My Son Is Having His Adenoids Taken Out. Suggestions??

My son & my nephew were up and running by the end of the afternoon. Both had tubes as well. Mine felt so much better it was a relief. Don't stress. We didn't even use the pain meds but once. He said he didn't need them.

My son had his adenoids out last July. It was very sucessful. He used to get terrible sinus infections, and hasn't had one since. The surgery was at 8am, and we were back home before noon. He was eating again that afternoon. My son isn't picky, but I would assume your son would be fine by that evening as well. My son just turned 3 when he had the surgery, and never once complained of pain. The Dr. said there aren't many pain nerves in the adenoid area. I didn't really believe her, but when he came home playing immediately, and never complained, I changed my mind. I am assuming it would be sore to the touch, but he never acted like it felt bad at all.

We had the surgery performed by Dr. Champion in Allen-loved her!

My daughter had tubes and adenoids done when she was about 20 months. This was almost 10 years ago! She did fine. She woke up very upset and was also upset when they took her but I really think I was more upset than she was! Grandma was able to calm her down and we gave her tylenol (make sure you have this on hand!). She went home and took an nap that afternoon and was completely normal after that. Good luck!

When my son was 5 he had the same surgery; ear tubes and adenoids removed. We had a very easy experience. He was able to eat anything he wanted within hours after the surgery. He was sore and groggy the first day but after that he went back to school and was fine. I would expect that your son being younger may have a day or so with soreness but it really was an easy surgery for us.

My son has had tubes put in his ears at 2 and again at 3. At 3 they removed his adenoids. The entire procedure took less than 15 minutes. He came home and slept, but other than that was his old self. It is harder on the parents than it is on the kids. My son is a picky eater also so if he is hungry feed him what he likes if he isn't don't worry about it.

Lots of popsicles, jello, soft soups. Recovery depends on the child. Feed a picky eater their favorite soft food first to see how well its tolerated.
My daughter was 3 when she got the same thing plus tosils out in the morning. She ate a hamburger that evening just fine at her pawpaws...
Now my grandson had tubes & adenoids done yesterday @ Childrens & he just turned 3 & has ADHD, very very energetic. They gave him some "goofy juice" & w/in 10 minutes he wasn't able to walk a straight line, in 15 he had to be supported & finally laid down, was very relaxed & happy. Take a camera! He was blowing bubbles like crazy. He ate Ramen noodle soup & jello, then later finished his brothers plain hamburger. He is a picky eater but likes those things but didn't want his absolute faves, nuggets & fries from McDonalds, go figure...He was cranky for about 3 hrs after we got home but after that he was ok, ready to rock & roll again.
Don't show you are upset or scared & they do a lot better at handling it.

Our 2 daughters 13 and 10 had both tonsils and adnoids taken out on the same day a week before Christmas. Doc. said the older you get the longer the recovery. 10 year old was dramatically better by the 2nd day, and eating mushy food by then. 13 year old didn't like swallowing so she avoided getting her liquids down, so we had to hassle her to keep her from getting dehydrated for about 5 days. Both were full steam by the holiday. My older one lost a little weight during that time, but she bounced back just fine. Didn't worry about getting all the balance of veggies and stuff during this time. Mashed potatoes, soup, and fruit smoothies were the favorite fare. Eggs went over like a lead balloon. The best news...NO SORE THROATS in 6 MONTHS! Hip Hip Hooray! Didn't miss a day of school all Spring.

He did really, really well. I expected him to act differently and to complain about some pain, but, he never did.

Since your sone (and mine) is a picky eater, how about just using this time to spoil him a little and use the excuse for his surgery??? I gave my son applesause, yogurt, ice-cream, sherbet, pudding... Fun things. Ice cream, yogurt and pudding have plenty of calcium. Organic applesauce is so good (you can get the no-sugar added).

He won't be little much longer. Use this spoiling, cuddling time to just enjoy!!

Overall it is an easy recovery IF you ensure that he takes it easy. My 5 yr old daughter had her tonsils and adenoids taken out in November. The first day and night were rough. Everyone reacts differently to anesthisia. It seems her tummy didn't like it as it processed through her system. Other than a hard first 12 to 24 hours. Things went smoothly.

The doctor was VERY clear about the calmer and more still you keep them the easier the recovery will be.

Tubes is another story - they are superr easy to recover from. Both my kids have had them twice. The child is under for only about 10 minutes. They were both eating and playing just fine the same day.

