My Wont Eat Baby Food

My son is now 10 months old and he refuses to eat baby food. I know they say to keep introducing it to him but the only thing he will eat is Campbell's chunky soup. I drain some of the broth and he eats it with his fingers, but is it healthy for him to eat it all of the time?

What can I do next?

My third wanted nothing at all to do with baby food jars and wanted whatever we were eating. So I'd give her whatever we were eating and just cut it up, mash it up or whatever needed to be done. My second wasn't that keen on baby food jars either, though he ate a bit more than his sister. My first was the only one that really liked eating them, and even then he was picky about which ones he liked.
I always tasted and smelled them before I gave them to my kids. Some of them are insanely nasty! If I wouldn't eat it I wouldn't give it to my kids either.
Before 1 year it's all just practice anyway, the majority of nutrition should come from breastmilk or formula.
Just stop offering baby food and just offer bits of what you are eating.

Have you ever tasted that stuff? Perhaps you could cook some veggies and then cut them to finger size for him.

I made all my kids baby food and they loved it but would not eat the massed produced stuff. Try to make the food with as little salt and sugar as possible. My kids had chicken, beef and liver with their foods. Veggies were cooked with onions and celery with a mix for a soup. Blenders and strainers are great for making food. Look up baby food making on the web.

Good luck to the two of you.

Have you tasted commercially produced baby food? It's vile.
I mashed up whatever I was eating and gave it to my daughter, spices, seasonings and all.

Feed him small bits of your meal. At 10 months he can be eating table food. He probably hates the texture of baby food. Just keep offering him a wide variety of foods and do so many times.

The only issue with him just eating the processed soup is the high sodium content and the presence of MSG.

My second daughter never ate baby food. She wanted what we were having. I just cut food in small pieces and cooked her vegies until they were very soft. She loved chicken, rice, sweet potatoes, avacados and bananas. She too wanted to eat with her fingers. I just let her go at it. Quite messy, but she ate very well. Honestly I cannot think of a food she did not like as long as I did not try to feed her from a spoon like a baby. 10 months old is old enough to eat pretty much any food except nuts and honey. Offer him a wide variety, but don't worry if he eats or not. It is all about practice now, breast milk or formula is primary for the first year.

I would limit canned soup to when you are having something he can't eat because of the high salt content.

Have you tried just feeding him the same food you eat, but cut up into smaller pieces?

The thing about Campbell's soups is that they are loaded with sodium, which isn't a good thing for babies.... it gets them to start wanting processed foods loaded with sodium and sugars.

You can easily make your own foods for him by cooking veggies very well... just cut them up into small finger foods.... tiny bite size pieces.

Babies don't NEED 'baby food' ....... apparently he is handling small chunks just fine.

You can also give him small chunks of ripe banana, canned fruits like peaches and pears cut up into small pieces, small chunks of ripe avocado.... things with a soft texture.

I have a friend whose son ate exactly one jar of baby food. He didn't want it. He wanted the real food. I say skip the premade stuff and feed him what he'll eat. My friend's son gnawed seaweed - whatever was for dinner was on his plate, too, within reason. So give him the soup, but also offer him other finger foods. Small pieces of meat cut up, pasta shapes, cut up fruit and veg. See what he'll eat. By 10 months they can handle a lot of finger foods.

Canned soup is bad for even adults with all the sodium and fat content, feed him what you eat flavored as you eat it, make it finger food size he will be fine and don't expect him to eat everything all the time , my son would go for a day or two sometimes just knickknacking not really eating and the doctor told me he is healthy he will eat when he is hungryn so I quit worrying and he grew up fine and not having the obesity issues so many kids do now days

Welcome to mamapedia!!

We love the Campbell's chunky soup here too. However, that's a LOT of sodium for a baby.

At 10 months? I would chop up simple foods like carrots, potatoes, etc. and steam them myself and give them to him to eat. This way - you KNOW he's eating healthy and not getting a lot of preservatives, sodium, etc.

Add other things to the mix - peas, green beans, etc. ONE AT A TIME and he will start eating them.

Oatmeal is good for kids too!

I would take a cooked hot dog and chop it up small (like the size of the carrots in the soup) and let him try those...and also do the same with a cooked hamburger...add one new item at a time.

Pretty soon, he's going to want to eat off YOUR plate....have fun!!

Baby food is kind of gross. It isn't essential that he eat it, you can give him table food, mashed or in safe chunks.

