My Son Looks Orange...

My son is almost 10 months old and for the past 3 months or so his skin just looks orange to me. I've watched what he is eating - not a lot of carrots, sweet potatos - not a lot of orange foods. I am just getting a little concerned cause a few people have asked about it. i took him to the doctor a month ago and they didn't say anything about it. Just curious if this is normal for some kids.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everybody for your comments and suggestions. I actually took him to the dr. today for congestion and mentioned it again. (different dr, same practice) She went into a little more detail for me. More than likely it is the food. She said there is no danger at all in the levels of carotine he may be taking in but it may change the color of his skin. We did discuss the liver and jaundice which do not seem to be a concern for her. We are going back at the end of the week for his 9 mo well visit (a little late) where they do blood work anyway and we will request the extra testing for jaundice and liver problems just to be sure. Thanks again everybody!

Juandice is yellowish. Could this be it? Do you let him go in the sunlight for a while? Maybe this will help clear it up.

Take your son to the doctor specifically for this issue. Don't wonder about it on the internet, getting advice from anonymous non-experts. Talk with certified health professionals about it. Good luck!

Both my boys were orange! It was so gradual that I didn't notice at first until everyone started commenting on it. They didn't eat an enormous amount of carrots or sweet potatos either, but I guess for some kids, it just doesn't take as much. My dr said it's called carrotinitis (I believe-not sure about spelling)....couldn't believe it even had a scientific name :)Good luck to you...I wouldn't worry, but if you are, just ask your dr even if only to make you feel better. google carrotinitis and you'll see loads of articles about it.

If I'm not mistaken squash can do it too. My son turned a little orange, but he was eating all of those things. You may want to talk to the dr to see.

Some of the mixed veg. or beef/chicken stew baby foods are full of carrotts. Make sure you check the label. I remember being surprized at how many of the foods had carrotts as the first ingredient.

Are you sure he is not jaundice? I would talk to the doctor again or find a new one. Did you mention the skin color to the doctor when you took your son in last time? Do you use a sunscreen on him that may cause this? You need to do your homework and find out what it is.

Orange or yellow? Some shades of both are so close. If yellowish to orangish, it could be jaundice-a liver ailment. Have a doctor check him out!!! Later

Hi K...
My son did the same thing. His little nose turned orange and I cut back on the orange foods too but it still took a long time for it to finally fade. Jerin is really fair skined so I think that it showed more on him...But my daughter Kambrie never did. Weird. It will probably be ok.

It could indicate some liver congestion. Other signs might be bloating after meals, dry skin, or constipation. I would ask your doctor or feel free to shoot me an email if you would like to take a natural approach.

Is he still on alot of baby food?

My son was orange also until he was about a year and a half. He is now 2 and he looks fine. I specifically asked the doctor about this and he stated that alot of the baby foods have carotene in them and to not worry about it...that once he starts eating more regular foods, the orange color in his skin will go away. This is something I found while looking into it also:

I would definitely ask the doctor about it...just to make sure it isn't his liver. But I suspect it is from the baby food...in which case it does go away once he starts with regular foods. Hope this helps.

If he is on baby food, it is more than likely the orange colored baby foods, like carrots, squash, etc. You have to try to mix up the colors. The orange builds up in their little systems if you don't. It's not harmful. As he grows, it will go away. You may also try giving a bottle with water in it during the day to help filter some of the coloring.

K. he may have high levels of bili rubin in his system--you definitely need to take him to the dr. right away--He may have jaundice or his organs may not be processing everything right. Best wishes!
