My daughter is 3 years old just a week in a half ago I noticed that her left tonsil was bigger then normal. I took her to see her Dr. no strep which was good news. But the right side started to big as well. I call the Dr. back the next day he put her on medicine but that has not helped. Now she has to go and see a ear, throat and nose dr. I 'am really worried because she also has some problems sleeping as well. She keeps me up at nights so I don't get enough sleep during the night. I have a 5 month old to get up to . I'am getting very tried with the lack of sleep. My husband works night turn so he can only help when he is off. Any advice on what I can do to help her and myself . Thank you for listening.

So What Happened?

My daughter had her surgery this passed Monday. All went well until we came home, she did not want to drink or take nothing for pain. But we always have that problem with her taking medicine. Well she didn't sleep to good which I know that was goeing to happen. Things just got a little bad she started to get a temp nothing was working. I called the Doctor and they admitted her in the hospital. It took her a day in a half to start to drink . When my mother in law brought her brother over to see her. she was happy until they left to go home she cried. She wanted to leave too. but to her surprise she could not do that until she was drinking something. Well it work she was drinking and now she is home and doing much better. Even with her sleeping.

My son who is now 9 years old had that same problem when he was 3 years old. I took him to our family doctor because he was having problems waking up through the night because he snored. I found out that his tonsils were so swollen he could hardly breathe. Our doctor told me that it was caused by allergies of some sort. She put him on Zithromax and had us go to a ENT to be evaluated for Tonsil and abnoids to be removed.

Ever since he had his tonsils and abnoids removed he has not had any problems with snoring or anything else.

This similar thing happened to my son. When he was 21/2 he got croup and thats when it was noticed that his lymph nodes in the bakc of his was larger than what they should have been. Although I am in the healthcare field, I was still unclear about what the doctor meant by that. We went to his ped. and she said that his tonsils were very large and they were just about touching eachother. so we went to the ENT doc. she gave a med that did nothing for the tonsils. we went back and tried another med that did absolutely nothing either. Then she decided to go on and remove his tonils and adnoids. That was probably the best that could have happened. The first night he had them removed that was the first time he slept a full 8 hours without getting up. It turns out that he had an underlined infection and thats why the medicin wasn't working. Her exact word were "his tonsils were mushy" and thats why. Its been wonderful every since.
Also although you have not seen the ENT doc yet, if they say its best to remove the tonsils I wouls. Its better to take care of it now. It is risks for complications as with any surgery, but its better to get it over with now than to let it go on any longer. Children tend to recover faster with this surgery than adults. Its a quick procedure about a hour and a half, and its done. Good luck hope this helps.

My son had his adenoids removed at 15 months because of snoring and a 98% blockage in his nose. It was a very minor surgery with a quick recovery. He also has enlarged tonsils. The doctor didn't want to take the tonsils at the time because it is a more extensive surgery and the recovery time is a bit longer. Make sure when you see the ENT that they stick a long tube with a light on the end up into the nose to check for the adenoid blockage. That is the only way they can see them. If there is swelling, they may prescribe a nasal spray to see if that shrinks them before they do surgery. Good luck.
