My Daughter Is Sick and She Has Her Kindergarten...

...moving up ceremony tomorrow. She went to the nurse and the nurse said she had a little fever (kids have to be losing a limb for the nurse to call in her school). Last night she was coughing, and now she has a cough and a sore throat. I can tell it's hurting by the way she's talking. She just got off the bus looking sickly and the other kids told me she was falling asleep on the bus. She caught it from my husband who is just getting over it. I didn't catch it, and my son is a mutant that never gets sick.

If she has a fever tomorrow, I'm obviously going to keep her home. But if she doesn't have one I'm wondering if I send her since she has her ceremony going on. I don't want her to miss it, but I don't want her to be miserable at school either. This has always been a tricky decision for me to make.

What would you do?

Erm, yes, she went to school. She had a cough, but did not look or act sick. Most often, sickness is progressive and this got progressively worse throughout the day. Ever go to work with a little tickle in your throat then come home feeling like you were hit by a truck? I also did not know she had a fever until she told me. The nurse did not call or otherwise make me aware that she was even sick.

What can I do next?

Is there any way you can bring her just for the ceremony and then go back home? Maybe call the teacher and find out what time they are doing the ceremony and explain the situation. Poor baby, hope she feels better soon!

Unless she pops out of bed tomorrow feeling like a million bucks, I'd keep her home. I have this death-flu that's going around right now (same symptoms your daughter has), and I have felt like absolute hell for the past week. To the point that I've actually stayed in bed all day for several days running - which is something I've never done before, ever in my life! If you can spare other families this viral plague, please do. Keep her home so she can rest and get better. In 20 years, she will not remember that she wasn't at her Kindergarten graduation. Heck, she probably won't remember it in 5 years.

I understand your concern over your daughter missing the ceremony, but agree 110% with S.H.

I'm not being insensitive here at all, i know how you feel. My grandson in 8th grade woke up yesterday morning with a swollen face, fever and rash, he obviously had to miss out on yesterday's 8th grade class trip to Knott's Berry Farm. He then went to the doctor and was diagnosed with impetigo, highly contagious and slow healing, so he had to miss out on his 8th grade graduation ceremony this morning. (The doctor said he apparently caught it from an insect bite on his class trip to Washington DC last week.)

This is from the school he has attending since mid-first grade, so you can imagine how upset he was about that. But, he is a trooper and is playing his guitar and is letting the disappointment roll off his back. We are going to have to give him a stellar graduation party once he is healed, but, hey, such is life, you take the good with the bad and make the best out of it, ya know?

Hope your daughter feels better soon!

Call the Teacher and talk to the Teacher.
Typically per fevers, a child has to have been fever free for 24 hours, before they can return to school.
Then, your daughter also has visible and obvious sick symptoms.
And she will be coughing and having a runny nose etc., and well, that is a bit icky to be around.
Seems like she just started the cold. Colds take about 7-10 days to go away. Generally.

Did you take her to the Doctor?
Get a Doctor's note?
I would.
Sore throat can be just a cold, or strep.
She is also falling asleep on the bus and looks sickly.

Your daughter still has a fever today. Tomorrow, even if she does not have a fever, that is not 24 hours without a fever.

Last night she was coughing and now has a sore throat and it hurts when she talks... but she went to school???? You said: "she just got off the bus..." How come she went to school?

I would keep her home.
And because her cold is progressing/getting worse.

Think in reverse: if someone else's child was sick just like yours... would you feel comfortable about them being at school, and/or being next to your child... and/or at the ceremony?

During the last 2 days of school, in my daughter's class, a girl was sick. There were school parties and a classroom party. The girl was sick. So the parents kept her home. And she missed the last 2 days of school & the parties. But it could not be, helped.

It is against school policy for a child to be in school within 24 hours of running a fever of 101.0 or above. Same thing if they puke or have the runs. Those are signs of a contagious illness.

She needs to stay home or if the school is on top of stuff they will be calling you to come get her as soon as you drop her off.

Sadly, I would probably keep her home. A lot of families have travel plans starting as soon as school gets out, and I'd feel terrible to get others sick. Our school has a policy that they must be fever free for 24 hours, so even if she has no fever, my kids would not be allowed to come back next day.
Good luck!

I wouldn't make a call one way or the other until the morning. If she is obviously symptomatic and miserable I would keep her home. If she seems OK and wants to go to the ceremony, I would consider taking her to school only for the graduation, and leaving right away when it is done. Unless she is 100% better in the morning, I wouldn't see any reason to have her go in for the whole school day. Let her sleep late and rest up at home before the event.

See how she does-but you take her to school tomorrow (no bus)-let her participate with her class-and then right home-good luck! Not suggesting that the bus ride was bad-just makes the day longer and more tiring in the long run.

Rule is 24 hours fever free for most schools. She probably won't have a fever first thing in the morning but as the day goes on she may, that is why the suggest waiting 24 hours. I know you don't want her to miss out, but it wouldn't be fare for her to expose the other children to what she has. And, if she isn't feeling well I am sure she would be most comfortable home in her pj's relaxing.

I am shocked at some of the responses suggesting sending in your child in sick!! This is one my biggest pet peeves, because I own and operate a preschool, and deal with this all the time. It is inconsiderate to send children to school sick, most mothers HAVE to work, and deliberately sending your child sick to school is WRONG!! and selfish. If children are sick they need to be home to rest and recover!!

I most likely would've kept DD home. Her health & everyone else's are more important than some event she won't even remember. Sore throats can be indicative of many things... I sure hope she doesn't have strep.

Knowingly sending your kid while there are obviously sick & possibly contagious is not only selfish, it's very inconsiderate.
