My daughter, Haley, is four years old and we had to take her to the hospital a couple days ago, the doctor says she hasd walking pneumonia. Well, her fever is gone, but she literally threw up for 3 hours straight last night, and couldn't stop coughing as well. I called her doctor and she said if she does the same tonight, then to take her back to hospital. The doctor only gave her some antibiotics, no cough medicine. My question is do any of you moms have any suggestions on how to help relieve her coughing at night? The doctor stated that I shouldn't give her any cough medicine because it's too hard on her stomach right now and could just make the situation worsen. It's so hard for me to watch my innocent little girl be this sick, she's my little angel and I can't take it anymore. Please, if you have any suggestions or anything that helped your child, please let me know. Thank you,
Desiree'

So What Happened?

I just wanted to let everyone know how Haley did last night. First of all, thank you to everyone for your responses, I learned alot of new wonderful remedies for my child. Last night Haley started her coughing spell and so I put some Vicks vapor rub on her feet real thick, then put socks on over it, and to my surprise- it actually worked. She still stayed up untill about 4:30am, I think mainly because her body's getting use to being up that late coughing. But thank God she didn't get sick not one time last night. So thank you very much!!!
Sincerely,
Desiree'

Ok, I'll start out by saying I was sceptical that this would work, but my son has had a cough for the last few days so I tried it and it worked. Take Vicks Vapor Rub and rub it on the bottom of her feet before bed and then put socks on her feet. It's very odd that this works but it does, at least on my son.

D.B, I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. My 5 year old son just got over pneumonia too. He wasn't coughing as bad as your little angel but his doctor suggested Mucinex. My mother-in-law has been a nurse for over 30 years and she swears by it. You would need something with DM to help supress the cough but Mucinex has an exprectorent that will make the coughes she does have be more productive. Other than that I would say prayer saved my son. I feel the same way you do about your daughter. I have been testing my faith and the more faith I have the more I see God's power. I will pray for her but you must too and believe that God is big enough to heal her.

Do NOT use a humidifier, you don't put more water in the air when someone's lungs are already full of fluid. If anything, use a dehumidifier.
She needs to cough up the stuff but not to the point she's making herself sick. Did you ask the doctor about an expectorant like Mucinex? It will make it easier for her to cough. The more she coughs up, the faster she'll be well.
I know my grandma used onion packs for coughs. She would fry onions and wrap them in a towel when they were cool enough to touch but still warm, she'd put it on our chests. It works but it sure does smell bad. It works especially well on mild cases of pneumonia.
You can also make a virgin hot toddy. 2 tablespoons of hot water, (or you can make some green or black tea and add the rest of the ingredients) 3 tablespoons of honey (never give a child under 2 honey for other mom's the want to try this) and 1 1/2 teaspoons of lemon juice. Fresh only. Drink as often as possible. If you make it in a tea, the steam will get her to cough more but it'll be a productive cough while still making it much easier to get all that junk out of her lungs and coat her throat so it doesn't hurt so much. For adults, add whiskey for sore throats and Peppermint Schnapps for coughs.
Give her a cough pillow too. My dad had double pneumonia and he pulled his stomach muscles coughing. The nurse gave him a pillow that was very soft to hug when he coughed. Kids are smarter then adults, they tend to hug their stuffed animals when they cough anyway. Just make sure it's one about the size of her chest.
I had Pneumonia when I was pregnant with my last child and the only medicines I could take was Tylenol and Robitussin. The old wives remedies really came in handy and worked much better then anything the doctor could have given me.
It's a lot harder on us mom's then it is the sick kids. We worry, fuss and fret and run ourselves ragged. I hope she gets better soon.

Desiree,

I have heard of the Vics on the bottom of the feet before. It can't hurt to try it. Please let us know if it works. The other lady that answered you has given me hope that it will work as my Beth coughs at night sometimes. In the meantime, try giving her constant sips of lukewarm water and keep her in a room with a humidifier. Also keep her upright. If you have a chair in the room, let her sleep in your arms until the cough subsides. An upright postion doesn't allow the fluids to collect in one spot.

