My Dishwasher Smells Bad

Every time I run a load through the dishwasher that contains plates, utensils, bowls, etc. that had raw egg on them, there is a bad odor at the end of the cycle. It is not a problem with the dishwasher because it only happens when items have come in contact with raw egg. Also, the smell remains on dishes but not in the dishwasher. If I run the dishes through a second time, the odor usually goes away, but not always. I have tried rinsing the offending items really well before putting them in the dishwasher, but this doesn't seem to help. My husband thinks I have gone crazy and gets mad when I run the dishwasher twice in a row for the same load. He does admit that sometimes there is an odor that is a bit off, but he says it isn't that bad. My 8 year old son has noticed the bad smell too. Has anyone else had this problem?

What can I do next?

Ours did too... it could have a mildew problem in the rings. I ended up using CLR, in there. You run an empty cycle with the CLR, then do a simple rinse cycle after that. it should help. if it doesn't then there is probably mildew inside the tubing. You may need to clean the filter, or the drain line

these are some links I found on the subject on what you can do and target the problem:

You may have stuff clogged at the bottom of the dishwasher. Pull out the bottom rack, unscrew the bottom washing blade, and then pull out the mesh part on the bottom that looks lika a strainer (it usually pops out). .. Clean all of that off with soap and water.. See if there is food stuck down in there or a grease build up..

Sometimes, if you do not use the hot cycle and the drying cycle you can end up with a build up and food down there..

Put it all back together and run it empty with cleanser on hot..

Even though it only happens with the eggs, it could be the dishwasher is going. You may not notice it is not thoroughly cleaning other things because they don't have a distinctive smell like the raw eggs. As others suggested, I would do a complete cleaning of all parts first and hopefully that will take care of it. It things are clogged it will not clean as well. I hope it works out for you!

I haven't had that problem but I did have an odor in my dishwasher and stuff didn't seem as clean. I converted my home to safer products and we now use Diamond Brite. Ran an empty load w/ Mela Magic and Diamond Brite and then resumed washing as usual but with DB. Dishwasher doesn't stink anymore and everything is clean. Even better, no more toxic products!

How old is the dishwasher? It could be the dishwasher may be going? I would also buy the dishwasher cleaner that they sell to clean the dishwasher. May be wash the dishes off with dish soap first before putting them in the dishwasher-the ones with the raw egg. You are not crazy but running the dishwasher a second time all the time could run up the water bill. I bet that is the part that your husband is thinking about. Good luck

I think there's a dishwasher cleaner you can get (in the same aisle as the regular dish washing detergent)... I wonder if putting a little vinegar in there might help as well? Our dishwasher smells at times too... (usually when it leaves too much water on everything)...
