My Dog Is Hurting...

Hi All,
My sweet Big Dog Brooks is hurting something fierce! He is limping pretty badly and I was wondering if all you wonderful ladies (& Men) know of any good over the counter pain relievers I can give him?

He slipped and fell while trying to get down the stairs and hurt his back leg. I do not feel it is anything that warrants a trip to the vet...I am sure he will get better in a day or two and if not then I will ABSOLUTELY take him in to be seen. Just hoping some of you all would have some ideas of what I can do in the meantime to help him? He looks so pitiful and he is just following me around and it is just so sad!!

I appreciate any and all ideas and suggestions.

Thanks guys!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My Brooksy woke this morning and is back to his normal self!

Thank you all for your responses, I appreciate them all very much!

~I am glad I trusted my gut b/c I was correct that it did NOT warrant a trip to the vet!

You really should call a vet, some advice already given is potentionally extremely dangerous. I have a lot oppions on this, but the risk of given wrong advice or dosing, it just to risky.

You can call your vet, but in general, I don't recommend anything that is OTC for humans. Tylenol, Aleve, Motrin, etc. - it's all very toxic to dogs and there is no "safe" dose that anyone can recommend. Even aspirin is not 100% safe. I don't trust stuff you buy at the pet store either. I would get him checked out at the vet because they can prescribe meds that will be appropriate for him, and plus he may have hurt his leg worse than you think. Cruciate ligament tears in their hind legs are very common, just like in people, and only your vet is going to be able to tell if that is what is going on.

My vet said to absolutely not give any OTC drugs meant for humans. You could call a pet store and see if they have anything.

Please check with a veterinarian before giving him anything made for humans. There is a vet on this site. DVMMOM I think.

Ice is a pain killer. I would try icing his leg.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG TYLENOL!!! My neighbor did that and accidentally killed her golden retriever. I seem to remember giving our old lab baby aspirin, but I would check with your VET before giving him anything. I, personally, would take him in for a visit to rule out anything broken or sprained. Dogs' legs work differently from ours and he may have hurt himself in a way that needs medical attention.

Hope he feels better soon.

Hi! Do you have any Advil or Tylenol? Check the dose and give what you would give in human size, a little more won't hurt but don't over do it. If you have liquid that would be the easiest to use. Then, do you have a heating pad? See if you can get him to rest with it.Try to get him to stay still and warm. I know it should be RICE but using ice just seems mean when they can't tell you how much they hate it and well, you can try and elevate. Of course, treats help everything! Hope he feels better---

I can't stand to see an animal in pain.
I would have taken him to the vet immediately.

WHY do you NOT want to go to the vet?! Pets are our responsibility and part of the family. It is your job to take care of them and do so in a safe way. Guessing on a type of medicine that might be safe or not...is not OK. TAKE HIM TO THE WET!!

You need to take him in.
Large dogs are more prone to problems with their bones, a simple fall, a hairline fracture can balloon into a chronic problem that may cost thousands of $$$ to fix later on or require the animal to be euthanized.
I hope its just a pulled muscle...
Good luck.

I'm so sorry.
I like what Elisa said about a heating pad but only put it on your dog for a bit. Don't leave it in his/her bed.
Give him love, hugs & call the doctor tomorrow to see if he/she can prescribe you some pain medicine. Even a few would help.
Just baby him. You definitely may need to take him in to the vet tomorrow if it doesn't get better. He could have pulled something or God forbid...broken something.
If he won't eat, feed him broth, wet dog food, white rice and/or plain boiled chicken breast.
Let us know how he is tomorrow.

You can give dogs buffered aspirin for pain. Do NOT give Tylenol or Motrin.
Personally, I would take him to the vet and have his leg xrayed to make sure nothing is broken.

They have pain killers for dogs at pet shop stores. Thats an option, but you really should call the vet to make sure.

I would not wait to take him to the vet. Waiting a few days can cause
irrepairable damage.

Not sure, but please do NOT give him any NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds) like advil or tylenol. They cannot process them and they can damage their liver.
Talk to your vet about what you can administer at home.

I know lots of old school country vets will say chewable baby aspirin. And there are some theralgesic products similar to Icy Hot especially for animals. Hope Brooks gets better!!!!

I hope, hope, hope you have taken your dog to the veterinarian by now. Pets shouldn't be hurting something fierce and we owe our pets quality medical care.

Clerks at pet stores are completely unqualified to diagnose and treat animals and veterinarians do not have crystal balls to treat over the phone initially.
