My Eight Month Old Is Soaking His Bed

I am having a difficult time with my little man, who is eight months old today. He is soaking himself and his bed. We make sure that we change him everynight right before bed but by 3:30 he is crying and his clothes are drenched along with his sheets. We have tried to point the weapon south, however this did not work. We use Luvs (as all my other friends with little men have suggested, and the ONLY diaper that he does not break out in) and no change. I can not refuse his formula after 5 in the evening as someone suggested as he is only 8 months old. Short of waking up every 3 hours to change him, which is not reasonable, I can not find a resolution. Have other moms had this problem with their infants and how was it resolved? I really want a good nights rest!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went up a size in Luvs diapers and it worked last night. I had previously tried cloth diapers and they were worse yet. Some things definetly work better for others! We had tried Huggies and Pampers before but they really irritated his little bum. After moving up a size in diapers, it seems to work better. I actually slept all night long last night! Oh-I did not limit any bottle due to the fact that he is still to young and he needs those nutrients. He also has severe acid reflux which our pediatrician also has us thickening his bottle to keep the formula down. Lighter liquids such as juice and water risked him spitting up during the night. I appreciate all the advice and hope everyone has a fun filled spring!

I don't think the Luv diapers are the best. You need to try Pampers if able to. Also another thing to think about is if the diapers fit. If they are too small it can cause problems like you are having. You might try a bigger size.

I think it was around a year that we started having this problem with all three of my boys. I too tried everything. Even rubber pants. The only thing that worked for us was overnight diapers. They were a little big on them when we started, but it kept them dry and saved on laundry! My youngest is 19 months and I ran out of night diapers one evening so I thought I could make it one night with a regular. Ha Ha not a chance. Stock up on Huggies overnight you can't live without. Good Luck.

Being a mother of four, three of them being boys. I have had this happen a few times. Like the other women have said try moving up a size at night. We have always used luvs and if you look on the package or box they over lap the weight requirements, so he may need the next size up for at night and then use the smaller size during the day.

I agree with you about not cutting out his liquids after 5pm. If you did it would only cause him to wake up in the middle of the night and be hungry.

Good luck

Hi! I've had this issue with both my kids. Try moving up a size in diapers in the evening. Works like a charm every time for me.

We had to use overnight diapers for my oldest.
We also check the diaper before we go to bed. If it's already wet (it usually is) we'll change it. They usually don't wake up enough to cause a problem. We just put them back to bed and they're out! =)

Try Seventh Generation diapers. My son has never leaked yet, and he is almost 2. They are also good for very sensitive skin. Last weekend, we were out of town and forgot his normal diapers. We bought Pampers, and he leaked frequently, even during the day.

E. - I think 5pm is too early to cut your child off however I agree that you need to cut off fluids before bed. It's sometimes the only way to stop the overflow overnight and it's a great habit to get into for when you potty train. I always tell moms who are working on potty training after 7 no more liquids. If you stop putting him to bed with a bottle it should do the trick, or if he throws a huge fit and wont go to sleep without one, you might try putting water in the bottle instead of formula because he might not want it so much - i.e., he wakes up, takes a swig, doesn't care about the water, goes back to sleep instead of guzzling the whole thing down. Hi E.,
I had this same problem with my son. He would leak out of the top of his diaper because of his "little weapon". Even if you point it down, it doesn't stay there!! We tried the overnight diapers for older children, up to 60 pounds, who have accidents at night. He was only an average sized 12 month old at the time. No matter how many sizes we moved up it still poured out the top. I believe they are called Overnights. They came up pretty high on him so they kept everything contained!!
Good Luck!

How about covering the disposable diaper with a cloth diaper and following that with a pair of waterproof pants? I wouldn't deprive him of a bottle before bed. He's still very young. Good Luck.

Get out of the Luv's! They really stink as far as overnight usage. You said he breaks out from other diapers? We used cloth, and when we went on vacation one time I bought a package of Luvs to use, adn I threw those things away, they were awful! My son would pee straight out the front of it, THROUGH the diaper, you could see where he peed. It was nonsense!

Of course I'm going to suggest you switch to cloth because you can customize the absorbancy and pretty much guarantee a leak free night.

Another thing, if he breaks out from disposable diapers, it might be your cue to switch to cloth. His skin is telling you the chemicals are too harsh! IF you don't want to switch to cloth, then line th diapers with a diaper shaped piece of fleece. IT will keep the chemicals off his skin and allow you to use a higher quality diaper at night without him breaking out.

Going up a size might help as well, but with my short experience with Luvs, they were terrible.

when you diaper him make sure his little man is pointing down!
We have always had luck with the baby dry Pampers. Maybe try the next bigger size! Those are my ideas.

I agree w/ the Huggies overnights and the going up a size. My first son has always been (still is) a big wetter. I always knew when we needed to go up a size because he would soak through the diaper and wet the bed. Even now at 5 1/2 I have to wake him up 2-3 times a night to go to the bathroom so he doesn't wet the bed.

Hi E.,
You've maybe already tried a different brand of diapers, but I would suggest Huggies. Our little guy leaked out of every other brand, and I'm serious that we tried every kind, but he is good with the Huggies comfort fit brand. They are in the maroon packaging, not the red and white packaging. Hope this works!

Hi!

I had the same issue with my little guy for awhile. I use Pampers, but for overnight, I switched to Huggies Overnights... and they work great. In the beginning, for extra dryness, I put a pair of rubber pants over the diaper (kind used with cloth diapers) to help keep from soaking through- and that also helped. Now, it's Pampers during the day and Huggies Overnights at bedtime. Works like a charm!

Good luck!

Try the Huggies overnights...they are truly the best diaper, they stay in place, come up a bit higher on the belly and really hold a lot of liquid. If he's breaking out, maybe try a cloth diaper inside of it, so his skin doesnt touch it..or you could just switch to cloth diapers.
