Ok my 5 year old son has had a fever on and off for about 4 days now. I give him tyneol or mortin and it breaks and then comes right back. I give him cool baths to help try and break them too. And I also noticed that he has really bad breath what could this be? I know he has 2 back molars coming in.

What can I do next?

Watch for pneumonia...my son had a recurring fever and when diagnosed, my ped said the fever was an indication. He had just gotten over a cold, but seemed to be recovering nicely. I agree with another poste...back off the meds unless he's really uncomfortable. Let the body do it's job...unless of course it gets dangerously high. Let him get rest, lots of fluids. I also agree, the infection could be causing the bad breath. Does anything hurt?

You just answered your own question. Babies often run fevers when they are getting new teeth. Just keep him cool, he will be fine

Maybe a sinus infection. Are his eyes puffy? Does he look sick?

My daughter always had really bad breath. It turned out to be her tonsils. Google "cryptic tonsils" and "tonsil stones" and you can lean all about it.

We just went through this over Thanksgiving. My daughter started out with a horrible headache, It was so bad that we took her to the ER. They found nothing wrong. Next day high fever that wound only go away with Motrin. Got up to 104. Finally took her to the after hours clinic (holiday weekend ) THe doctor said she had a throat infection, She never once complained of a sore throat. He gave us antibiotic and the next day she was fine. She had horrible breath throughout the whole ordeal. That should have been my first clue.

Im not sure but I read that you've given him cold baths to bring the fever down and I just wanted to let you know that my daughter had a feveral (sp?) Sezuire from that when she was 21/2. They don't actually recommend that anymore...if you give him one then maybe a luke warm bath. You're his mom though and we have that motherly intuition so im sure you'll do what you think is best. I hope he feels better soon! :)

A fever is the result of the body trying to fight off an infection. Only give medicine for this if your child is uncomfortable or the fever is extremely high. Tylenol isn't curing the problem, just reducing the fever temporarily - so yes, it comes back when the meds wear off. Cool baths are fine, and don't overdress him if he's hot.

The bad breath could be from some infection back in the throat, or from extra post-nasal drip going down the back of his throat. Could indicate a sinus infection, which could also cause the fever. One way to check (not foolproof) is to press on his sinuses (cheekbones below the eyes, or just above the eyebrows) and see if it really bothers him. If this persists, you might want to have him seen. I'm not a big fan of medications if they aren't necessary, but if a sinus infection or bronchial infection takes root and sits there, it can be tough to get rid of.
