Hi moms~

I have never made a request like this but I am going to give this a shot...
My mom who has had medical problems since I was a young was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in march of this year. She had a double mastectomy and since then has gotten MRSA staph infection and has been on IV's at home since surgery. My dad is the only one working. He lost his job about 8 mos ago and has found a new one but took a $30,000 a year pay cut. So my parents are struggling really bad right now and are looking at trying to sell my dads old truck to get a lil car for better gas. Then today I was told that they may have to get food stamps?? My question is this... Is there anything you can think of that I can do to help out with the medical bills? Her medicines cost over $300 a month right now and we don't know how long this will last??? I thought about a garage sale on their behalf or a bake sell??? I feel so terrible that my father can't pay certian things. This is the first time in their lives that my father can't afford something and it breaks my heart. I need to help some how...Any suggestions would be appreicated!!!

What can I do next?

Hi C.,

You might want to get in touch with Partnership for Prescription Assistance. It is a FREE national clearinghouse of all of the pharmaceutical patient assistance programs. It is free to access and you can do it on line www.pparx.org or by phone 888-477-2669. you will need to provide their zip code and a list of medications that they are taking. Every drug company has their own income levels and it may differ based on the type of drugs. That will be a good place to start. Some may not cover drugs if your parents have other insurance, but some will cover if there are special circumstances. It is worth finding out! You might also see a social worker at the cancer center where she is being treated--they may have some ideas of some local foundations that you may be able to tap into. Good luck to your family. It is hard to see your family struggle with cancer and then have additional financial burdens.

Try the Susan G. Komen foundation, I heard that they have a fund for financial assistance.

I heard on the news that some Pharmaceutical companies give free meds for those who can't afford it. Not sure what the criteria is but here is a link to help you learn how to get them....

Maybe if they belong to a church or community organization, they could help you organize a fundraiser of some kind. Also, if your dad is a veteran, I'd contact the VA to see if there's something they can do. If he belongs to a VFW (veterans of foreign wars) or American Legion, they may also be able to help re. a fundraiser. I hope that helps a little. Good luck!

Oh C.,
I am so sorry to hear about your Mother's Cancer and your Father's struggle, it breaks my heart also! I don't have any brilliant ideas but would be willing to help with a fundraiser if you get any ideas (what, when, where).

Do they just need money or do they also need items? if so, what do they need? Some local business may be willing to help if we contact them. Do you belong to a church (or do your parents) because they could also help with a bake sale, etc.

Please let me know if I can help. I work full time and have 2 little ones but will do my VERY best!

Hi C.,

I am so sorry to hear about your Mom's illness and your Dad's job loss and now a job with a large cut in pay. I recommend contacting Helping Hands in Rockwall, Texas. They would be able to refer you to a place that might be able to help you where your parents live.

Also, I recommend finding a church home in your parents area if they don't already have a church home. If your parents go to a church and make it know to someone in leadership at the church most likely they will reach out to help your parents in many different ways. Church families sometimes help more than family in times of need.

May God direct you and guide you to find ways to help your parents!

http://www.angelfoodministries.com is a great resource that can help them and also try what the other mom suggested about calling the prescription company, some will give discounts or even little sponsorships

also remember, that if this is the first time in their life your dad hasn't been able to pay for things, then he is probably pretty good with money and will be able to bounce back okay over time. sometimes setbacks like these make us stronger so help out as you can, but don't despair :) My father had leukemia my entire life and though it was a struggle, we were a very close family that were held together by our trials.

Have you tried contacting the pharmaceutical companies to see if there is any way to lower the RX costs? If not, here are some links: http://www.breastcancer.org/tips/paying/lower_med_cost.jsp If they are members of a church, have you tried to contact them for assistance. Even though the economy is bad, they normally have some funds available.
In regards to a bake sale, I've heard that cookies, brownies and rice krispy treats are the cheapest things to make and end up selling better than the cupcakes, breads and cakes.
Best of luck.
