My 11 mth old spiked a fever of 102 night b4 last. He started coughing and throwing up staurday night. I took him to the ped yesterday and he said that he thought it was a viral infection but he had an awful lot of junk in his right lung so he put him on Zithromax to prevent it from getting worse. Well everytime I attempt to give him the antibiotic he throws up. He also does this sometimes when I give him tylenol or motrin. He's not eating baby food at all right now and has only taken prolly 15 oz of formula since Monday night. He's been drinking water and pedialyte and juice off and on but only about a half an ounce here and there. He hardly wants to suck on his bottle so I've been using his medicine dropper to try to get fluids in him which worked at first but now all he really wants to do is take it in his mouth then spit it right back out before he swallows any of it. I know if he don't start drinking and getting better he's gonna have to be put in the hospital. He's just so pitiful, all he's wanting to do is sleep or lay around which is completly not like him. Does anyone have any advice on how to get him to drink fluids or to make the medicine go down and stay down? I have called his dr about all of this I'm jsut waiting for them to return my phone call. Any advice would be appreciated.....

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the advice. I took him back to the pediatrician and they prescribed Omnicef and tylenol suppositories. He's acting like he's feeling a lil better but still isn't wanting to eat or drink much of anything and he still has the fever and nasty cough. We'll see if we can keep this medicine down.

When my kids start throwing up when I give them motrin or tylenol I get them a thing called Feverall - I have found it at Walmart and I think both CVS and Walgreens carries it but it is the same meds in tylenol but in a suppositry so it goes up their butt however it works and once their fever is down they start acting better - eating and drinking too - worth a shot!! Hope he feels better quick

Hello,
I just went through the exact same thing with my youngest son ( almost 3) I posted a request last Friday for advice! My son wouldn't eat or drink anything and we ended up taking him to the ER because we couldn't get his temp. to drop and he was very lethargic. The Dr. office told me it was viral as well and to let it run it's course but it can be very worrysome watching your sick baby not get any better! Anyway he ended up having the stomach flu,ear infections in both ears and he was dehydrated. I found that giving him some dry toast about 10 min. or so before I gave him medicine seem to help him keep it down. He would only take a couple of bites but he didn't throw up his medicine afterwards! Anyway the Dr. at the hospital told me to just keep a real close eye out for the signs of dehydration...dry craked lips no tears when he cried and of course the wet diaper count! Hope your guy is feeling better for his first Christmas!

My daughter had a similar viral infection a couple of weeks ago where all she wanted to do was sleep for like three days and she didn't even want to nurse either or drink fluids and was throwing up anything she had(juice, milk, Tylenol/Motrin.) But I am happy to say that after the three days of sleeping almost all day and night she got better. Her fever spiked a few times here and there through the course of the three days but it was like after the fever broke she was better. I hope that your little one starts to feel better very soon. Don't worry they make up for the not eating and drinking for three days. My daughter ate like 3 peices of toast and had two juice cups for breakfast after she felt better. Just hang in there, your baby will feel better soon.

If he's peeing and it's not 'strong', that's a good sign. I still believe in giving lukewarm baths for fever as long as they don't chill the child. If you seem desperate to get him to drink, he may see it as fearful or a game (that he can win, if he's really not feeling that badly). One of my boys couldn't take liquid medicine. He would gag and choke until he threw up, but he could take pills at a very young age (I found out by giving him some Shaklee natural herbs and vitamins. He swallowed several at once!)

I don't know if this will help.. hope so. I found this website: http://www.bulkherbstore.com. They sell herbs and share herbal remedies which are almost all safe for babies and adults (even women who are pregnant or nursing). There is a tab on their website for "Need a remedy?" and you can look up fever or upset stomach or whatever the illness may be. They will list the herb to use and you may be able to find it in your hometown or you can buy it on their website. I have a 10 month old and I just ordered some of their herbs to keep on hand whenever I may need them. I have not had many good results with over the counter medicine so I am going to try the herbs myself. I have heard many amazing stories of great results after using herbs. God bless you.

Have you ever tried the pedialyte freezer pops? Especially with the fever, your little guy might like the cold and flavor.
Good luck!

Try mixing the meds with the juice or formula. Make sure it's when he's hungry and will be taking the whole bottle/sippy. Good luck, I feel for you.

Dear A.
If the baby is still sick and can not swallow or will not try to swallow he may have something going on in his throat, you may want to get he back to the doctors and not wait for them to call you back.

It sounds like he is getting lethargic. I would definitely take him in right away.
