I finally took my little one to a allergiest on wed. She has a major sinitus infection. So they put her on eryromycin to get rid of the infection. Well I started her on it wed night. I had to give her 1 tsp 4 times a day. I don't know if it was too much medicine on her tummy or the actual medicine itself, but she started vomiting today! She threw up 4 times tons of yellow stuff. What do you think should I keep her on the medicine? Lower her dosage to 2 times a day?? Do you think she is allergic to the medicine? In the mean time, if I don't give it to her anymore I have to wait till monday to get her something else!!! aagghh!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I talked to a nurse from the doctors office, she said to take her off of it. And to call in monday to get another antibotic. She stopped throwing up but woke up coughing like crazy early this morning. Thanks for all your help!

Since it is the weekend and you might not be able to get a hold of the doctor I would call the pharmacist and get his/her recommendation.

If she has major sinusitus, it sounds like the drainage may be irritating her stomach as well. A lot of times, they will swallow the mucus that drains from their sinuses down to their throat (especially when they're too small to cough it up and blow their own nose with regularity).

What antibiotics do is rid the body of ALL bacteria. But what some doctors don't mention is that the bodies immunity depends upon keeping some bacteria. Some of these bugs are good for us. When the body is stripped of them it overreacts with infection. Did your doctor reccomend a probiotic?

The best advice is to call your pediatrician. Your pedi should always have an answering service that will page the doctor for you. They may be able to give her something for nausea or change the dosage. Usually an allergy consists of rash, hives and/or difficulty breathing. He also may want to change the medication.

Hi T.,

Eryromycin is hard on the stomach. Mucous is hard on the stomach too. Don't be surprised if your daughter gets diarrhea too. Read the info off the prescription receipt. Our Pharmacy attaches a paper that tells the best way to take and possible side effects. If you cannot call your doctor (most have answering services so they can return your call) then go see a Pharmacist.

I took this medicine before, I now tell dr's I can't. I hope your daughter feels better soon.

Erythromycin is an excellent antibiotic, but is almost always hard on the stomach and should be given with food or milk. All antibiotics should be givin within one hour of the time they are due to keep up what they call a blood level to be effective in ridding the body of the offending infection. If you've missed these doses or do not give the entire prescription, you've lost the war. This is why so many doctors will not hand out antibiotic prescriptions anymore. This is exactly how you build a superbug that is resistant to antibiotics. Some medication is taken only as you need it to treat the symptoms like cough syrup. Antibiotics are completely different and the instructions should be followed to the letter unless the patient develops a real allergic reaction, such as a breathing problem or rash. Upset stomachs are not uncommon and are not an allergy unless you think there has been an accidental overdoseage, you should try to continue with food and call your doctor before you do anything else.

baby acidopholus is a great idea but if you give it to her while shes talking the antibiotics it will be nullified. On the last day of her treatment start doing a good dose of probiotics. yo re-establish healthy biotics in her gut. Lots of healthy organic yogurt with little fruit and sugar.
go for the vanilla or lemon instead of fruit. Yoou may want to teach her to irrigate her nose with saline if she will go for it! Its really easy andpainless although a little "wierg" for kids.

I would just have her take it with food in her stomach.
