My 7 Month Old Son Just Fell Out of His Crib!!!!

I am beside myself right now. I was sleeping on the floor in my son's room last night because I believe he ha caught my cold. The poor thing was waking up every couple hours which is very rare for him. He always sleeps through the night. All of a sudden I hear a loud thump and he starts screaming! He had fallen out of his crib. I quickly picked him up and looked him over to make sure he was ok and he quickly fell back to sleep in my arms. I thank god he was not hurt but am going to take him to the er today just to make sure. I told my husband who just rolled over and fell back to sleep. How does this happen? I'm not sure on the model of the crib right now, but it was brand new that my mother in law bought for us. It meets all safety standards, and is positioned as far down as it can go. I did not even think he could touch the top of the crib. There is nothing in the crib for him to stand or climb on either. He is safe and sound in my lap now. Do not want to put him back in there. I thank my lucky stars he was ok. Any thoughts or suggestions on any of this?
Thanks,
Concerned Mommy

So What Happened?

Wow there are some very judgmental people out there. First off, I'm not an idiot. I know how to read directions and properly use a crib. The crib mattress IS at the lowest setting. I believe he has a cold and was waking up all night so instead of getting in and out of my bed all night I slept on his floor to make it easier on myself. He was Definitely in his crib, NOT sleeping on me. After asking my husband this morning, he apparently did not even hear me when I told him our son had fallen. My son sits on his own and has been crawling since 5 months old. He pulls himself on many things but I have never seen him do it in his crib before. I also have other safety precautions in place. I do not appreciate being called a liar or being accused of not telling the whole story. Shame on you all. I am an amazing mother and have been taking care of children for over 10years. I have never seen this happen before and was a little shocked and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions, NOT have my character called into question. Also, it is not the type of crib that has locks or side rails that can be lowered!!! They are solid pieces that can not be moved. Not sure how he could have fallen off of ME when I was on the floor. Not in a chair couch or bed. He has been sleeping in this crib since we brought him home from the hospital with no issues. Its sturdy with no holes or spaces for him to fall through. And I never said he landed right next to me. I was asleep on the floor on the other side of the room while he was on floor next o his crib!!!

wow. I am pretty amazed at how ignorant some of the responses were. My mom said I was jumping out of my crib a 7 1/2 months but luckily my girls didn't. Some babies are just amazingly strong and agile. Get a crib tent or baby proof the room like crazy and convert to a toddler bed. There is no reason to feel bad. These things happen.

One of mine climbed up and fell out of her crib at 8 mos. It does happen. I put her back in and watched and she did it again. I caught her the 2nd time and put the crib away and had her sleep on the mattress on the floor. It does make it hard because you do need to completely baby proof everything, but some are just little monkey's.

This is the first of many surprises throughout their lifetimes. In order to prevent that from happening I put a mattress outside the bed for my first child. Nothing ever happened he was just fine. Second child I got too confident and wham right in the middle of his first birthday party after the cake and a lot of screaming I put him to bed. Floor mattress had long gone the way of the garbage. Bam! I swear the house shook that day when he decided to have none of that and fell out of bed. We mothers are worry warts. Short of caging them until twenty five just hang in there. Then there was the time when my little one fell off a couch (had decided to let him sleep and put myself next to him on the floor)He fell onto my head. OUCH. Jaw has never been the same. Thoughts or suggestions? Sadly no, but hope you liked my brief stories.

I am not sure about these answers that you got. I didn't read the all but geez. Anyways, my oldest son did stand unassisted by 7 months and walked by 8 months so I think that it is totally possible that he pulled himself up over the side of the crib.

Okay, well first of all, he's crying. That's a good sign.
Secondly, yeah, I'd not put him back into the crib.
Third, check his eyes and see if his pupils are dilated. Check them a half hour after that. Then an hour.
Fourth, check to see if any of his limbs are hurt. Red, swelling, etc.
Then call your Pedi's office and ask what they'd suggest.

Hope he's okay. I bet he's going to be fine.

Looks like you have a climber on your hands. He's really too young to not be in the crib. Go and get a crib tent from Babies R Us.

Sorry - this story doesn't add up to me.

Why would you be sleeping on the floor?
Why would your husband - supposedly sleeping in another room - just turn over and go back to sleep?
I've not seen a 7 month old be able to stand up on his own...MAYBE pull up - which goes to my option one theory on what happened...

here's what I believe happened....

Option 1 - I think the side was NOT up all the way or in the locked position and when your son woke up - he pulled on it and it fell down and he fell out.

Option 2 - you were concerned about your son - stayed in his room - had him sleeping on your chest and when you fell into a deep sleep, he fell out of your lap.

When you put him in bed tonight? Make sure the side is all the way up and in the LOCKED position....this means you need to push on it yourself.

If you are going to sleep with him in your arms - use a boppy pillow or have him sleep in bed with you (an option I really don't encourage).

Good luck!

I don't see how a 7 month old could possibly climb out of the crib. Was the side up? Are you sure he was in there to begin with?

Also - he fell out of the crib. It happens to everyone - that's how you know when it's time for a toddler bed. If he's acting fine, there is no reason to bring him to the ER and waste the time, money, and resources.

After they walk they can pull up and climb but it's unusual for them to do that at 7 months old.
You can put the crib mattress on the floor and he can sleep there.
He can't fall if he's already as low as he can go.

Our son climbed out of his crib at around 15 months (he didn't walk till 14 months but he was crawling early).
He fell the first time but after that he could climb in and out at will.
He's always viewed a fall as a kind of challenge - he picks himself up and tries again.
For a few years he had so many bumps and bruises I was worried people might think he was being abused but he's always been a rough and tumble kid and laughs while doing it.

