Oh poor little guy :( I don'thave any answers for you other then hang in there and just be there by his side. Kids tend to rebound quickly :)
My 5 year old son will be having a hernia repair as well as a revision to his circumsicion, i was hoping for some insight as to what can be expected as far as recover goes?
My son has been put under before so that I'm not so worried about my concern is mostly the pain. He is such an active little boy... As far as the circumcision it wasn't done properly when he was a baby so he's constantly getting rashes even though it's cleaned... So no it's not for cosmetic reasons

I had a hernia repair when I was 4. My parents still laugh about how I was at home dancing on the fireplace hearth the next day. It didn't phase me a bit. Kids are pretty resilient. Your anticipation of the surgery will be a lot more painful than his recovery I bet. Just stay relaxed, don't let him pick up on any worry you might have. Good luck!
My daughter had that surgery at 7 years old!
It was FINE!
Don't worry.
My Daughter's Hernia was an "Inguinal Hernia."
Surgery was laproscopic.
Took 1 hour.
Then recovery in the recovery room.
Then home that same day.
Then rest.
The Doctor/Nurses will give you an information sheet for after-care.
And what he can or cannot do as far as activities.
Recovery for my girl was FINE!
She was a trooper.
BUT, she had to be careful after that, for 1 month, for the incision/suturing to heal completely. And so that the sutures do not, tear.
My Daughter does Karate.
And, I clearly told her Teachers, what she can/cannot do. Wrote it down for them. Even if the child is fine.... the Surgeon told us, that COMPLETE healing of the incision/sutures, can take 1 month, ideally. AND that, with active kids, he has seen the sutures tear.
So the kid still has to be careful.
Ask the Surgeon ANY questions you have.
My daughter was under general Anesthesia by a Pediatric Anesthesiologist. Prior to the surgery, the Surgeon and the entire surgical Team, spoke with us and told us the routine/procedure and answered any questions we had.
I was even able to go into the operating room with my daughter, while they started the Anesthesia... then I had to leave.
In my daughter's case, they have different "flavors" of laughing gas... for the child to choose from. Then once the child gets drowsy/falls asleep... then I left the room and they start the general anesthesia etc.
My son had a hernia repair done at age 4 - he hardly remembers it. The recovery was quick, he just had to take it easy for a few days. He was in the recovery room until the anesthesia wore off, maybe an hour or two, and then we were able to take him home. We had a follow-up appointment about a week later, but by then he was completely back to normal. We had it done during the school year, and he only missed a few days of class. Kids bounce back so quickly! Don't worry, everything will be fine! Good luck.
I think he will recover fine from the hernia surgery but the other may be different- physical and emotional. I think medically he should recover but that is a lot for a little one to deal with, even at 5. If there is a serious medical reason for the revision then I would say the benefits outweight the risks but if it's just cosmetic then......
My 20 month old just had a cyst removed from his eyebrow area, and he had to be under general anesthesia. I was a nervous wreck, but I could not have been more surprised at how he has handled it. When he first woke up, he cried a lot, and he didn't like the IV in his arm. But then he fell back asleep and slept it off, and woke up good as new. I swear, he was running around like a maniac the NEXT DAY! They always say kids rebound fast, and I am a believer! Of course, everyone is different, so it may not be exactly the same for you, but I bet he'll be just fine. Maybe sore for a little while, and there will probably be some restrictions until he heals, but nothing you can't handle. I would just recommend that you go someplace where they are experienced in putting young children under anesthesia, and talking to your son about what will happen so he doesn't have too many surprises when he wakes up. Good luck!
Kids are incredibly resilient. Chances are you will be in worse shape than
he will be!!! I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Hospitals today treat
children so differently than 30 years ago. Will he be a bit scared sure.
He will take cues from you. No IVS or anything painful until they are
asleep. Give him 48 hours at most and he will be bouncing around the
house. Good luck.
Our 5 yr old had surgery last Sept and again in May on a large hemangioma on her arm. The first time she got very sick from the anesthesia and was throwing up for about 24 hours. The second time I asked them to give her some meds to prevent it and she did great! You may want to request it.
I hope everything goes smoothly!! He will be fine.
My 15 month old at the time had surgery for an undecended testicle in may and it went awesome...he was angry when he woke up from it...like very angry so he went back to sleep and slept most of the day but the next day we woke up....I turned on his favorite show and he hopped up and started dancing!! They rebound quickly!!! Hang in there Mama!!!
