Ok, I know this is just TMI but I really have to ask. I have a beautiful 12 year old daughter. She passes gas sometimes that is just repulsive and we have to have her firmly shut the bathroom door after bowel movements! what's up with that? i've been having her drink Kefir (its like yogurt) lately and i haven't seen an improvement. I know it's not normal to smell that much. she doesn't have a "pure" diet but it's really not horrible. Does anyone know what type of food or problem really causes this?

Have you considered she might be lactose intolerant? My son has this same problem with dairy products. It is just a thought.

I just wanted to add that I would also have her tested for gluten intolerance. It causes stomach discomfort for many people, and may be tha cause of the smell too. For sure get it checked out, and maybe you could all feel better soon:) ~A.~

By any chance has your daughter been on antibiotics lately? I don't mean to alarm you but last summer my son was on several antibiotics in a row - it was overkill. The result was that the drugs killed the GOOD bactieria in his stomach and he contracted C. diff. (Clostridium difficile)which is a dangerous bacterial infection that can be drug resistant. The first symptom is that movements are horribly stinky - like you cannot stand to be in there with them. If your daughter has been on any antibiotics I would mention it to your pediatrician and he will have to take a stool sample. Hopefully that is not the case though. Good luck.

Don't mean to alarm you, but if her stool is tary and black she might have an ulcer. It is not uncommon for the smell to be revolting. Ask your doctor for a hemocult kit. They will explain what to do. After working in G.I. for almost 5 years before having my daughter, I can tell you it is not uncommon. We used to believe stress was the cause of an ulcer, but it is not. It just argervates the situation. Ulcer are actually caused by bacteria. She could also just have IBS. Something as simple as increasing fiber will help. Something like benefiber. You mix it in your drink, not in carbonated drinks and increase slowly as not to cause gas. Siliac disease is possible but not as likely(when you cant process glueten) Let me know if you have more questions.

I was gonna suggest possible food reaction. I knew a little boy who had the same problem; if he passed gas around parents with babies, they would check to see if baby's diaper was dirty. They found out it was bananas. If he ate bananas he got the horrible gas. I know that is kind of random, but maybe you could track what she eats on what days it's the worst, and try to determine from there.

I know these cause stinky gas with my boys: beans, eggs & broccli. This may sound wierd but also when they drink alot of "junk" & no water...they have bad gas.

I would take her to a pedi GI dr. Usually gas is a response to something you're stomach can't process or isn't happy with, so my guess is she's got a sensitivity or allergy to something she's eating. Dairy is very common but could be any number of other things as well. The Dr. can test for these and screen for other issues that might be contributing. Cook Childrens has a good office. Good luck!

if your daughter is lactose intolerant (or otherwise lacking in digestive fauna), other paths to try instead of the kefir is water-kefir or even just digestive enzymes by themselves. two sources i would recommend for info on these are found by googling "dom's kefir" and "enzyme stuff."

Ditto that it could likely be gluten intolerance/celiac (the gluten found in wheat, rye, barley and oats is an extremely likely culprit). Gluten intolerance/celiac can result in poor digestion, thus food is rotting/fermenting in her GI tract rather than being broken down and nutrients absorbed. Dairy can also be a culprit. Here's an overview of celiac:
http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/celiac-disease/c...
(noting the malodorous stools)

You can get her tested without a doctor's order here (it's a fully certified (and then some lab): www.enterolab.com

Most docs know nothing about nutrition, so won't be able to help you with this. Also, if her stools float, that's a sign of malabsorption of fat, another red flag for gluten intolerance.

Have you noticed if it is worse after eating or drinking dairy products? She could be lactose intolerant.
