I was told at my sons 6 month check up that his soft spot on the top of his head is closing to quickly. The doctor wants him to get a skull x-ray and to possibly see the nuerosurgeon. Has anyone had this similar problem and if so what was the outcome. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I got the X-rays done and my doctor said everything is fine. My son having been a twin most likely was squished and this caused his head to be more flat in the back and form the way it did. His doctor said for me to keep my neurosurgeon appointment to talk about ways to help his head form better. Thanks for all you helped.

My best friends daughter had this at 6 months and while she had to get surgery hers was an extreme case. (the chances you wll have to have it is very very low) And it was a very routine surgery and she IS FINE. You just want to correct it asap. If you need the name of good neurosurgeons let me know. Where do you live?

My niece also had a similar problem. She had exrays done - she is fine!!! Don't be alarmed - some children's soft spots just close quickly. Good luck!

I went though the exact same thing with my daughter and I freaked out. Did all sorts of research on what they said was wrong with her. After all this we went to the specialist and it was nothing she was fine. Now she's three and other than a little bit of a cone shaped head she's perfectly fine.

I know very little about your situation, only to say that I have a friend that had a similar situation and could maybe help you out if you do not get any responses from our area(she is in Boston). Let me know and I can email her with your email at some point if you are interested.

There is so much that can be done these day. All the best to you and your family as you figure out what you need to do.

Hi T.,

My name is S.. It could be possible that your son has hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain that doesn't drain properly into the body). My son has spina bifida and mild hydrocephalus. He also has a VP Shunt. A shunt is a like a valve that is placed in the head allowing the excess of spinal fluid drain safely from his head into his abdomen where it is absorbed safely. 90% of children with spina bifida have hydrocephalus but there are children that have it but not spina bifida. Visiting a neurosurgeon is imperitive as he will be able to determine if it is hydro. A CT scan will determine this. One sign of hydrocephalus is the soft spot becoming harder and the head getting bigger. Try to see the neurosurgeon sooner than later. Please keep me updated. Good luck..

Well, I know a guy here at work whose granddaughter was born with her skull completely fused, and no soft spot. They gave her a surgery to open her skull so her brain could have room to grow properly.
She had no complications and is %100 healthy and happy.
Her before and after pictures even look different, as far as the shape of her head being a little abnormal before, and perfectly fine now.
So there is a sucess story for you. Maybe it is not as uncommon as it seems. Of course I am sure her family went through alot of fear and heartbreak before and during her procedures. Hopefully you can find some support to help assure you.
First, of course make sure you gain the opinion of at least 2 specialist. I wouldn't jump right in after one opinion with such a serious issue.
Good luck, God bless!

Hi T.
My son had this also it is called cranialsynotosis the sutures are closing too soon and the brain does not have enough room to grow. he was 10 weeks old when he had his surgery. he is perfect now he will be 3 next month . If this is the same with your son most likley the surgery will be the next step. It will be hard seeing him like that after the surgery because there is swelling of the face and eyes afterwards because of the trauma to the head they have to open it to remove the sutures so the head can grow normally . If you find out this is your outcome you can talk to me for support since I know what you are going through. Don't worry eveything will be fine :-) D. R.
