My Almost 5 Month Old and the Pacifier - ARGH!

The past few night my almost 5 month old has been waking every 1-2 hours. I've been feeding her thinking it was a growth spurt but tonight she has already woken up 3 times - for the pacifier! I don't want to be running in there to keep popping the paci in so what do I do? I don't think she would understand if I put 10 of them in there for her to find them. I'd rather get rid of the paci all together but how do I do it? Mama needs some ZZZZZ's!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks every one. We've started weaning her off the pacifier. We decided the few days of h*&& are worth it in the end and she was already beginning to suck her thumb. So far she is doing okay and back to waking up just twice a night. She woke at 5 am today and I let her fuss/coo for a few minutes and when I realized she had been quiet for some time I went to check on her and her thumb was falling out of her mouth so I think it's working! With my son we went cold turkey at some point and he is a finger sucker today. I addressed this with his dentist who said she prefers that kids be thumb/finger suckers as pacifiers cause the most damage because of how hard a child is able to suck on the pacifier as opposed to his fingers so we're going to go with letting her suck her fingers if she needs to suck.

Honstely my daughter did the exact same thing and I couldn't take it so I took the pacifier away from her and she found her thumb and I was a happier...less psychotic mother. This being said the thumb is definitely harder to take away and though she is now 5...I rare ever see it in her mouth anymore and it would only be at night.

With my son...he did the same thing and this time I decided to let him have the pacifier and I felt psychotic for 9 months...he is now 1 yr. old and I plan on taking the pacifier away this weekend. We'll see how that goes...he still throws that thing out of the crib knowing I'll come back, give it to him and lay him back down. It drives me nuts but it's about to end. It helps to have it attached to their clothing too by the way. He can find it himself and as long as he can't get it off his shirt...he can't throw it out the crib!

I wish you the best of luck...I know how it feels and I cannot handle constantly being woken up because of that...that...THING! :o)

I totally disagree with the thumb thing. Thumb sucking is MUCH harder to break than pacifier.

My advice.....just do it. I know it sucks, but like most things that kids do, it will pass. Everything with my kids (that drove me nuts) only lasted a week or two,.......
maybe you shoukd mover her into your room.

Taking away the pacifier may be a bigger battle than you want to fight right now.

my daughter learned to put her bink back in around 9 months old, but its never really been a problem as she has always been in our room, maybe let her fuss for a couple minutes and see if she can find it

I'm in the same exact boat as you so I'd like to see what responses you get.

I've even tried rocking my daughter to sleep and putting her sleep without her paci, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't as she just wakes up crying for her paci.

I had this problem when I took the bumpers out of my son's crib about a month or so ago & he started to lose it through the cracks. I just let him sleep now with it attached to him & no problems!

You can either take the paci away and deal with a few nights of screaming... in my daughter's case it would be like a month of screaming... or you can put a few pacifiers in the crib, that worked for us.

Teach her how to find her thumb.

That's all I got, my kids never took the pacifier (or thumbs), so hopefully you get better advice!

My sister offered me a nice soft toy for the baby shower. It's a purple octopus with 4 or 5 "legs" with plastic "feet" (teething soft textured plastic). It has a kind of tail with velcro to attach a pacifier.
So, when my daughter looses her pacifier at night, she just need to find this toy and turn it until she gets to the paci.
I realize that, if I put several pacifiers in her crib, she will still cry and look for them. If she has this toy, she finds it immediately and from it the pacifier.

I wish I would have that when my son was a baby.
I tried to google it but all the images I found were from French website. I guess I didn't know the correct word for these toys in English because I'm sure they sell it here too. I hope the pictures will help you.

We had 5 binkies in the cribs when the kids were babies. They did find them and they did figure it out. If you keep finding it, she'll never have to.

Just remember, that this time seems like an eternity when you're living it and you're totally sleep deprived, but time flies. Pretty soon she'll be in kindergarten and then before you know it, she'll be off to college. I know this. I've been where you are.
Keep telling yourself that time is fleeting... You can sleep when she goes to school.

YMMV

same thing happened to my daughter. she used to get up at night bc her binky fell out, but it didn't last long. maybe a couple of weeks or so. i went in every time to put it back for her, bc that's her security. i heard that babies get their security from: binky, blanket, or thumb sucking. i like binky the best, since i can remove it and wash it when i falls. so i didn't want her to go thumb sucking. hope this helps!
