Wash some old towels in the machine with a cup of vinegar. We also use vinegar in the downy ball rather than fabric softener. It keeps the clothes soft and odor free and the washing machine clean.

Every since I started using this downy ball thing in my washer, it has this horrible mildewy smell! I stopped using the downy ball but the smell remains. Now it's starting to stink up that whole side of the house. I cleaned it as best I can but it's not helping. Should I run it with no clothes and a bunch of bleach? What should I do? I feel like there should be some part of it that I can take apart and clean.
PS- doesn't it seem like a lot of us have been having stinky appliances lately? Maybe there's something in the water! Or the washer.....
Thanks, mamas! You are always so smart! I ran a load with vinegar and left the top of the machine open overnight, and now the smell is totally gone!

Our machine (which is a front loader) does the same thing. Only now am I finding out from others that we should leave the door open to dry out after the last load.
When it does get unbearably stinky, my husband will put bleach in it and let the "soak" mode go for a while then run an empty load with more bleach. It usually works.
I suggest getting the scented bleach, though. The first time he did it we were all getting watery eyes and itchy noses from the smell. :)
I spray Solumel into my washer and it takes the smell right out and keeps it clean...also it's safe: no chemicals or toxins!!
Good luck!!!
I use my front loader daily and don't have a smell issue. What I do is run a load of towels with a lot of bleach and also leave the door open a while afterwards.
I also run just bleach through it about once a month. Like I said, I have not had any issue, I hope I am preventing issues by my bleach use. I am a bleach loving person when it comes to cleaning...
GOod luck
If you have pets and put your petbed covers in the machine that can cause a problem. Try looking at www.KleenSheets.com
and never have to wash a petbed cover again.
