My 5 Year Old Had Cavities Filled and One of Them Is Bothering Him

I went to a new pediatric dentist for my son's dental exam. I had received a recommendation for him. He found several cavities and we returned to a following appointment to have them filled. The dentist said he should not have any pain and no pain medication should be required. That evening, I had to give him acetametophin. I called the dentist the following day and he had us come in. He worked on the filling some more and told me that it had "sharp points". He said no acetametophin should be needed. Shortly after leaving the dentist office, my son complained about pain in that tooth.

My son is 5 and I feel I've seen some improvement in how he reacts to eating on that side, etc. He says it still bothers him some. And he can't drink cold water anymore. He never had this problem prior to this.

My husband had cavities as a child and swears that this is normal.

Can anyone out there tell me if their child has been through this? Is this normal? Or should I seek the advice of another dentist? Thanks for your help. It's been so tough to deal with this. I feel so much guilt for him having cavities and then to see him have to continue to suffer through appointments and pain - I need to find a solution.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have a 2nd opinion appointment scheduled with another highly recommended dentist. I have left a message with my son's dentist who did the faulty work but I have not received a call back. Their answering machine did not say they were out of the office. Additionally, one of his fillings fell out of his mouth. The dentist who did this work was Dr. Bassel Dulli. I am extremely disappointed with Dr. Dulli's dental work and his attitude. It's been a nightmare.

If you feel that your son is in pain, and the dentist office is not responding to your calls or concerns, you definately need to find a new dentist for your son and take him in for a second opinion. If you feel the dentist is being neglegent and actually harming your son, I would consider taking legal action.

If the cavity was deep then yes, some sensitivity can be normal. It may wear off after a while. Some dentists will put in an "insulator" between the tooth and the filling if the cavity was deep, this usually cost extra and may not be covered by insurance. It also may be the case that this "feels weird" to you son, he may need time to adjust to it.
If it persists I would recommend taking him to see Dr. Janda.

Janda, James M DDS - Prairie Point Dental Inc

He has two offices, one in Naperville and one in Aurora. He is increbibly gentle and we all love him. As an ex-dental assistant I can also tell you that he is an awesome dentist. It never hurts to get a second opinion. =)

I was an endodontal assistant for many years. WE dealt primarily with root canals, but I can see the same trend that we had. AFter working on a tooth, the tooth can build up pressure. Especially if the cavity was not completely treated, or is mid-way through a process (happens in root canal when tooth has not been completely cleaned out - usually in 1st or 2nd stage). A tooth can be tender and sensitive, even if no meds are needed during cavity, but if its actually painful, PLEASE call.
