My niece started with what dr. call craddle cap. She had white dry skin and now it has changed to RED patches on her back, face, neck. Dr. advised to apply Eucerin and keep the skin moist. But we are very concerned. It is hard to see her like that. Is this normal? Do you recomend anything? Do you think it is eczema or allergy. What do we do?

My daughter just turned 2 months and she started out with a very mild case of cradle cap and then her face, neck, and ears got red patchy and yellowish crusty. Our case is seborrheic dermatitis. It's supposed to just go away on its own but I can see my baby is quite uncomfortable with it, especially at night. So for her cradle cap, I use olive oil on a cotton ball and apply it on her head every morning before her bath then comb out the flakes with a fine tooth comb. In a few days, her cradle cap lessened greatly. I didn't even have to use the scalp lotion (triamcinolone acetonide) the doctor advised. As for the red patches and crusties on her face, neck, arms, I was told to apply a thin layer of daktacort cream (miconazole nitrate+hydrocortisone)2x a day for 5 days. Its only been 3 days and the red patches have subsided. My 3 year old daughter had the same experience so they are both sharing the same soap and lotion. We only use Cetaphil cleanser as their bath soap and Cetaphil lotion. What we do is this: After their bath, while the skin is still damp, we add another layer of cetaphil cleanser and instead of rinsing it off, we just pat off the excess with a towel. Then put on the lotion. It works so well that my 3 year old has not had an episode with atopic dermatitis/eczema since she was just a few months old.

I agree with what one of those who replied said about some Johnson's products. I put baby oil to clean her navel and her tummy area broke out in rashes. I also tried using Nivea Baby products on them both and their skin got all bumpy. I was told that Eucerin Calming creme works wonders. I haven't tried it yet, though.

I put Eucerin cream on my son's eczema and it got worse. You have to find the right lotion for you baby. I have been using Aquaphor now and it works much better. ASK your doctor about using a tiny amount of cortisone cream mixed into it (0.5% to 1%) a FEW times a week. Talk to the baby's mother about paying (or getting a referral if it's an HMO) to a dermatologist that specializes in skin conditions and treatment. You will feel much better once you have a specialist in the field look at it. Some babies outgrow this type of thing. I would try to switch if she's using Johnson's soap, it's full of perfumes, and she could be allergic to that! try Dove sensitive skin liquid soap (in the regular soap isle) but remember that it's NOT tear free so make sure it doesn't get into the babies eyes. I use it one my son and his skin has improved a lot. Even if the HMO won't give the referral, you can pay to go to any dermatologist or allergist private party. It might be 1 or 2 hundred dollars, but at least you'll have your answers. Most allergists won't test babies until they're older, so I would just start with the dermatologist. The babies pediatrition can order a blood test to test for a few very common allergies like milk, animals, etc.

Poor baby! I'm so sorry. Have you considered the toxins in the what you are putting on her? I have some lotions etc that would help if your interested. They are toxin free! And would help to heal and soothe her skin.

I would recomend not using soap on baby. Most baby soaps have harmful preservatives and chem in them that the skin is most likely reacting too. Things like eczema and cradle cap are actually the body reacting to toxins in it. (not true for baby acne which is in-fact a hormonal reaction)
And usually take a few years to go away because that is how long it takes the body to learn how to start to process the toxins.

So my advice to you would be to stop using soap, 2 month olds don't really get that dirty, and just wash baby down with warm water. And as for lotions, well....

If you would like more information on about this or about the effects other products might behaving on you and your families health please contact me at http://wisemommy.fourpointwellness.com
you can request more information and I would love to share with you more facts and how to keep your family safe.

Thanks,
H.

I have a son who started out with the same thing and it turned into bad ecgzema, I tried so many baby lotions, but everything seemed to make it worse and irritate it more, so I did some research on baby products, and found that most all baby products are pretty harsh and especially on sensitive skin, with the amount of chemicals, chemical fragrance, and dyes, for example Johnson & Johnson puts a numbing factor in their products so it doesn't sting their eyes (from the amount of chemicals). I spoke to my doctor about it and she agreed, there are a couple good ones like Aveeno, although it does have some of those unhealthy ingredients in it, it is one of the better ones. I was introduced to a product called Arbonne by my pediatrician, that is from Switzerland, it's 100% Pure, botanically based, with none of those chemicals, hormones, or dyes, no Lavender, and it was like magic! It works so well my sons ecgzema is completely under control and now his skin is baby smooth, it never was before. I was so amazed by this product that I became a consultant to get it at a discount. If you are interested in trying it, let me know and I can send you or anyone else interested, some samples to try it...it is the best! You can also read about it at my website www.findbeautifulskin.myarbonne.com click on the tab that says "Products, FREE samples" there are alot of other products there, that are very effective, RESULT oriented products, just scroll down the page until you see the baby line. Don't hesitate to contact me, I would be more than happy to send some free samples! If you likes it, I can tell you how to get it at the wholesale price, which is a great deal!
Take care, J.
