My children used to get that atleast 8 times a year and we were constantly at the dr. office and on medications until I took them in one time to a different dr. in the same office and he said that they were referring me to an ear, nose and throat dr. to have their tonsils removed, so they both went in at the same time and had them done at the same time and ever since then they have not gotten it again. I would really look into having his tonsils removed.
Good Luck!

I used to get it all the time until I had my first child, now I get it once or twice a year. Found out my husband's a healthy carrier. So I can look forward to it for the rest of my life, yay. No advice, other than make sure he takes all of his meds on time (I'm up to cipro since I'm pretty much immune to everything else at this point), suggest to your dr. switching his meds from time to time so he doesn't create an immunity against things like I have, and see if you can't find a dr. to remove his tonsils. My pediatrician refused to (said it wasn't done anymore) and now as an adult no one will because it's very dangerous for an adult, but not a child. GOOD LUCK!

Yes, this is not as uncommon as you might think. We just had to have our sons tonsils and adnoids out, it wasn't the most pleasant experiences with a 4 year old, but it helped and he didn't have anymore strep infections ( he is 19 now ) So don't panic, these things happen, just make sure you do what is best for you sons!!!

Oh my, I feel for you hon. I grew up having strep throat at least once a month. It's not fun. My kids have had it a few times as well. Something that helped with my kids is that when they catch a cold...the nose starts running. Now mind you, I'm not a doctor but I treat the nose before anything else. It seemed to me that the drainage is what made the cold turn into strep....or helped it advance. So, decongestants or something that stopped that drainage did the trick for me. Another thing that is impairative is to have your child take ALL his or her antibiotic. Strep has a nasty habit of "hiding", like it's just waiting to flair back up. Your doctor however gives enough antibiotic to win the war. Also, you need to sanitize everything your kids come in contact with after they are diagnosed with strep. Anything they touch, or will come in contact with that's humanly possible...either lysol it or bleach it. Strep can live on surfaces for a long while and all they have to do to get it is touch something that has the germ on it...and then we know where those little hands go...all over the face. When your child is old enough to gargle...warm salt water gargled in the back of the throat does wonders. Seems like that age old trick all but sends strep packing. Most importantly, follow your doctors advice. Each time you go make sure they are keeping a tally on how many times and how often your child has contracted strep. My doctor...(please know that my kids aren't little anymore) told me that they usually wait so many times for the child to sort of grow out of this before they remove the tonsils. Hang in there hon and good luck!!

They need to remove his tonsils. More and more doctors are becoming reluctant to do tonsilectomies because they are starting to believe the tonsils serve a higher function than previously thought, they are a part of the immune system, but with that many instances you really might want to request they be removed.

My doctor drug his feet and did not remove mine until about 8 years ago when I was 17, said I would have to get a lot sicker than 8 or 10 times a year. I can tell you right now I would have missed a fraction of the school days I missed had they taken them out earlier. I was in the doctors office every 2 or 3 weeks sick again by the time they agreed to the surgery, but we let it go on too long, we could have prevented a lot of pain on my part having done it sooner.

Now I rarely get sick! One cold a year maybe, the very occasional severe illness every few years, but the surgery was well worth it and compared to how ill I had been, relatively painless. I had bouts of strep that hurt ten times worse than how my throat felt after the surgery. Do it while he is little and save him the trouble he'll have later.

I would have your sons tonsils removed. Tonsils serve no purpose other than to catch disease and make you sick. If the surgery is done early, it is pretty painless. Kids heal faster than adults. I had it done when I was 3 and I never get sore throats anymore.

My daughter went through that for about 13 years. They finally took out her tonsils and adenoids and I have not had any sore throats or strep since. It is rough on them the older they are. My son was 4 when he had his removed and it was alot easier for him.

When I was little I used to get it every other month and missed a whole lot of first grade. My doctor said it was because my immune system was run down because I had chicken pox earlier that year. Has your son had any other illness' that might have lowered his immune system? As I got older I knew that if I did not get enough sleep that I would catch it. I have to have my sleep to stay healthy. Also I saw that someone else mentioned there being a healthy carrier in their house. I was a nanny for a child years ago that kept getting it and they actually checked everyone in the house to see who might be carrying it and giving it to him over and over again. If they had found someone that person would have been treated with antibiotics to get rid of it in their system even though they were not outwardly sick. I would tell you make sure someone else is not a carrier in your home, make sure he gets enough sleep, and taking vitamins especially with extra vitamin C might help.

Haven't they mentioned taking them out?! I got strep 3 times one year when I was around 6 or 7 and they said if I got it once more they would take mine out. I still it get from time to time, once this year, 2 about 8 years ago. Look in to it, maybe he's just too young? But I think someone told me her 3 or 4 year old had hers taken out recently.
Give him lots of fluids and salty fluids like chicken broth.
Good Luck:)

kids get strep alot nothing serious unless hes not on antibiotics. if hes not on them the strep can go to his heart and do damage... is he in daycare? if so find out if anyone else has had it.... sounds like they may need to be washing hands a little more or cleaning toys a little better! 8 times is a lot you may want to talk to an ent also, ear nose and throat doc... good luck and i hope the pain passes quickly for him!
