My Daughter's Had a Cold for Weeks!

My daughter has had a couple colds in the past several weeks and it doesn't surprise me since the two girls I watch are constantly sick. No matter how hard I try to keep their germs away from my daughter, she still gets their colds. The one she has now has lasted for at least a couple weeks. She seems to have a lot of muscus settled in her sinus cavity and she then has difficulty breathing - nothing serious, but enough to wake her up at night. I've tried the saline drops and the bulb suringe and that has helped bring some mucus down, but her nose still rarely sounds clear. Is there something else I could/should be doing? I'm also concerned about this causing an ear infection. My son would get colds when he was an infant and end up with ear infections constantly - I think due to the fluid from his sinuses settling in his ear canal. Other than pulling on their ears, I don't know what symptoms to look for - since my son never showed any signs of having an ear infection - we'd only ever find out when he went in for his well baby checks. My daughter has been touching her left ear quite a bit lately, but I don't know if it's because it's bothering her, or if she just found her ears and is touching it so much because of that. At what point do I just take her in to the clinic? Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all the moms who shared their know-how and experiences!! I did take Eliza to the clinic on Saturday. Everything checked out perfectly, but it was so reassuring to know that it was still just a head cold. We ended up buying a cool mist vaporizer which has seemed to help quite a bit, as well as baby Vicks - which I've been putting on the soles of her feet before bed. She still has the cold, but seems to be on the mend! Thanks again ladies!!

My son, Joseph, has Down syndrome. They have smaller craniofacial structures so we deal with sinus and ear infections a lot. We have started doing tuning fork therapy and it seems to have helped a lot. The deep vibration helps to drain out the mucus, which then prevents the infection caused by it sitting there and also to relieve the pain associated with pressure. We use the tuning fork whenever he starts getting a cold. If you're interested in where to find one, you can email me privately.

A humidifier does work wonders, as does vapor rub. Johnson's also has a vapor bath that works nicely if you can take the time to sit with her in the bathtub.
When my oldest was a baby, I was a part-time nanny for the youngest 3 children of 7. Needless to say, there are many colds passed around!
It can't hurt to have her ears checked out. You should also take her in if she has a cough that lasts more than a couple weeks, if she seems to have trouble breathing (besides from a stuffy nose), or a high temperature that doesn't go down.

I think your daughter might have just discovered her ears, but it never hurts to have them checked just in case- especially since she's so young. When they get older (crawling/walking) there might be balance issues with an ear infection. I would check her breathing. Put your ear to her chest, but listen from the back. You're listening for a wheezing or whistling sound when they exhale. Congestion when they inhale is normal with colds.

If she has a fever that won't go down with tylenol- go in. I wouldn't worry to much about bringing her in. I'd rather be known as a nervous nelly mom than one whose child was really sick, but didn't go in because of what the doctors might think of me.

Hi there, My daughter has had the same thing for three weeks. I had her into the Dr. about a week and a half ago. They looked her over and said they was really nothing,it was just a cold she will get over it. By that time she had already had it for two weeks. The ped. sent us home and said that if she was still hacking and coughing and was still really stuffed in a week to call her back. We did and she put her on and antibiotic Amoxicillin chewables, two tablets twice a day, she has been on it for two days and have already noticed a difference!! Hope your kids get better, its really frusterating when they dont feel good.

Hey TYler had the same thing. He was sick for 5 weeks. I took him to the doctor and they put him on antibiotics. That helped if you been tring all the things you say you have I would bring her to the doctor.

My Son had the same thing. He did end up with an ear infection from it. I got the cold and I am still fighting it, I have had to for a month now, and my Son is over his. You might want to bring her in just to make sure that she does not have an ear infection, that could prolong her from feeling better and getting over the cold. Once the ear infection was gone, my Son's cold was gone too. The colds are getting worse now days.. They seem to hang on for long periods of time now...

Good luck! :)

sounds like she has a sinus infection, that can be serious( meningitis) if you let it go too long. take her in right away.

Try a humidifier and if her mucus is bright lime green take her in or if her mucus is longer than 2 weeks it's a sign of a sinus infection.

If she has that much mucus she is probaly very prone to getting a ear infection or has one.

My daughter was constantly sick from 2mos.-5years old in the winters. Gotta love daycare and other kids who spread.

I have taught my daughter to be anal about germs and she will not even play with kids that have bad coughs or nasty looking noses. She's stuck up a bit you could say but this is the first year she hasn't been sick. She's in first grade so maybe the other kids are better about spreading germs but this is the literally the first winter she hasn't been dragged into urgent care or the E.R. several times. I keep her stocked up with antibacterial gel and stuff too in her desk at school and she is great about washing her hands.

Just stress to your daughter not to put toys in her mouth, and wash wash wash her hands. Try a humidifier that's helped us alot this winter.