Good luck and I hope your little one feels better soon.

Someone one told me over the summer if you put vicks baby rub on there feet and put a pair of socks on within 5 mins the coughing will stop. I have not tried it yet cause my son hasn't got that sick yet this season {which I am greatful for}. It is worth I shot I think. I hope your baby gets to feeling better. I can't stand it when they are sick!!!!

I recently read some old time rememdies, haven't had the opportunity to try this one yet but it's worth a try. It says to calm a cough at night, generously apply Vicks Vapor rub to the feet and cover with socks.

Coughing is good to a point. It helps clear the lungs. When it becomes a problem though, you should try to give her something warm to drink. Try instant hot chocolate. It won't be so hard on her stomach because you can mix it with water. Even some warm chicken broth might be better, whatever she likes. Warm drinks help soothe the airway and will help with coughing. Make sure you do take her to the hospital though if she has another coughing spell. Coughing very hard for a long time is very hard on a small body. You could also try giving her a cough drop. You can get childrens that have a stick so its like a sucker. I hope this helps.

This is going to sound wierd but a doctor told me one time to mix 1 teaspoon whiskey, 1 teaspoon lemone juice, 1 teaspoon honey and it wouldn't hurt and would cut the cough and make them sleep. I have done that. I go to the liquor store and get one of those little bitty bottles and keep it in my cabinet. In my opinion, it works better than cough medicine. If you are absolutely against the whiskey then mix some lemon juice and honey and see if that works.

My daughter had a g-tube and couldn't take cough medicine at times because it would make her sick. An herbalist gave me the following directions and it would work. Although, I had to let the tea cool to get her to drink it.

Make hot lemon tea (Bigalow has a Lemon Zest tea that I used), to a cup add the juice of 1/4 fresh lemon and about 2 teaspoons of honey.

That's it! It doesn't put them out like cold medicine, but it helps calm the coughing. Hope this helps!

My 8 year old had it a few weeks ago. The medicine that they gave him one of the side effects is vomiting and upset stomach. His doctor also gave him something for the vomiting. As for the cough the doctor told me its best to let them cough because it helps to clear out the infection, so i didn't give him anything during the day but at night I gave him triaminic (not sure on the spelling) thin strips it was alot easier on him stomach than any syrup

SO glad to read the Vick's worked! I'll tuck that one in my bag of tricks. One thing no one has mentioned is propping her up on a couple of pillows to keep her head elevated - it makes it easier to breathe. I had pneumonia a couple of times and I remember that making it easier.

I know it is not easy watching our little ones suffer through illnesses. You may want to try rubbing some vapor rub on her chest or giving her something to drink at night like water or Sprite that you have warmed up in the microwave (it takes the fizz out so it won't upset her stomach). I think another reason the doctor doesn't want her to have cough medicine is due to the fact that she needs to cough the infection out of her lungs. Usually they put patients on nebulizer or breathing treatments to help them breathe easier which sometimes helps the coughing. I am not sure if there are any over the counter remedies other than cough meds, but you may want to call your local pharmacy and ask them. A vaporizer may help. I am not sure which would be best, a cool mist or warm mist. I know that pediatricians do prefer one over the other. They are relatively cheap and your local pharmacy should have them and be able to tell you which one would work best. I hope Haley gets well soon.

I got this off one of my blogs on myspace and several of the members of my blog group tried it and said it worked.

To stop night time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like acupressure.

Just happened to tune in A.M.Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs so,I listened. It was a surprise finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly. Polly tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, (incredibly annoying!) every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours every night that she used it. If you have grandchildren, pass it on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect.

Let me know how it works for you!!

My 2year was in the hospital for two days about 2 weeks ago with Atypical pneumonia (walking pneumonia). His Dr. administered steriods and antibiotica through an IV for 2days to boost his lungs, because his oxygen levels were below 90 when sleeping. He is now at home, but still sick even weeks later. We have to give antibiotics twice daily, in addition to breathing treatments for the coughing. Maybe ask about the treatments b/c they seem to help once he got use to them.
