Have your mother go to a retina specialist. I saw white flashes and it was a retina detachment.Dr. Maisel in New City, Ny is an excellent specialist. ###-###-####

HI C.. sorry to hear about your mom. I'm trying to remember from nursing school and I believe anything flashing in the eye is not a good sign. Go to a different eye doctor for a second opinion. If you need to, go for a third opinion. Something is obviously going on... good luck!

Try a different opthamologist to get a different perspective. Also, have your mother see her regular doctor if she hasn't already and get a referral to a good neurologist. It could be something in her brain as well. I hope your mother finds the answer soon.

I would get her an appt with a retinologist right away!
The first thing that popped into my mind was diabetes...I have had type I for 41 yrs, and I have experienced "flasing" and have had retina bleeds(which make you feel as though you're looking at the world through red glass).
For retinologist, I highly recommend Dr. Mary Mendelsohn in Woodcliff Lakes, NJ. ###-###-####

Also, it is possible it could be an occular or retinal migraine (not sure if that is the correct term, but I had the same symptoms as your mom, but I think that is what the Dr. called it.)

Good luck getting to the bottom of it!

I know that you see flashes of light because of retina problems.Have her checked if retina is detaching. I am not sure if it's 'RED' flashes though , so I might be completely wrong here. But for FYI ,if it is indeed retina issues it can be easily fixed initially. But if the retina has already started detaching(there will be partial vision in that eye) then it's a major surgery else will result in complete vision loss. Hope this helps!

NO. My Mom has floaters which are much different.

Has she been to an optometrist or an opthamologist?

Does she have Diabetes? With heart disease/high cholesterol, chances of diabetes are incredibly high. Even if she hasn't been diagnosed, it could be there. At one point, about 8 years ago, almost 1/3 of cases of Diabetes in the US had not been diagnosed. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and other eye-related disorders.

If it continues, I'd seek the opinion of another optometrist/opthamologist and keep searching until you find an answer.

Good luck!

I agree with Dana...

First go to the primary care dr. for testing to rule out non-eye related problems. Then go to an Othamologist (MD). If you've seen an MD, get a second opinion from someone else. Good luck!
