My Daughter's Foot

I have a daughter who just turned 1 on Sept/ 21. She started walking on the 16 (aided) and has beedn walking for about two weeks unaided. I noticed a few days ago that her right foot goes out to the side and her left foot stays where it is supposed to when she walks. Is this normal or should I be worried?

What can I do next?

When my son was young he did the same thing. I took him to a doctor and they gave me prescriptions to put wedges on his strideright high top shoes. He had to wear them all the time for about 6 to 8 months but his foot was easily corrected. I would definately take her and get it seen about

Not sure but I would definitely mention it to the dr on her 1 yr old visit. If that has passed then I would call and mention it to the nurse or whomever you talk to. My ped. always asked that my child walked so she could observe. So that may be standard and they may notice it anyway. It is more likely something that will straighten out as she strengthens her legs and her gate.

Your daughter sounds like a little angel with wonderful parents. For your peace of mind, you should ask her pediatrician to recommend an orthotist or physical medicine doctor who can evaluate her foot placement thoroughly. Childrens' Hospitals have orthopedic clinics as well. Physical therapy can do wonders when started early. My son was born with a mild form of right-sided cerebral palsy that we didn't "see" until he started trying to crawl. We were able to get him into physical therapy right away and he's made tremendous improvements, even playing competitive sports as well as his peers now. Best wishes!

Ask a doctor (or TWO) what they think about it. I'd just keep asking until I'd get at least one professional opinion that made sense to me!

Our oldest daughter (now 31 w/3 little ones of her own) started 'tripping' over her left foot (it would turn under her) right after she started walking. I asked our family doctor (who also served as our pediatrician at the time) about it, and he felt her ankles and said that IF the tendon (or whatever) on the inside of her foot/ankle was tight/short and MAKING her foot pull in, it would need some kind of therapy or treatment, but the tendon (or whatever) on the OUTSIDE of her ankle/foot was simply loose/long and he said that as her ankle muscles strengthened, it would take care of itself (and it did).

God bless and good luck!

My 14 month-old does that and my neice did the same thing and she has grown out of it. My daughter uses her right foot to push off with. I think it is a balancing trick. I think you should not worry until she has had time to refine her walk.If you are worried call your peds nurses line. I call mine all the time. Many times they have told me that it was nothing to worry about, but I like peace of mind when it comes to my kids.

II would get it checked out. I warn you though, some Drs will wait forever to do anything. I have always had ankle problems/flat feet. The podiatrist I saw told my parents that while I was a child nothing could be done other than some extremely uncomfortable shoe inserts. And I know you are probably worried about whether or not this will effect her athletically or normal walking or running. As far as I know, it will not, my father has walked "penguin toed" (feet pointing out instead of straight) for all of his life, he's very athletic, runs every day, and his feet don't bother him at all. I would get her into a podiatrist office just to have her checked out, but more than likely it's not going to be a huge problem.

since she is one im guessing you just had or are getting ready to go in for her check up. talk to the doctor about it. my daughter drags her left foot they said nothing to worry about yet but watch it.... give the doc a call if you already had the appointment just say there was something you forgot to ask about shouldn't be a big deal to get you in. good luck

My daughter also just started walking. She usually has both legs out almost making a triangle shape. That seems wierd to me too. I would see what some other moms say and then it can't hurt to call the nurse advice line at your PEDS office.

Blessings,
Amanda

I suggest you get it checked out, if for nothing else your peace of mind. I just started taking my 5 year old to Dr. Milner at Cary Foot and Ankle Specialists, he's great with kids. www.ncfootdoctor.com

My daughter's situation is a bit different, but what they stressed to me (and I to you) is that with any thing, the sooner you get treatment, the better.

Hi D.... My oldest has her right foot doing the same thing... since she started walking the pediatrician said nothing can be done til shes 3yrs old. She'll be 3in January so I plan on taking her to a podiatrist then. It makes her fall yet its barely visible (that did improve during this past year, before it was VERY noticable)... My dad is a pediatric physical therapist and he said she may just need shoe inserts but that yes they do need to wait til shes 3yrs old... NOW my grandmother (73yr old cuban) says back in the day they used to just put our shoes on backwards... she says my foot used to do the same thing as my daughter and now its fine... my daughter hates shoes so honestly if they have to do something with shoes I have no clue what I'm going to do...My husband had leg braces when he was little. that was in puerto rico...supposedly they don't use those anymore unless its in really REALLY bad condition...
SO all in all , you kinda have to wait and see...

Hi D. L, I'm D. G. what you described sounds abnormal. Get your daughter checked if you have not already. It's best to get things like that corrected as soon as possible. Have a great day. D..

I agree that its too soon to tell anything. A lot of babies appear bowlegged or pidgeon-toed when they first start walking. Most Straighten out on their own as they learn the based way to position their legs and feet and as the leg muscles develop.

I would keep on eye on it but as the other's said nothing really can be done until three or so. My daughter had one turned in and one turned out and now she is 13 and you can't tell. She just grew out of it. The Pediatrician told me to make sure she always had good shoes with good supports. So I tend to splurge on the kids shoes but it helps them in the long run.
