My Hair Needs Help!

After my daughters were born, I noticed my once-thick and curly hair was starting to thin. Add on top of that coloring it twice, and it's brittle, weak and very thin. Are there any products I can use to bring back the thickness and strength it used to have?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies! I went out and got some Pantene products, and two friends of mine are going through Beauty School, so I get to be their "guinea pig" so to speak. :P I hope this brings back the lustre I once had! Thanks again!

I dont know how much you are willing to spend but after frying my hair from coloring it a few times I have been using salon shampoos and conditioners for daily use and for the first month or so a deep conditioner once a week as well. I have found that using the salon formulas has improved the health of my hair a big deal. Also, I have been using the Fantastic Sams brand and that is good also. I usually get those for 2 for $20, so more then walmart but cheaper then Aveda or Redkin etc. Good luck!

Oh man, I feel for ya. The same problem happened to me, and unfortunately, unless you take pretty drastic measures, there isn't much out there.

I used Nioxin products and they seem to help. http://www.nioxin.com/
They are a company that says they specialize in thinning hair. Check it out, you won't be dissapointed. Many people I know use this and have had great results...I have. And, I don't work there...honest.

I do find that if I stop using it (mostly because of the expense of the product) my hair will thin again after a few months. It's the only product that doesn't seem to have devistating results if I stop using it...my hair just goes back to what it was as if I had never used the product to begin with. I'm leary about using Rogain for women because I've been told by my doctor that it can have some negative results, and I'm not ready (or desperate enough) to make that committment. But, a shampoo, conditioner I can do. (I use regular hairsprays and gels, but they do have styling products available. They also have some root stimulator and other scalp therany pruducts that I have used, and liked as well, but I currently don't use them.) Good luck.

Dear J.,
The only solution to mending your dry, brittle, over worked hair is; (and, I hate to have to be the one to say "I told you so.")
GROW IT OUT!!!!

Believe it or not, your natural, curly, healthy hair will again shine, but only if you stop using dye products. And hair sprays, and gels, and a lot of other products full of rubbing alcohol. Yes, rubbing alcohol! No wonder your hair is so dry, hey? Many products just arnt good for your hair. Period.

After you get through the bravery it takes to grow out the existing product (dye) that is currently plauging you with bad hair days, your hair, I promise you, will look its best, so long as you never mention the word "Clairol" to a single strand of it again.

Dont waste your money on expensive salon shampoos... Get what you like from Wal*Mart. (Tresseme is good.) And, I always wash and rinse my hair with cool water. Stimulates the scalp. Heat is not good on hair, stop blow drying and using a curling iron if possible.

Good Luck... Been There! I havnt had a bad hair day since I went natural almost 7 years ago. No bad days, now thats something to look forward to while your growing it out! The curls will come back, mine did. Along with the shine, and the bounce, and the compliments!

Good advice from everyone else-keep in mind that your hair might come back! I lost a lot of my thick curly hair and it is now growing back in although it is not as curly as it used to be. I joke that my daughter stole my curls! She is now 18 months old. Hope it grows back for you, in the meantime go to the salon (or beautyschool) and get a deep conditioning treatment.

I am glad that I am not the only one that has happened to. I have been using Sun Silk products and Infusium leave in conditioner and that has seemed to help me out. Thank you A.

Ok you have gotten some good and some questionable advice. Ask your DR first, but I am a Hair Stylist and I have seen so many of my clients go thru this...it is normal! For 40 weeks you loose virtually no hair so this is your bodys way of catching up. I had seen so many that sat in my chair but when it came time for my head to molt it was so freaky! I totally disagree with using cheap products. Your body is transitioning from the hormones and you need to take care or you hair AND scalp! Star from within drink lots of water, protien, and excersize. Bumble and bumble has a great product for hair loss(even if it is temporary) the investment is worth it. It is called Bumble and bumble Treatment use the #3 in the Density Remedy line. If you are looking for something cheaper I have seen great results from Nioxin!
Good luck!

I have had the same problems and have tried nearly everything. The best I have found is actually Pantene Restoratives- they make one for post-baby hair (among others) and I really like it, way more than the ultra-expensive stuff I have tried. Good luck!

The Nioxin is always a good thing. I would say though...PROTEIN PROTEIN and more PROTEIN. I am a stylist for over 10 years now and I went thru it, and I see it all the time. If you use actual hair products, i.e. conditioning treatments, be careful, you CAN use too much. Ask a professional.

Look for hair products with Nioxin. My hairstylist gave it to me after my son was born and it helped a lot.

Hi, this is just a suggestion, you might need to get your thyroid levels checked. After my second child, this same thing happened to me, and I found out that I had become hypothyroid. (Underactive thyroid). I guess the pregnancy had triggered it. It's not a major thing, but would be if left untreated. The symtoms you describe are exactly what I noticed. Getting put on thyroid meds gave me my hair back. Good luck!!

I also had this terrible problem after my daughter was born. I continued lossing my hair until she was about 1 year old, and by then my hair was very thin. I found a vitamin that seems to help. My hair stopped falling out and I even cut my once long hair to about shoulder length. My hair is so much more healthy and I also helped a good cause by donating to Locks of Love. The vitiman I use is called Puritans Pride Time released Mega Vitamins for hair www.puritan.com. Good luck. I know your frustation.

Aveda Deep Penetrating conditioner is great, as is the one from Kerastase. You can leave it on for a few minutes in the shower, or for more benefit, saran wrap your head or use a shower cap over it. Sounds funny, but it works!