Home-made soup is a great food for any child who will eat it, but I wouldn't use a commercial soup unless it's low-sodium. The big three food addictions that are hitting kids hard are salt, fats, and sugars. Once they develop cravings for these, it's awfully hard to get them to eat foods that are simpler and more natural.

Breast milk or formula give balanced nutrition for the first year or so. Baby food is a fairly recent invention/convenience, but it's bland and expensive (relative to whole foods prepared from scratch). Before it was available, babies ate what parents ate, cooked soft, or chopped small.

My daughters never ate baby cereal or baby foods althought I tried. They ended up going straight to table food at a year. Nutritionally, all they require at 10 months is breast milk or formula.

My son didn't really take off on solid foods till his first birthday.
I think I'd worry about the salt content in Campbell's soups if he was eating that ALL the time but once in awhile is fine.

You can make your own carrot sticks and then boil them till they are soft.
Baked French fries (less greasy than fried) are easy to munch on too.
You can give him baked sweet potato fries too.

It's messy, but mashed potatoes (or mashed sweet potatoes) or oatmeal or cream of wheat or grits or rice are great for a baby to play with (and some might even get into their mouth) - but you'll want to hose them and the high chair down when they are finished.
Once it's warm enough, try to do this outside on the deck/patio.

I think you should take what you're eating and use a food chopper like Pampered Chef's. I have one that I bought when the kids were little. I put our food under the cup on a cutting board and whacked it 15 times for the little guy and about 8 times for the older kids. It is wonderful to use for spaghetti, no long strings that will flop around and make messes on everything.

At this age his pieces should be 1/4" or smaller so this food chopper is a good investment.

Get the lower sodium type of soup and see if he still likes it. If not then I'd say let him keep eating it. He's learning to like a LOT of different foods while eating it.

Have you ever tasted baby food? No one would eat it if given a choice. We simply pureed/chopped the food we were eating when my son was that age. He learned about real food and flavors. He also felt he was a part of the meal - and was always interested in trying what was on our plates.

Canned soup is loaded with sodium (even the reduced sodium versions have way more salt than you would put in real soup). It is not healthy to eat the same thing all the time.

Baby food is really very tasteless. My first 2 kids liked it, but with baby #3 I ended up just pureeing our dinner to give to him. This kid likes flavor!!

Your son probably likes the Campbell's soup because it has actual flavor, but probably too much sodium. If I were you I would try making your own soups for him. If you'd like, I have a wonderful chicken & lentil soup recipe I could give you that my kids have always devoured.

I would just be worried about the sodium. If he seems to like it get the low sodium kind or make some soup yourself. Baby food may not have enough texture. Watch out for the meat in the soup though. It can be too tough to chew, especially since your son probably doesn't have enough molars to really grind food yet.

If he doesn't want baby food, then give him natural, whole foods that are prepared and cut up for a baby. Please don't give him something so salty and processed as Campbell's anything. Now that he's been eating that, it will be very difficult for him to accept less salty things. It is not healthy.

Well at 10 months breast milk or formula should still be his primary food so you don't need to worry about nutrition.
Baby food is just "practice" and honestly, it's pretty gross. My kids never ate it, they went straight to mashed up table food, at around 12 months.
Just mash up whatever you're cooking, carrots, beans, rice, potatoes, etc. I am sure he'll like that much better.

Canned soups, have a lot of sodium/salt in it.
Too much for a baby's kidneys and body.
Do you know, that many kids... are intaking TOO much salt?
And like adults, it can cause, health problems.

Just TALK to your Pediatrician.
Doesn't your baby go to his well-baby check ups?
He should have had one at 9 months old.

My younger son refused to eat baby food as well despite the fact that I made fresh homemade organic baby food. He had a few teeth so I just let him eat whatever I was eating. I just cut everything up really small so he wouldn't choke. He's four now and there are very few things that he doesn't eat. He even eats spicy Indian food now. It's not healthy to eat the same food all the time so do whatever you can do to get him to eat a variety. As long as you don't give him anything he can choke on, you might be surprised at what he can chew with just a couple of teeth and his gums. Good luck. I hope you find a variety of food that he enjoys.

My son refused to eat baby food, I think I bought a total of 10 -15 jars and we never finished one. He preferred regular food cooked til it was soft enough for him. And he would not touch it if it was mashed. He wanted to eat it in small pieces. A baby barrot was cut in half. I noticed he started chewing right awy so guess it got it at the first try. He also refused to eat obaby cereal I ended up giving away the first box I bought.
