My Hair Is Falling Out, HELP!

I gave birth on May 27, 2009. About two months ago my hair started falling out, at first I thought it was breakage from some extensions I had put in (that weren't supposed to damage my hair) but as I started looking closer, the hair is coming out at the root! I've consistently been losing more and more hair and it's freaking me out, everyone is telling me it's hormones and it's no big deal but I don't want to wake up one day bald! Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do to stop it from happening worse? I have thick thick hair and i've already lost about 1/3 easily. Help!

My hair was falling out due to a medical problem and my body wasn't getting the nutrients it needed. My doctor had me get Biotin it's over the counter at HEB of Walgreens and it's just a few dollars. I take 1 a day and it has helped so much. Give it a try

This happened to me too. I noticed lots of hair loss about 3 months after I gave birth. Clumps! I was worried too, but the hair loss slowed down. Then after losing so much, I have lots of new growth. It's most noticeable on my forehead, but I can see it all over my head. I do believe it's hormonal. I don't know of any way to control it. It just has to grow back... slowly, ugh! It happened with both of my pregnancies.

Completely normal. I was told that during pregnancy your hair just continues to grow. Normally, you have several cycles..growth, rest, then that hair falls out. So essentially, your hair is resuming it's normal growth cycle which includes falling out...just seems to feel like it is all at once...

Normal. I had gastric bypass 7 months ago and was warned about hair loss. They said if that happened, it could be b/c I wasn't getting enough protein in. Maybe up your protein intake to help. Good luck!

As others have said -this is normal. My hairdresser once told me that anytime you start to notice a major hair fallout, ask yourself what was happening 6-8 weeks ago because that is the time it takes for your hair and body to respond to "something trauma" or something stressful.

I would also get your thyroid checked as sometimes pregnancy can trigger an under or over active thyroid.

Take care and be sure to talk to your Dr. about your concerns - and keep repeating your concerns until you are heard.
blessings,
Stacy

It most likely is hormones, but you don't have to like it. I would make sure you are getting enough complete protein and take a hair, skin and nail vitamin. It will even out eventually once your hormones get back on track.

Good Luck! If you are really concerned, you can go see an endocrinologist.

It is most likely hormonal. It is normal for you to loose hair for up to 6 months after you give birth. You still have another month to go on that. But, you might consider making an appt. with your doc and having them check your thyroid levels. Your thyroid controls most of your hormonal output. So, if it is off, it could be causing the hair loss.

Hello M.,

The same thing happened to me and to other new moms I know. I almost went bald in a couple of patches. It finally stopped just when I thought it was the worst. It is now growing back and I have lots of little fuzzy hairs. Hopefully the same will happen with you. It was so bad it stopped up my drain in the shower. it is just hormones. Good Luck!

Hi M.,
I lost a ton of hair after having my son. It went on for quite a while. Some say that you only lose the hair retained during your pregnancy as less falls out, yet, no way....I lost a ton. I also already have thin hair. It eventually started to fill in yet it has never been the same. Also, I noticed that about 6 months ago my hair seemed to be falling out again (my son is 4, so it is not related) and I really think it was stress. I also dye my hair at home and I have noticed some breakage. I am not sure this helps my cause. Also ask you doctor to check your thyroid. That is usually the first thing they check. Also keep taking the prenatals.
good luck!

Some hair loss is normal after childbirth, but it couldn't hurt to have your GP run some tests to rule out other causes of hair loss. Basically to make sure you aren't anemic or developing a thyroid problem.

Harmonal changes after you have a baby can make your hair fall out. Worrisome I know but will stop soon, Another thing that makes your hair fall out ia anemia. Take iron supplement and that should help.

It's normal. Stop freaking out. It happened to me with both of my kids. It grows back. Mine fell out about 3 months after birth and was growing back after that. Keep taking your prenatal vitamins.

Yep, very normal. Very normal and very annoying. But normal I'm afraid. When it was happening to me I started worrying too since the hair on my legs stopped growing also. When I asked the doctor about it she asked me two simple questions. Did I have any true bald spots on my head? No, just a little thinning and limp hair to boot was my answer. And about my legs she said "and you're worried about not having to shave?" She told me it was a good thing and to enjoy not having to shave for a little while. That comment needless to say shut me and all my hormonal mama worries up fast. I put my hair in a pony tail, kissed my baby, and tossed out my razor for a while. It was rather liberating.

If you survived 9 months of pregnancy you can survive this too. Promise.

Smiles,
J.

M.,

The exact same thing happened to me when I had my little girl. My doctor assured me many times that it was okay and that some people just get it worse than others as I called many times in tears. I lost half of my pony tail it seemed like. It did end and get better by about 6 months. I don't know if you are breastfeeding but I did some research that it adds to the loss. Hope it gets better and know that I went through it and my hair is totally back to normal.

good luck

Mine also came out in clumps. I have super thick hair to begin with so it wasn't too bad, and it all came back in. Of course like most new mommies I cut my hair short and that helped too! Definitely check with your doctor if you feel your hair loss is extreme, there may be some other cause, but it's probably normal!

I've been nursing for almost a year after the birth of my girl and I'm still losing hair. You won't go bald. You have more hair than you think.

This so happened to me too! Unfortunately it's still continuing and my daughter is 21 months now. It's horribly stressful. We women take pride in our hair!

I was first told by my doctor that it was the usual hormonal change that happens to all women. Your body is trying to "get back to normal" and regulate itself again. I get that. It happens. But this is not a continuing "normal" thing by the time your child is a year or older (especially if you have stopped breast feeding).

After you have ridden this out, meaning if it persists and/or worsens after your child turns a year you may want to seek another opinion. It could be a thyroid issue, stress-related, etc. Blood work should clear that up. If it doesn't...then you and I are in the same boat. If your blood work is clear the only explanation a doctor will give you (at least in my experience so far) is that it is female pattern baldness.

If female pattern baldness is the case, you are only able to treat it with a specific Rogaine geared towards women. But be aware that you cannot treat your hair with this product if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive.

Good luck! I feel your pain! : )

Hormone fluctuations after pregnancy can cause this, and it's temporary. It sure is scary when its coming out in clumps though!

Normal I'd think. After my 4th child I lost a large amount of hair. It freaked me out too. I have thick hair, and after about 3 weeks of losing it in wads, I kept what I could. About a month or so later, I had a quart size ziplock that was half full when the hair was smushed down. Really, I lost close to half my hair. One day, it finally stopped falling out. I feared waking up bald, but it was all for nothing, since I never went bald. Really, I was the only one who could tell the difference. My husband knew only bc my hair was all over everything.

Contratulations on your new baby!

Did you notice how fabulous your hair looked while you were pregnant? Your body hangs on to hair and the normal cycling of hair growth/death is curbed during pregnancy.

So you've got 9 (10) extra months worth of hair on your head. You're just letting go of that. It starts a few months after baby is born and it is caused by your hormones changing from pregnancy/mom-of-newborn levels to all-out-superwoman state. It lasts for longer than you think it should, too. Make sure you use the hair catch in the shower.

Sorry but yep, loosing hair is normal!!! I lost LOTS with both my kids!! With my first one, I too lost a lot and was freaking out that something was wrong but the doc assured me that it was hormones due to my body trying to get back to normal. When it happened again this go round I was ready and knew it was coming. Loosing hair after delievery is just one of those annoying little things that hsappens. It will stop when your baby is around 6-7 months old. You won't loose all your hair!! You have more hair on your head than you think. I know, cause sometimes I think I washed out all my hair but it is still there! Ha It gets better!!!
