so i took my son to the drs to get checked out what i thought was a diaper rash that wouldnt go away. comes to find out its a fungal infection. so his dr gave us some medicine. but my question is what causes a fungal infection, because he really didnt go in to any detail about it. and also how about how long does it take for it to be completely cleared up? what do i expect? does it take time? or should i give it a week and if it doesnt clear up should i take him back to the drs... any advice would help.

What can I do next?

This is a common problem and it should clear up with the medication in about a week. Whenever you have doubts or don't understand anything the doctor tells you it’s a good thing to continue to ask questions. Every new mother has lots she needs to know when it comes to her baby's health. I used to bring a pad of paper with me so I could jot down questions that came to while I waited to see the doctor as well as the things the doctor told me. Doctor's generally have only a few minutes to see you and are gone in a seeming flash. Therefore, I would collect myself afterward and ask the nurse at the front desk anything I had forgotten to ask the doctor. You can also call the doctor's office from home. The nurses in the office can usually answer your questions or they will ask the doctor for you. In order to give your new baby proper health care you need to have your questions answered. If something doesn't feel right to you after a few days call your doctor's office. Part of their job of caring for your child is seeing to it that the child’s parents understand his health care needs. So ask for whatever you need understand fully.

Usually, fungal infections are not too serious and will clear up in a matter of 3-5 days with medicine (I'm guessing it's a cream that your doctor gave you?)
Often, fungal infections are caused by too much moisture. So, to help prevent this from happening again, you may want to start using baby powder if you don't already, to keep him extra dry. Or, if you don't like using baby powder then you can just try and change him as soon as you notice his diaper is wet, even if it's just a little bit of pee. Also be sure to dry his tush off really well after bath/swim time - you can even let it air out a few minutes before putting a new diaper on.
Good luck! :)

Hi M., first of all let me say congradulations on your accoplishments. Fungal infection as far as i know caused by a skn virus, for example a ringworm is considered a fungal, I would follow the drs orders on how and how long to apply the cream, change him frequently and if in 10 tens it doesn't sem to be getting better, or you feel it has got worse then take him back in. Hope he's better soon. J. L.

I think it's the same thing as a female's yeast infection and/or Athlete's foot. It's very common and they can get it from something as simple as taking antibiotics. You can look online for a wealth of information. You can also feed your child yogurt with a special ingredient (live cultures) in it to help cure it. This same fungus can get inside their mouth, aka as thrush.

Hi. I haven't looked at what the others wrote but I'm pretty sure your doctor means that your son has a yeast infection, which is very common. (yeast is a fungus) Eliminating sugar from his diet will help him heal and prevent future outbreaks. Be sure to do your homework before you go to the doc so you'll be ready with direct questions and hopefully he'll give you some more detailed answers. Let him know that you would like more information from him or ask him where a good place to find the right info. will be. Parents and pediatricians work together as a team and you have every right to be fully informed before making a medical decision. I know those doc's get busy and they gotta see a lot of people but remember that they're serving you. Ask him all the questions you want and don't worry about his busy agenda. I recommend looking up natural remedies. Good luck!