Here is my recommendation and what worked for me - plan for the worst and hope for the best. This way it will all be fine. I really don't think eating will be an issue since the tonsils are not being taken out.

My son had adenoids removed and tubes put in at the same time last August. He was 3 years, 3 months and had 7 double ear infections that year prior to surgery. KNOCK on wood... he hasn't had any since! He slept most of the day of surgery and had a scratchy voice the next day. After that, he was TOTALLY fine! The worst part about the whole experience was having him wake up from the anesthesia... and no one prepared me for that. He cried hysterically for about 20 minutes - with his eyes closed. It was horrible. So, be ready for a scared little Logan after surgery. The good news is, Payten didn't remember waking up at all. So, only my husband and I have the bad memory. :)

My 5 year old had this exact surgery (adenoids and tubes) about 2 1/2 years ago. The results were great! The recovery was so easy in fact, that we traveled with him the very next day. The surgery was very quick as well. As far as eating... I can't say that I remember any difficulties. He has always been a pretty good eater though. Good luck!

My son is 5-1/2. He just did tubes/adenoids in April. He was groggy after surgery, and hurt a little. We never even filled the pain medicine...just used ibuprofen. He didn't have any drainage or anything. He was back to himself pretty much the next day. He spent the first day watching TV on the couch. I hope your son's procedure goes as well as ours did!

My son had his adenoids removed about the same age as yours. He did well and had no complications. He was groggy for about 5 hours. Later that evening he was doing well and eating normally. I would plan on a quiet day but by the next day he'll probably be good as new.

I do not recall my surgery, as I was only 4 at the time but I had my tonsils and adenoids out during an early morning day surgery and ate a full meal that night. I dont remember feeling sick or being sore and from what my mom has told me I didnt act like anything had happened.

My 16mth old babygirl just had the same procedure done a month ago. I had the same feelings about it, but everything turned out perfectly. The day she came home she slept most of the day but she had her moments were she would get up and play and lie back down.
The most downtime she had was maybe 3 days but those 3 days she ate just like she did before the surgery. My doctor said every childs recovery is different and I did experience her getting a temperature those 3 days but I gave her pain medicine followed by the ear drops. Overall he just might want to rest a few days.

P.S. That first day she had a hard time trying to cough up the flem in her throat... that was our only problem.

no worries my middle girls had it done and both are doing fin e make sure you have advil or tylonal for hte first day then should be fine but i will keep you and yours in my thought and prayers god bless

K., my son had his adenoids out last year when he was 3. He did great! He woke up a little confused and a bit angry..which the doctor said is normal in some children. Once he saw me he calmed down. I took him home and he slept for 2 house woke up and fed him soft foods. He drank a tone of water and ate, bannanna's, ice cream, apple sauce, jello and other things like that for the first 24 hours. I will tell yo by that night he was great! The next day he was eating normal except chips or any crackers. He should be great.

My daughter had her adenoids and ear tubes done at three. The hardest part was when she came out of anesthesia. She was very fussy, not from pain but the reaction from the meds. Other than that she did great. We did give Tylenol every 4 hours afterwards. More out of prevention of pain than necessity. As far as the picky eater, he could eat better afterwards. His picky eating could be due to a sore throat.

My son had it when he was 3 with no problems at all. Didn't even need the tylenol after the first day. If he does have a sore throat like some children do, I'm sure the tylenol will help a lot.

Glad your dr. is suggesting to take adenoids out and ear tubes at the same time. My dr. didn't want to take adenoids out and put ear tubes in the first time, however, she still struggled with ear infections. Second time around went to a dr. down here and he took adenoids out and put another set of tubes in. Recovery was about 1 day if that. Depends on the anestetia. (spelled wrong) She was fine and around the same age as your son. Hasn't had an ear infection since. (she is 16 now)

K., my little girl had that procedure done last year, and she had no problems. Her throat was only sore for a day, and her appetite didn't change. Good Luck! I still remember how scared I was.

My son had his adenoids out and tubes put in when he was 13 months old. I think his neck was sore for about a week, he was a bit fussy and didn't sleep well. We kept him dosed up on Motrin and that seemed to help. Our ENT said that they have to crank the head back pretty good and that causes neck soreness.

My best friends son just did this procedure, and she said the thing that she was not prepared for was that he actually seemed better the first and second day, but then was more grumpy and had a pretty sore throat from day 3 until about day 5. I think it all depends on the child, but it sounds like no matter how he personally responds, it is not going to be beyond your ability to help out. Good luck, I am sure all will be well:) ~A.~