It happens, some infants really are super strong and agile. Our daughter could walk at 6 months unassisted. I am not kidding.. apparently so was my husband as an infant.

It was not long after she could climb over her crib.. It was amazing her upper body strength.. You may want to try a crib tent. We had one and it worked for a while.. then she figured out how to wrangle it open.. So right before she was a year old, we took apart the crib and she slept on the mattress on the floor and a gate in her door way. A few months later 2 gates stacked on top of each other.

I haven't read other responses but.....I think this happens to 90% of us! Don't worry he will be ok. I ended up having to move my 9 month old to a toddler bed because he started trying to get out on
Purpose. He is now 17 and just fine. You are a great mother I am sure. Things happen and we just learn and move forward as the best parent s we can be. Good luck to you and never doubt yourself! Thisi will always be a learning experience.

They make a mesh crib tent that zips on the outside, we got ours at target. This will solve the issue. Good luck

My kids could not even sit up until 8-9 months.
I don't see how a 7-month-old fell out of a crib. I can't fathom that.
Does he sit up, crawl and is he mobile? Maybe...but wow, that's amazing and scary.

I'm not going to read the other responses (mainly based on your SWH saying people are judgmental; it'll probably piss me off). Give yourself a break, mama!!! It happens, especially in today's society where it's more common for a baby to have his/her own bed/crib in his/her own room. Bed-sharing isn't as common, but oh man can it be a life-saver when baby is sick or teething!!! My recommendation would be to snuggle down with him for a few nights and nurse a lot (if you still breastfeed).

IT HAPPENS, and it could have been worse. You could have been in your own room, comfy and dead asleep in your own bed. Maybe you wouldn't have heard the thump, and even worse, maybe you wouldn't have heard the cry. Instead, you were foregoing your own comfort and sleep needs to sleep close to your son. Therefore, you were closer to him when the incident happened and were able to get to him quickly.

The fact that he fell right back to sleep tells me (a mom x2, going on 3) that he's fine and an ER visit might make you feel better, but probably isn't needed. However, you need to trust your OWN instincts regarding that one :)

All that, his crib still is the safest place he can be if he's not in bed with you and your husband. When he starts feeling better, he'll probably start sleeping better, and you won't feel as concerned that he'll get hurt. Keep in mind, however, that some babies climb out of their cribs a lot earlier than others, and sometimes, there's nothing in the crib to use for a boost. My first never even considered climbing out, but my 2nd learned to climb out around 18mo. She didn't do it often, mainly because I usually got to her when she first started fussing instead of leaving her in there to fully waken :)

We even tried the toddler bed around age 2 1/2, but she refused to stay in her bed. In the end, she was in her crib until age 3 1/2 when we finally put her in a twin bed. If anyone suggested a toddler bed, 7mo is WAY too young in my opinion....

Time to put the mattress all the way down on the lowest level and if you're not already doing this, keep the sides of the crib raised and locked at all times.

Chiz like this doesn't just happen. He's too little to pull himself over the side of a crib. There are some inconsistencies in the events as you told them, but if it really did happen it may be time to figure out if you're using it properly or get a new crib.

Is he standing and pulling up on the side? I mean, does he try to lift his feet and get leverage over the side? If so he needs something else. If not then I'd put as much pressure as possible on each and every joint and connection area of that crib. He had to get out somehow. I think I'd put a camera on a shelf in his room too so that I could look back and see when he's in it to see what he does when you're not in there.

It doesn't sound like he was in his crib at all. You sure you didn't fall asleep with him on your chest and he rolled off?

I had one strange kid that actually walked at 7 months, even he couldn't pull himself out of his crib until he was a year. There is just no way your son got out of that crib and fell next to you. If he were under the crib I would say you didn't put it together correctly but next to you, he wasn't in the crib.

That is pretty young, but it is concerning. A few options... Crib tent, but when he is even more mobile, it might not be safe. I think they were recalled a few years ago for strangulation hazards, but they may have improved the design. Toddler bed if you feel the crib tent isn't safe, but be sure room is super baby proof. Is it possible, as another poster said, he was on you and you were groggy and don't remember? Try watching him while he's awake to see what kind of tricks he's up to. When my son was in my bed, I put exercise mats around it in case he rolled out, which he did once. I bought them on amazon. Thick ones, not just yoga mats.

The only thing I can think of is that he was able to pull himself up and over somehow. From everything you saidd about the crib itself, it doesn't sound like there is any way he could have just fallen out of it. He had to have climbed. Is there a bumper? He could have stood on that (I know you said there isn't anything to stand on, but some people don't realize you can stand on bumpers because they seem so soft and squishy) and then climbed out.

I think you need to see if he can reach the top of the railing when standing. If he can, he may have been able to pull himself up and over.

Well, it sounds like you have a climber. He is too young to put in a toddler bed, so I would go out today and buy a crib tent to prevent this from happening again. When they find out they can climb out once, they usually keep it up.

For right now with his cold, I would strap him into his carseat and put it in the crib for him to sleep upright. He'll breathe better and you won't have to sleep on the floor. Use saline spray to squirt in his nostrils and an ear syringe (not a nose syringe - they're too little to work well) to suction out the snot. This will help too. Keep a close watch on his temp - sometimes colds turn into ear infections and the doctor will have to help you with that.

These are my suggestions having had babies with colds. I never had a climber that early, but you do have to prevent that so that he doesn't get hurt. I do think the ER visit may be an overreaction - if you take the baby to the ER everytime he falls, you're going to end up there all the time...
