There are special diets you can try in conjunction with
medication. Remember, John Travolta stopped his sons
medication. Good luck and really think about not using
prescribed meds.

I agee with Linda. Cut out pre-packaged foods, food with artificial colorings, fast food, anything that doesn't look like something people ate 100 years ago. Try to stick to whole foods, whole grains, plenty of veggies and fruits. You could also try seeing a Naturopath for guidance.

But above all, DO NOT take your son off anything prescibed by his doctor unless the doctor is agreeable and puts him on a schedule. Most anti-seizure meds must be tapered down or can cause big problems. Seizures are nothing to mess with, and ANYTHING you try should only be done with a doctor's full knowledge and supervision.

Please make sure you are working in conjunction with your son's neurologist! Not sure where you live, but Dr. Rita Kirsch is a holistic MD in the Rhinebeck area. I have had several students use her for consultation in ADHD treatment. She may not be comfortable working with a child experiencing seizures, but she may be able to refer you!

I guess it depends on the age of your son.

I know this sounds weird but I give my dog Evening Primrose Oil caplets for his seizures. It's a natural herb that is used for PMS. It works to cut down his seizures to once a month now.

Talk to an herbalist first before doing anything.

Don't do this on your own. You need to seek the advice of a doctor. Your son could die without the proper seizure medication.

Hi M.,

I am happy to help! I work for a medical practice that focuses on epilepsy and seizures. I am a Case Manager here and also provide education. It is important to gain more information before giving you any input. I would be happy to answer your questions, and perhaps have your son come in to see one of our Epileptologists (neurologist who specializes in epilepsy). I also conduct a support group. Please feel free to call me directly: ###-###-####--D..

Hope to hear from you soon!

I don't think there are any... not that I've heard of.

Cleaning up his diet may help... the healthy brain fats (from salmon and cod and flax seed and shrimp) may help offset the storms at least a little.

I do know that eating a lot of chemical crud is bad for brains. Try a diet of whole foods (veggies and fruits that start out as single ingredients, meats and dairy products that aren't filled with artificial hormones, grains that aren't Frankenfoods made with pesticides and covered in herbicides) may lessen the frequency and intensity... but even if it doesn't, his body will be more capable of processing the drugs because it's no longer overloaded with other chemical pollutants from his diet.

Try to completely avoid added sugars, high fructose corn syrup (a frankenfood if ever there was one), and particularly avoid artificial sweeteners --they have a long history of very questionable effects on the brain.

Otherwise, you may like to keep a food diary diligently for a few weeks to see if you can see a link between something he eats and the frequency or severity of the seizures.

Dear M.,

Seizures are pretty serious, so I'm hesitant to give advice online, especially since I'm not (yet) a medical professional. There are a number of disorders that cause seizures, and as you explore a natural remedy, it's important to understand as much as possible about the underlying cause.

That said, I really, really recommend seeking out a naturopath or holistic medical practitioner who can take a complete medical history and prescribe a comprehensive holistic regimen. It may be hard to find someone who'll take your insurance, but most practitioners keep their rate reasonable, and they often have sliding scales.

Finally, as others have said, if your son's on seizure meds now, please don't take him off unless it's under medical supervision. Use natural and/or dietary remedies as a supplement instead.

Best wishes,

Mira
