Hello,
My son also has a protein allergy and he also had this allergy when he was a month old and his doctor says that they will outgrow it usually by age 1 no later than 2, right now he is on Similac Alimentum and his doctor says that we can try him on regular milk when he reaches age 1 and if he still has the allergy he can drink rice milk, but I wouldn't worry he will outgrow it at least by age 2. Hope this helps.

The doctors thought my daughter had the same thing.. I went thru almost every type of formula they make, including soy products.. till I tried one with low iron.. turned out she couldn't tolerate that much iron. It wasn't a protien issue at all.

I ended up feeding her the carnation good start formula (the comfort protien kind) with low iron. I've herad a lot of mom's with colicky babies swear by the stuff. You might want to try switching to the regular version of it, then maybe try something low iron (since no two babies are alike, yours may be different than my girl was). But, when you switch formula's always make sure you give it 4-5 days worth of time to see if there is any difference. No change is going to be overnight.

I wish you all the best.. you are not alone.

I have four children, my oldest 2 were allergic to milk protein when they were born but outgrew it about 1, my youngest 2 were allergic to milk and soy proteins. My youngest is still on special formula (nutramigin) but her sister (who was allergic to milk and soy) outgrew it at about 1 year. Everyone now can eat/drink milk and soy things on a regular basis.

My daughter had the same thing. When she was first on formula, she would spit up buckets of it with every feeding. Plus, she was eating a LOT! At 5 wks old, she was drinking 32 oz. of formula. Her ped said that 20% of all babies can't tolerate milk protein in the beginning. So instead, we switched to soy formula, and that fixed everything. When she turned a year, her system had developed enough that I was able to switch her to whole milk, like everyone else, with no problems. Her ped said that most babies outgrow it during the first year. I would try switching to soy formula and see if that makes a difference. Hope that helps!

Do not assume it is just a milk allergy. Your doctor needs to give you more specific information which is hard to do when they are only 6 weeks old. My son had extreme colic and horrible "episodes" of pain from birth. It turned out he was allergic to milk and soy. After breast feeding, and going through 7 formulas I found the Nestle Good Start Supreme with comfort proteins worked the best. Get the basic one not with the new additives. The good news is my son completely grew out of it by the time he was 2-1/2! Good luck and

From what i understand protein allergy is the same as Cow's milk algergy. Basically like lactose intolerant.
