foods can cause more of of the bacteria that causes B.O. There are also more items listed, but those two are the ones I remember and cut back on. Google body odor in young children or 5 year old to see what else is mentioned. Good luck.

Stop eating animal products with the Bovine Growth Hormone - which is present in a lot of milk and beef products. This is raising havoc with a lot of childrens' immune systems. I now only buy natural beef, and milk without this. I also avoid ALL genetically modified foods - especially corn and soy. They also raise havoc with the immune system and have all kinds of strange effects on the body. Scientists in the know are now STAY AWAY FROM GMO!

Medical doctors are clueless about this stuff.

Also, check out this link about Soy and what it can do to the body as well:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/0...

Anti-bacterial soaps should ALWAYS be avoided. Our bodies have good and bad bacteria. If you are always killing the bacteria - it's killing the good even more than the bad. This will set up the body to be prone to yeast infections. Add an antibiotic in the mix, and you could have some severe immune system problems as well down the road.

Arm & Hammer "Essentials" Natural Deodorant.

This is what my 7year old daughter uses. And has used since 6 years old. It is safe. No aluminum in it etc.

Next, you may want to see a Pediatric Endocrinologist? To check for precocious puberty. They do what is called an x-ray of the hand.... to evaluate what is called "bone-age."
THIS is the way it is evaluated....
My daughter had that done... because when she was younger, she had breast buds. Per her bone-age x-ray though... she is fine though.
BUT, it has to be done and evaluated by a PEDIATRIC Endocrinologist. A regular Doctor/technician, CANNOT evaluate the x-ray properly.
For my daughter, well her breast buds disappeared, in less than a week.

All the best,
Susan

I'm not sure if this might relate to your daughter, but my 1 1/2 year old son will have some oder when he sweats at night. And he seems to sweat VERY easily, so we've kept a fan going in his bedroom when he sleeps even as the weather has cooled off. Good luck!

What kind of food do you eat? Are you buying chickens full of hormones and milk full of hormones.
You need to eat hormone free food...organically grown. That will change your child's advanced development and B.O.
In our family some of my cousins had their periods at 8 years of age. I was ten. But, because I used ONLY organically grown foods my daughters were twelve years old at menarche. It gave them a real childhood which made me very happy.

Please DO NOT use antibacterial soaps/sanitizers with Triclosan in them. Cancer causing possibilities! BING it. Also, bleach is brutal for a body! The fumes are extremely toxic, let alone placing it on our bodies, especially a five yo! My 10 yo girl has gone from some BO to no BO by changing a few basics. She's a competitive dancer so sweat is always an issue.

Mom 4S is on the right track! BO is a digestive issue. The food we eat is not getting through us OK. Meats of any kind are tough, sugars, processed anything, PLEASE STOP USING A MICROWAVE it kills everything in its path, even one use! Switch to good, clean, purified water and use lots of it: Half our body weight in ounces, so 30 ozs/day for your 60#er!

And PLEASE don't use the deodorants out there that contain all of the chemicals, especially the ammonium ones (which are darn near all of them in the stores!!!) This goes for kids and adults!! Also eliminate all of the nasty soaps/shampoos/products that contain SLS, and the bad list is endless. Even 'natural' and 'organic' products fall prey to the destructive ingredients.

We have some very safe, fun, and helpful products if you like. Sorry to sound so bossy and harsh. It's a big deal around our house, it's like "enough already"! Have a great day!

She is young. Talk with her Doc and rule out allergies and imbalances before masking the problem with deodorant. If all the test come out clean, than find a brand of deodorant that you like that works for her, but with her young age I would definitely talk with her doc. (I would avoid bleach and anti-bacterial soaps, those things should not even be used regularly on our hands let alone closer to the cores of our bodies!)

My 8 year old is a little bigger than your 5 year old & she get BO too. I have decided to have her use a very safe deodorant Tom's of Main, It seems to work. They are never to young to learn about good personal hygiene. Diet could also be the problem.

On another note I would never use bleach on a person's body. I try to avoid all chemicals altogether. Our bodies absorb chemicals & it generally has a cumulative negative affect on us.

Hi J.,
You must be so worried about your daughter. I know I would be!
I know that a lot of common foods and chemicals can mimic estrogen in our bodies. Is it possible that something in her environment is contributing? Here's an article I found that discusses precocious puberty and some possible causes: http://www.alive.com/1958a5a2.php?subject_bread_cramb=153
Good luck and maybe push up that dr. appt. to get her seen a little sooner...

If you have any questions for your doctor, you can call him. Never feel you have to wait. That is what doctors are there for. If he doesn't have time to answer your questions over the phone, get a different doctor.

I don't know if one thing leads to another when it comes to precocious puberty but my oldest daughter started getting B.O. when she was about 5 and by the time she was 6 1/2 she was starting to develop pubic hair. The doctor told me that was the beginning of precocious puberty and that she could start her menses as early as 3rd grade. Thankfully she was 10 when she did start but I had been preparing her for it for years.

I got my daughter some baby powder deodorant at that age so that she wouldn't get teased in school. Like your daughter mine wasn't chubby but a very tall and solid girl. (She is now 5'9.5" and a freshman in high school).

On the other hand my younger daughter didn't start getting B.O. till she was 9 and she started her menses when she was 10 as well. So I am not sure that one leads to the other necessarily.

Hi J.--My daughter is 5 and has the exact same problem...I had her checked out and everything was normal. I read a lot on the internet and it suggested using some sort of stridex pads (like the ones for acne) on her pits every morning and it has done wonders!! Try it.

my little girl had bad bo a few years back, about 7 maybe... (she just turned ten). She didn't have any signs of starting to develop yet either so I was completely freaked out as well. I took her in to see the pediatrician and he said "no, she's not starting puberty - just needs to use SOAP!". I love to share this story, one of my most embarassing mom moments :)
She had just started taking showers and washing herself without my supervision, so had clearly neglected to wash critical areas...! good to know ;)

I am having this same problem with my daughter, and I decided to nix cheese from our diet, we shall see what happens.
BUT It is SOOO important to not give her a bad body image, don't ever tell her she stinks of BO, and try not to freak out in front of her. When my lil angel first started having stinky pits I was so scared, and a friend of mine cheked me, to calm down and never give her negative or worrying feelings about her body, she is right.
Our daughters need all the help they can get with body image in todays world

My newborn son had a BO problem. I took tea bags and boiled them like you would for tea and bathed him in the tea water after it cooled of course!! I placed the tea bags on his feet and left them there during his bath and it helped bunches. I had to do this until he was about 6 months or so, then we just didn't have the problem any more. Hope this helps.
